anuflas - thanks for the comment! Don't worry, you aren't the only one. I like Alex too, so I am apparently shallow and I like to be abused by men.
I can fully admit that Alex can be a HUGE jerk and there are many times that his behavior frustrates me. (I think that the word abusive is a pretty strong word and if it applies to Alex it applies to just about every character on the show). But as a character he is written well enough (and acted wonderfully) so that even when I don't like what he does, I can understand it. For god sake its a tv show...in real life I would run far from just about every single messed up guy on this show. But as far as entertainment goes, I find Alex to be extremely interesting and entertaining.
I don't love Izzie, but I like what she brings out in Alex and especially I like what he brings out in her. Although I was a big fan of the Gizzie friendship, I found that both Denny and George brought out a side of Izzie that I really didn't like (ie - hysterical and selfish). Since they are fictional characters, I find it hard to argue who is better for Izzie or who loves her more since they are products of a writers imagination. I just think that her behavior with Alex is alot more likable and entertaining to me than it was when she was with George or Denny.
I am a fan of George too, but all of the insistence of him being so nice and sweet and practically without flaws and of the Gizzie love being PURE is just not what I saw on my screen. But hey, to each his own.
As always, I feel the need to defend Alex a little bit LOL! When he pushed Izzie into to say goodbye to George and then left the room, I could have sworn that he was wiping away a tear. Did anyone else see it?
As far as what he said to Izzie outside of the trailer, yes it was pretty rotten and there really was no reason for him to be that mean about it. However, Izzie basically asked him to have sex with her so that she could be distracted from feeling sad about George, her bff but also her ex-lover. Since she couldn't drink or work. Thats pretty harsh too. Plus, she must have known how difficult her cancer and hallucinations have been on Alex (as well as her) and she told him that she was WISHING for another tumor so that she could talk to George. C'mon. Although I think that part of that scene was Izzie saying something like that to really get Alex's attention. And she sure did.
Yes, Alex was a jerk in that scene, but Izzie could have been a LOT more sensitive as well. She has a habit of being completely unaware of Alex's feelings, and thats what I saw here. She was dealing with the death of her best friend, but Alex was dealing with his wife dying in his arms and that didn't seem to occur to her. Again, not to say that Alex should have been that mean, but still. I am glad though, that they finally communicated about his feelings at the end.
As long as it is done realistically and without unnecessary couple angst, I have no problem with a few Meredith and Izzie-less episodes. In fact, this presents a wonderful opportunity to explore some of those characters that we still don't know that much about after 5 years (Derek, Alex, Mark). I would love to see Mark and Derek FINALLY get to their issues. More scenes between Alex and Cristina, Bailey and Derek, Callie and Cristina, Owen and Alex, etc.
If they do use this time to focus on relationships outside of the normal couples and give us some backstory on characters that need it (what is Alex's relationship w/his mother like now?, Are Mark's parents still alive?), I will be THRILLED. But I fear that once again, Alex and Derek will be the supporting player to someone else's story and this time it will be some new person that I couldn't begin to care about.
Speaking as someone who is a Meredith fan, but not a big Mer/Der fan, I'm glad that they said "a focus" and not "THE focus." In one of the promos/recap shorts on the ABC page, the narrator says something about the show being the story of the five interns and that is always what I have believed the show is about and the main reason why I enjoy it.
I agree that Meredith is the lead and Derek is her love interest, but if it were to focus solely on them as a couple I just wouldn't enjoy the show as much. I know that there have been a lot of complaints about this past season being "Izzie's Anatomy" but I think that Izzie's story gave a LOT of characters some of their best moments of the season: Alex, Derek (with and without Mer), Cristina, Bailey, Lexie and even George's best (and practically only) scenes were part of the Izzie/cancer story. It brought the Fab 5 back together in a way that they hadn't been before.
Usually when the focus is on Mer/Der it is only on Mer/Der and their issues and back and forth, etc. and doesn't involve other characters. And since that part isn't enjoyable to me, I actually like it when other characters and couples get a lot of screentime, even Meredith dealing with Cristina or the Chief. This past season is the first time that I have liked Mer/Der at all and I think it is because they are in a good place and their drama wasn't contrived and taking up the entire show JMO. Plus they both got stuff to do outside of their relationship.
I agree that it is PD. I just don't think that KH is interested in directing at this time. She is still young and very bankable as a leading actress in movies. If she wanted to direct I would imagine that it would be when she got older and her movie career was dying down. PD has said that he appreciates his job because it allows him to do other things such as racing. Plus he has had some problems with the way Derek has been written in the past. So I definitely think that it is him.
Great post, Ace! I am very sad to see TR go and I believe that the show will be losing a great character in George. But everything that we have heard (Shonda hates TR, TR walked off set, Shonda is bff with IW) is all rumor and conjecture and we may never know exactly what happened. What matters is that Shonda and TR seem to be fine (maybe not happy) but fine with the decisions and are trying to move on.
I'm sorry for those of you who only watched for George and I can understand the frustration felt because of the crappy way that George has been treated this season. It angered me as well, especially the way that he was ignored for most of the season and then literally thrown under a bus all the while being insulted by his "friends." I didn't like that at all.
But I don't get all the hate for Izzie and Izzie and Alex and the other characters. If you hate every other character other than George (and it sounds like some of you do) then you will now be free to pursue other shows or activities on Thursdays. But the rest of us will continue to enjoy the show and the other characters, so please stop with all of the hate just because you are disappointed that the only character you liked is gone. It makes me wonder why you watched the show in the first place if everyone else was so disgusting,attention-hogging and only the stuff of frustrated housewife's wetdreams. If people have that much of a low opinion of the show and the other characters, maybe you should be glad that you can be done with it. It sounds like watching the show was torture for some of you.
Sorry - one more thing. I agree that many characters have committed adultery and one instance isn't better or worse than another. I think that the difference with Gizzie is that the hurt party was a character that viewers knew. We didn't know Addison when Mer/Der started, Addison/Mark happened offscreen before we knew either of them, and we only saw Ava's husband one time. Not excusing all of that, but I do think that is why so many people had a hard time with it.
Kim - I think that I could go through your post line by line and feel the exact opposite LOL! But thats OK, it just means that the show has something for everyone. There is no right or wrong interpretation, it is just how we see things and what characters we prefer. (Although I do like George and love his friendship with Izzie).
I can agree on a couple of things: For whatever reason, those characters who are portrayed as the "good" characters (Derek, Izzie, George) don't seem to get as much leeway as the "bad" characters (Alex, Meredith, Cristina) when they mess up. In some instances it is because they have been set up so high (McDreamy) and in some cases its because they don't always take responsibility for their mistakes.
I can also agree that Mer/Alex would probably make a more interesting couple than Mer/Derek (and possibly even Alex/Izzie), but we will never see it.
I guess I am just drawn more to the darker characters for whatever reason. (This is the first season that I have ever found Derek even remotely interesting, for example). Even when I find Alex to be at his most frustrating and when I don't like his behavior (like at the beginning of this season), I can sort of understand it. I can't excuse it, but I understand it.
As far as Shonda and the "haters", I think that Shonda just does pretty much what she wants to do unless the network tells her otherwise. The Denny storyline this season was probably THE most hated storyline in the show's history and yet there he was again in the 100th episode and the finale and I won't be at all surprised to see him in the season premiere. I think that she loves all of the extreme reaction. She even said that even when viewers hate something it shows they care. What she doesn't want is indifference and with this past cliffhanger, that is exactly what I feel.
Boy it is nice to discuss this stuff without name calling and all that stuff!
We will have to all agree to disagree, I guess. Personally, I always thought that Izzie sort of emasculated George and never took him seriously as a man, and that George thought Izzie was hot, but never thought about her the way he did about Meredith, for example. I do believe that Izzie loves George and vice-versa and that in many ways George does know her better than Alex, but I just never saw a real romantic/passionate connection between them. I did see Izzie look at Alex with real love this season. Unfortunately between the hallucination/ghostsex/masturbation sessions and then the cancer, Izzie had quite a bit on her mind.
When they got together, I think that they were each looking for something (or to get out of something) and thought that because they had that friend connection that it would be absolutely great (and simple) if they could find that in each other. But in the end, they couldn't because they were just meant to be friends and I felt that they were trying to force something that just wasn't there. Also by safe choice, I meant that Izzie saw George as someone that wouldn't hurt her the way that Alex did. (Of course, he did hurt Callie that way).
Lord only knows what is in Shonda's brain, but I do think that if she really meant for George and Izzie to end up together, then she wouldn't have had them start out they way they did. She had to know that many fans weren't going to love George and Izzie hurting Callie. Callie wasn't like Ava's husband or another character getting cheated on, she was a semi-regular character. And even if the George/Callie marriage wasn't the best idea (which I also believe) Callie didn't deserve what she got. So I don't necessarily think that Alex/Izzie fans swayed her one way or the other. Personally, I was so over Izzie at that point that the last person I wanted her with was Alex.
My problem with Izzie when she was with George and with Denny was that she acted completely selfishly and a was a little bit psycho and both relationships really made me dislike her. She isn't like that with Alex since they have gotten back together. She just seems happy with him and relaxed (minus the cancer of course). I know that Gizzie fans think that this means she doesn't love Alex as much, but to me her "love" for Denny and George just wasn't healthy. I think that it says a lot about Izzie that she got so overwrought for a guy who was dying and a guy who was married. She wanted what she couldn't have in her search for the safe and perfect love. Which unfortunately, doesn't exist. JMO.
Laura - I can understand why you thought what Alex said was gross (although it was perfectly Alex), but why did you think it was selfish?
He knew that Izzie wanted to harvest her eggs and he did what he could to help in that situation without hesitation because he knew that it was what she wanted.
As far as getting Izzie's permission to fertilize the eggs, I can tell you from personal experience that there is NO WAY that Alex would have been approached about this by anyone if she hand't given her consent. Granted, they should have shown this on screen and they should have talked about it beforehand, but it is 100% illegal for any medical caregiver to even approach someone about this procedure, much less create fertilized embryos, without the woman's written consent, and she would have to sign off on the sperm before it was used.
When the Chief said that Alex should talk to Izzie it was because they were essentially making babies that day and it is something that they should discuss. But I thought it showed a huge commitment from Alex that he was willing to do it. JMO.
Just think what it will do to my poor Alex! And yes I'm an Alex fan. Something about a man who tells it like it is, but saves tiny little babies...and jizzes in a cup for his dying-future-wife...so hott.
Ha ha! I couldn't have said it better myself! I especially loved that his first words to Izzie either before or after her surgery were about his "contribution." Ah that Karev is such a romantic in his own way!
I swear all of this drama just makes me sick of the show. I don't want T.R. to be unhappy in his workplace, but I don't want him to leave either. If he does want to leave, I hope that they find another way to do it other than him dying. There are so many other ways to do it, and it would leave the door open for a possible return.
Not to mention, if any of the Fab 5 dies, it is just a lose/lose situation. Either everyone is in mourning for half of the season and it is depressing or they just get back to normal as though that person never existed. Neither of those options make me want to return in the Fall.
Just to defend Alex for a second, he never said that he wanted to smother Izzie with a pillow or give her an overdose of morphine. In fact, he said (with his usual sarcasm) that he wasn't real psyched to do either of those things or leave her. He was just expressing his frustration with the situation. Izzie made him promise that she wouldn't live on a ventilator. She didn't, but she wasn't herself either, so he was doing what he thought that he had to do to get her memory back so that she was herself again, both for her and for himself. He was sort of stuck in a limbo and since they got married at the spur of the moment without thinking all these things through, he is now legally and morally responsible for her for the rest of her life no matter what her mental state is. Yes, he could have been a LOT nicer about what he said, but I understand where he was coming from and in the end, so did Izzie.
If anyone thinks that Alex would actually kill Izzie, or even want to kill Izzie, then they haven't been watching closely. I understand why people wouldn't like Alex or why they wouldn't like A/I together, but his love for her is pretty obvious.
Alex is my favorite character. I didn't like George and Izzie together romantically, but not because I wanted her with Alex (I wanted Alex with Addison back then). Anyway, I have complained all season long about the lack of George on this board and many others. I hated the finale, and I hated how George was ignored all season and then literally threw him in front of a bus. Just because someone likes Alex doesn't mean that they don't like George.
I don't understand why any character has to die? If an actor wants to leave (or if tptb want them to leave) just write them out in a different way. George could still go back to the army or go recuperate at at a different hospital or maybe recover and go back into the army. Izzie could stop working at SGH, go search for alternative treatments, etc.
As a George and an Izzie fan, I don't want either of them to leave, but if one or more of them die, it is going to affect the WHOLE show. So even people who hate the characters are going to be unhappy. At least on person in every couple will be in mourning. Mer/Der - grieving. Cris/Owen - grieving. Callie - grieving. Lexie - grieving. Bailey - grieving. Alex - I don't even want to think about it.
So anyone who is a fan of the ensemble or of a particular couple is going to have to watch a least a few depressing episodes of their favorite characters miserable. Who wants to watch that???
I know that the Izzie storyline has been front and center recently, but I think that the majority of characters have gotten great material from it. Alex has been great, we have gotten great and insightful scenes from Izzie/Cristina, Alex/Mer, Bailey/Izzie, Bailey/Derek, Alex/George and Izzie/Mer/Derek. So while the story may be "about" Izzie, it is certainly bringing personal issues that may have nothing to do with Izzie for many, many characters. That usually doesn't happen with normal romantic couple storylines.
I don't think George is going to die, even if he leaves the show. I just can't imagine Shonda killing a main character. Plus, because George has been ignored all season, killing him off won't have the emotional impact that it should. I don't want him to leave at all, but if he does, I hope it is sometime next season so that he gets a send-off that he deserves and not something squeezed in among all the other stories.
Although I liked her scenes, I'm not sure that Bailey is cut out for Peds. She is getting way, way too attached to these patients. She needs to give herself the speech that she gave Izzie about getting personally involved with patients.
God, I am dreading Denny coming back. It really, really lessens my excitement and my interest in the rest of the episodes which I was really looking forward to. Seriously, I used to like Denny and the sight of him just makes me cringe now. JMO.
!greys - I am an Alex and Izzie fan and I agree it is too early for them to get married. As excited as I was when I saw the photos for that episode, I'm just afraid that them getting married isn't going to turn out well for them.
Also, I wish that we got a little bit more of Izzie's feelings for Alex this season. It seems like Izzie had very low expectations for him at the beginning, but he surprises every time. For example, she doubts he can be faithful and he is the one who wants to be exclusive. She doubts he will stick by her when she is a mess and he refuses to break up with her and she thinks he isn't ready to make any kind of commitment and he wants her to meet his mom. So we have seen more of Alex's feelings, I think that Izzie is getting there.
I hated the Denny storyline more than I have hated anything on this show, and part of it is because it has completely taken away from Alex and Izzie, which I guess is the point.
