You are exactly right McSmarty! GA does reach a MUCH larger fan base than any of the other shows I listed, and they're making the Callica story a central story line, not something silly on the periphery of the show. The writers, in one episode, have blown the amazing opportunity they had to portray a realistic lesbian relationship.
When I first heard the rumblings of a lesbian couple, I figured GA, like other shows, was only throwing in a "freak show" for ratings.
When they first started the relationship, I couldn't have been happier. The fast, close friendship, the casual flirty-ness and then slowly the realization that something is different. The being scared, the questioning. The trying to be "normal." It was all portrayed so well and spoke so truly to lesbians remembering the moment they realized and their first crush. Okay, maybe not everyone tried to be "normal," but I did, and I don't think its unbelievable for Callie to start sleeping with Mark every chance she gets to try and convince herself that she likes men. And when they kissed finally at the end of last season, I got butterflies in my stomach for them!
This season started and the writers still did a great job. The nervousness and being afraid of messing up. I love that Callie was being flighty and Erica was just very calm and reassuring to her. Its almost like they're writing Erica as a long-time lesbian as opposed to a first-time lesbian (for lack of better words to describe this). They communicated, they took it slow, the really developed the characters and the relationship. I mean, Callie even came out to Bailey! Last week ended with me telling my friends that Callie and Erica were the only couple that had a normal, healty relationship on the show.
Then that disaster of an episode last week! UGH! I don't care about stereotypes - they exist for a reason - to be honest this doesn't even remind me of one of the countless lesbian stereotypes (maybe a bisexual stereotype?) I'm beyond disgusted - and you're right, how in the world could GLAAD have approved this?! I mean, not only does it scream that a woman can't please another woman without help from a man, but its just STUPID! If Callie was still in her scared, trying not to be gay/bi phase - her behavior wouldn't upset me. But she's not!!
Great job GA writers! You choked on the national stage! You failed at writing a meaningful lesbian relationship and instead you might as well be writing about one of your in-passing, patient storylines thats more for shock value.
