New Grey's Anatomy Music Video to Feature Mat Kearney Song

Mat KearneyMat Kearney is singing for Grey's Anatomy.

Kearney and his song, "Breathe In Breathe Out," will be featured in the hit ABC show's annual music video, which will premiere on the network September 20 during a clip show bringing viewers up-to-date on all the comings-and-goings of the surgical interns of Seattle Grace.

"We feel like this track is the perfect Grey's Anatomy song - so emotional, hopeful and a beautiful piece of writing - perfect for a Grey's Anatomy video," Betsy Beers, one of the show's executive producers, tells the New York Post.

Previously, ABC has made Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," The Fray's "How to Save a Life" and Brandi Carlile's "The Story" into videos, all of which intersperse scenes of the artists with clips from the show.

"Chasing Cars" and "How to Save a Life" both went on to become big hits, with "Chasing Cars" becoming iTunes' biggest download last fall, and "How to Save a Life" hitting number three on Billboard's Hot 100.

Matt Kearney is no stranger to Grey's Anatomy.

He's already had three songs - "All I Need," "Crashing Down" and "Where We Gonna Go From Here" from his album Nothing Left to Lose - appear on the soundtrack of the hit medical drama.

His song "Undeniable" was used to promote NBC's Friday Night Lights and TNT used the Nothing Left to Lose title track for its own ad campaign.

Mat Kearney integrates a simple, singer-songwriter sound with easy spoken-word raps that give him an accessible, different, catchy style.

Besides working with TV shows, Mat Kearney has opened for John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and The Fray. Nothing Left to Lose made it on to Billboard's Top 100 list, and went to number two on its Alternative New Artist chart.

Along with Mat Kearney's video, Grey's is releasing its Season 3 soundtrack next month, the follow-up to the successful Season 1 and Season 2 Grey's CDs.

Volumes one and two of the Grey's Anatomy soundtracks sold over 300,000 copies each, making them the top-selling TV show soundtracks of the past four years - not counting American Idol compilations.

In fact, a boxed set of all three CDs also will be released at the same time as the Grey's Anatomy Season 3 record.

Season three includes "Breathe In Breathe Out," and Carlile's "The Story" as well as John Legend's "Sun Comes Up," Paolo Nutini's "Million Faces" and "Moon and Sun" by Gomez, one of the show's favorite artists.

Fans who download the soundtrack on iTunes will also get two bonus tracks: Patrick Watson's "The Great Escape" and Black Cat John Brown's "Alamo Race Track."

"It is difficult to narrow down the selection of songs to a manageable number - it was really hard this year," says Beers.

"You have to still love the song after it is placed, and you have heard it over and over again in the editing room. Despite the seemingly endless, repeated listenings, all the songs we chose we still love to play in the car going home."

Josh Kelley's Music Video For "Only You" (Featuring Katherine Heigl)

Thanks to Kristen for sending along this addition to our new video section - it's a rather significant one, as videos go, and we can't believe we didn't have it in our collection of Grey's Anatomy videos before!

As many Grey's Anatomy and Katherine Heigl fans know, she met her fiance, Josh Kelley, on the set of the singer / songwriter's music video for "Only You." Here's Josh's video, featuring the attractive blonde who would go on to wear his engagement ring very soon after!

Cool song - and amazing that Katherine and Josh met on the set of this video and are now engaged! Snow Patrol Guitarist Nathan Connolly Talks Touring, Writing, Grey's Anatomy

You all know their smash hit song, "Chasing Cars," as one of the most well-known tracks in the world of Grey's Anatomy music since it was played in the Season 2 finale last May.

Now, Snow Patrol guitarist Nathan Connolly recently spoke to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel about touring, the creative process and how he's learned to love Grey's Anatomy. Here's part of his interview:

    Q. Have you gotten your sea legs yet?

    A. (laughs) Yeah, we're adjusting just fine, thanks. Right now, we're sitting around in Denver. There's a bit of snow on the ground. We're just kind of like, let's get on with it. There's a gig almost every night, which is the fun part. That's what you go on tour for. It's not as nice when you have travel days. So we're excited to be back. We've grown a little bit since the last time.

    Snow Patrol

    Q. Did the success of "Final Straw" make "Eyes Open" a more difficult undertaking?

    A. With any record, there's always challenges. Despair is too harsh a word, but moments of self-doubt and consternation - that's just part of making an album. But with this album, it was actually absolutely a pleasure and joy to make. We worked very, very hard on it. And there's a discipline on this record that we never had. "Chasing Cars" is one of the simpler songs and probably the trickiest to get the build of it right. We kept coming back to that one. It doesn't sound like it when you actually listen to it, though.

    Q. Was any of it written on the road while touring "Straw?"

    A. No, not really. We're kind of individual, with everyone writing bits and pieces of songs and sticking them on a computer... And America's so big, we spend a lot of time traveling. It's hard to break the instruments out on the tour bus.

    Q. American TV has treated Snow Patrol well. Do you ever second-guess kicking a song to a TV show?

    A. There's no argument that it opens doors to a bigger demographic for your music to reach. It's amazing; the night "Chasing Cars" was on Grey's Anatomy (during the episode "Losing My Religion") it went to No. 1 on iTunes. As long as they pay us, it's great. I guess the one thing we were concerned about was that people wouldn't recognize the song outside the TV program. We've got a record with 10 other good songs on it. We want people to buy the record as much as the song. So as long as that happens, we're fine with it.

    Q. Do you think the album is an endangered species?

    A. I don't think so yet. So many bands have made great records that are new at the moment. But lots of people are happy making songs. I always buy the record. Even if I just like a song, I buy the record anyway. But it's important for us to make a whole body of work. I don't think we're alone; bands like The Shins and plenty of others make amazing albums.

    The Anatomy of Hit Music

At a cozy downtown hair salon in New York City, a stylist was buzzing about Teddybears and Peter Bjorn & John, two bands he heard the previous night. But he didn't get tuned in to the tracks at a hip club or on the radio - it was on ABC's hit medical drama, Grey's Anatomy.

Alexandra PatsavasAccording to an article in today's New York Post, that's all thanks to Alexandra Patsavas (right), a 38-year-old independent music supervisor and the sonic treasure hunter behind Grey's Anatomy, as well as other shows.

Because of the popularity of these programs, and the high priority they put on good music, getting Patsavas' ear is as important as scoring a spot on MTV or a Top 40 radio station.

One beneficiary was the group Snow Patrol, which was featured in Grey's Anatomy's emotional season finale, "Losing My Religion."

The song plays as Izzy lies on the bed of her dead fiancé, Denny Duquette. Patsavas chose Snow Patrol's acoustic version of "Chasing Cars" as an emotional counter note, and the band received a huge national boost.

Another beneficiary has been The Fray, whose track "How to Save a Life" was featured on Grey's Anatomy and is now a smash hit.

To find the right tune, Patsavas pores over 400 CDs a week.

"I just get through it. Really bad music reveals itself quickly. And the good stuff - when you hear it, you know it," she said.

She compiles the best tracks for the producers to hear in "the cutting room or the car."

Sometimes the Grey's Anatomy music is already in the script. Other times, she'll pitch a song after reading the script or after the show's been shot and edited.
