Writers are Insensitive to Children with Cleft Palates
-
I came into this thread a bit late: BUT let me say Itsmiles910 YOU ROCK! It's about being respectful to the families of children afflicted with a cleft lip /palate. I have both and oddly enough most people don't even see it (no they aren't lying to make me feel better)! My mother however is left with deep deep scars from the comments of others! If she would have been watching this episode when I was young I can not begin to image the damage it would have done to her self esteem. The comment may have been off the cuff to some, but it was wrong in all sense of purpose! "A sucker for them." Interesting word choice a child with a cleft does not have the ability to suck until after the cleft is repaired and then is still limited.
If Sloans character needs so much attention bring the story line back around and show his repairing a cleft.
I only hope the ambassadors for www.smiletrain.com get a whiff of this story line~sure did win Smile Pinkie an Oscar!

Thanks sandyfayek for speaking on behalf of people with clefts. I started this post because I was outraged with the comment that the writers had Sloan making since my daughter was born with both a cleft lif and palate. I too think it would be awesome if they DID show Sloan repairing a cleft. We donate frequently to The Smile Train and Smil Pinky is a wonderful film that can help educate the many people out there that are ignorant and oblivious to this issue. Than YOU.
