Round Table: "There's No 'I' in Team"

While fans gather in our Grey's Anatomy forum to discuss each character, couple and plot twist, the Insider staff comes together to talk about some of the best moments and share opinions regarding the latest episode of our favorite drama.

Topics for our Round Table for "There's No 'I' in Team" include memorable quotes, Mer-Der, George-Lexie, Callie-Erica, and Izzie-Alex drama ...

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode?

McCritic: When Izzie said to Alex: "I care about you, and I'm not gonna go crazy, and I'm not gonna try to kill myself and I'm not gonna stop caring about you no matter how hard you push me away." I'm sorry. Didn't Izzie already go crazy when she broke up George's marriage to Callie?

missingBurke: Izzie's Good Will Hunting-esque "I care about you, I care about you, I care about you ..." That scene was really powerful and I like them together.

iheartizzie: After his intern referred to him as O'Malley and leaves, I loved George's meek reply (to no one in particular), "He probably should say Doctor O'Malley." Vintage George. As for whether Lexie going off on him was warranted, see next question.

Locker Room Action

2. Is Dr. O'Malley really a jerk or was Lexie out of line?

iheartizzie: George is unbelievably clueless if he can't pick up her signals, and why he didn't explain to her that he didn't ask for any interns is beyond me. But he's no jerk. As a venerable Lexipedia, young Grey should know that you have to be particularly overt with George or he won't take a hint. You can't get mad at O'Malley for being O'Malley.

McCritic: With Meredith maturing, I guess the show needed one Grey sister to enter Irrational Land. Lexie was very much out of line. And would you even wanna be an intern for the man you're in love with? Might lead to seriously - seriously! - awkward situations.

missingBurke: I'm with Lexie. It's one thing to not realize someone has feelings for you, but ignoring the poor girl is quite another. He made her feel invisible.

Grey's Anatomy Moments From Last Night

Below is one of our favorite Grey's Anatomy moments from last night's episode "There's No 'I' in Team," which ABC has conveniently shared this morning on its website.

For weeks, you could feel Alex and Izzie building toward this moment, but it took one tremendous effort on her part last night to get him to let his guard down. Here's the clip ...

"There's No 'I' in Team" From a Writer's Perspective

Grey's Anatomy writer Jenna Bans, who authored last night's episode, has posted her thoughts on "There's No 'I' in Team" on the writers' blog.

Below is an excerpt, with a link to the full version at the bottom.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I love about “The Shepherd Method” (how awesome was that American Neurosurgery magazine – props to the props people!) is that both Meredith and Derek have completely valid arguments. Meredith, as Bailey points out, did work her ass off on that clinical trial.
And it was totally her idea.
However, Derek is the attending and in the medical world, would absolutely get the credit. So it’s a classic professional standoff – complicated by the fact that these two people share a bed. Now if Meredith did the clinical trial with say, Erica Hahn, could we see her getting all riled up?
Think about that. Not a chance, right? (Not like anyone in their right mind would ever pick a fight with Erica Hahn anyway) So it’s not just about the medicine, or about the principle of the thing, it’s also about Mer’s hurt that Derek never said thank you. There are feelings involved.
MerDer Interaction
Big picture point is, when you fall in love and move in with your sort of boss, the personal bleeds on over into the professional, and it gets messy. And happily for us writers who are constantly looking for ways to exploit the Mer-Der drama, there’s no easy way out of that.
As Bailey tells Derek in the end, he’s gonna have to learn to live in the mess.
It’s not simple. But it’s fun to watch. And if anyone can wade through it and make a kidney in a jar look all fun and sexy, it’s these two.
Izzie and Alex, huh? I don’t know about you, but I’ve felt that kiss coming on for weeks. Kind of like a good flu. Iz takes a huge leap of faith tonight – telling Alex, I’m on your team and I’m not going anywhere. That’s a brave lady.
Is There Really an Upcoming Mer-Der Wedding?
Yesterday, we reported that Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey (Derek) hinted getting married to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) in an interview with USA Today. That may be the case, but is a wedding really going down - and how soon?
In an effort to get to the bottom of this, E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos talked to what she calls a reliable source and says the following" "We haven't shot anything related to any kind of engagement or wedding. And I haven't seen anything in a script."
The Beginning or The End?
Of course, the nuptials could very well happen further on down the road, and it certainly seems obvious that Meredith and Derek would end up happily (married) ever after at some point. But if so, that may possibly happen closer to the end of the series.
In the meantime, sources also say that as far as they know, there are no current plans to build a dream house (on Derek's land) set for Meredith and Derek. So again, that may happen sometime in the future (end of the season?), but not right now.
What do you think of a Meredith-Derek wedding on Grey's Anatomy? Is this season too soon, or should they just tie the knot already?
Grey's Anatomy Spoiler: Teaching By Doing
A little Grey's Anatomy spoiler from TV Guide pertaining to this evening:
Q: What have you got for Grey's Anatomy that isn't about Mer and Der?
A: Mmmm, this made it to my desk just before deadline, and goodness, it's tasty. What you may know from the sneak previews: This week, Mark Sloan counsels the "Mason-Dixon line"-averse Callie on the ways of love. What you don't know: He teaches by doing. What does that mean?!
Chyler Leigh Discusses Lexie, George, Meredith, Etc.
Actress Chyler Leigh may not be sure whether Lexie and George will ever be on the same page romantically on Grey's Anatomy, but there's one thing she knows for certain: Meredith's sister setting her sights on Derek Shepherd would have been a disaster.
In a Q&A with TV Guide, Chyler Leigh gives Grey's Anatomy fans the rundown on Lexie's love life, the tease of being Ellen Pompeo's "sister" and much more.
TVG: Let's start off talking about this week's episode, where "Lexie goes to great lengths to have George notice her romantically," says ABC. What's involved?
Chyler Leigh: Lexie Grey is just kind of throwing herself out there – obviously, in her mind, but he's just not getting it.
TVG: No, he's not.
Chyler Leigh: He's completely oblivious. [Laughs] Even little comments that she is making repeatedly....
TVG: Like, "Let's go out and celebrate you passing the exam!"
Lexie and George
Chyler Leigh: "Let's go out and celebrate," and then she's left in the dust. Even so, she didn't really take that too close to heart. She just keeps throwing herself under the bus.
TVG: Do any of her tactics involve whipping out the Stuff Magazine cover you did a few years back with Mia Kirshner?
Chyler Leigh: Oh, lord....
TVG: Because that would raise George's eyebrows.
Chyler Leigh: Yes, but that wouldn't have been Lexie. [Laughs] And unfortunately it was me, many, many moons ago.
Grey's Anatomy Spoilers, Guest Star News
A couple of minor Grey's Anatomy spoilers in EW's Q & A session today ...
Q: Any good Grey's Anatomy scoop?
A: Yup, and you're gonna want a hanky when it comes to pass, I have a hunch. The show is casting an 8-10-year-old male patient who wants to live but is realistic about his prospects of doing so. In other words, he's only gonna last three episodes.
Q: ... Tell me when Cristina Yang's amazingly awesome army doctor (Owen Hunt) is coming back to Grey's Anatomy!
A: Kevin McKidd returns briefly this Thursday, and then in full force next week. Speaking of air dates, please note that Melissa George's bisexual intern debuts on November 13, not November 6 as I stated last week. In my defense, bisexuality confuses me.
