Melissa George: My Days Are Numbered

Melissa George, who plays wild, dangerous and, it would appear, curious intern Sadie on Grey’s Anatomy, says co-star T.R. Knight has been doing “beautiful work” and seems “happy” on set - despite his recent request to be written off the hit show.

“He was at work yesterday in the best mood I’ve ever seen him,” she said when interviewed by People. “We were in a scene all day together.”

Still, she gets why Knight, who’s character Dr. George O’Malley has had little screen time this season, would ask to leave the ensemble Grey’s Anatomy cast.

“He’s a great actor,” she says. “But maybe, when you have talent, you want more.”

Sadie Up Close

Speaking of talent, while Grey's Anatomy was snubbed, Melissa George picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her work on HBO’s In Treatment on Thursday.

“I’m having the time of my life,” the 32-year-old Australian actress says. “It’s my first big nomination in this country. I just can’t believe it.”

As for Mer's old friend Sadie, who’s had some shocking scenes (cutting herself so the other interns can practice sewing her up, hitting on Sara Ramirez’s Callie Torres over slides of broken bones), George says her days at Seattle Grace are numbered.

“I think I’m going to do 8 [episodes] and that’s it,” she says. “We’ll see.”

Ben Shenkman to Guest Star on Grey's Anatomy

New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming story arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy: She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman.

Sources confirm to Entertainment Weeekly that the Tony Award and Golden Globe Award-nominated actor has been cast as the husband of Westfeldt's character.

But here's an interesting twist to the whole saga: He's not going to be just dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's Anatomy insider, he's a patient, too - and a critical one at that.

Like Jennifer Westfeldt, Ben Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes.

Eric Stoltz to Guest Star on Grey's Anatomy

Looks like Izzie Stevens won't be the only crazy person roaming the halls of Seattle Grace come January: actor Eric Stoltz has recently been cast as a serial killer in need of immediate medical attention at Seattle Grace. Sounds intense even by SGH standards!

The future star of Sci-Fi's Caprica, who certainly proved he can play a believable sociopath in Pulp Fiction and Killing Zoe, will appear in three episodes of Grey' Anatomy.

Eric Stoltz' story line, which takes a surprising turn around the second of his three episodes, will raise a number of thorny ethical questions for McDreamy and company.

He didn't have to travel far for his audition: Stoltz has directed several Grey's Anatomy episodes this year, most recently "These Ties That Bind" on November 13.

Jennifer Westfeldt to Guest Star on Grey's Anatomy

One of Seattle Grace's finest may soon be kissing Jessica Stein.

Or something. According to Entertainment Weekly, actress Jennifer Westfeldt (of Kissing Jessica Stein and Notes from the Underbelly fame) is coming on board Grey's Anatomy.

She'll be featured in a multi-episode story arc later in Season Five.

Fortunately, having just added the amazing Melissa George as intern Sadie, the show isn't adding yet another doctor to its already crowded rotation of surgeons and their subordinates. Jennifer Westfeldt is only coming to Seattle Grace as a patient, according to reports.

Jennifer Westfeldt

If history is any indication, she might fall in love with one of her docs. Then she may die, but why let that slow her down? She can always come back as a ghost later on.

Okay, just kidding. We have no idea if that's true at all, it was just a bad attempt at humor on our part. Either way, we're looking forward to seeing Jennifer on the show.

Minor Grey's Anatomy Character Bites the Dust

In today's edition of "Guess who's leaving Grey's Anatomy now," Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly reports that Janina Gavankar has departed the show.

Did you even know she was on it?

The L Word alum, who joined the Grey's Anatomy cast in September as one of several new Seattle Grace interns, has left the show after just two episodes.

Per one insider, the role turned out to be smaller than Gavankar had hoped. Without a guarantee that her part would grow, the actress chose to move on.

In more significant cast news, rumors - just rumors, we emphasize - continue to circulate about Sara Ramirez and whether Callie's days at Seattle Grace are numbered.

Jessica Capshaw to Guest Star on Grey's Anatomy

The list of Grey's Anatomy guest stars keeps on growing.

On the heels of the arrival of a new head of trauma, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) comes word that another fresh face will soon be scrubbing in at Seattle Grace.

Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who’s called in to consult on a case and ends up butting heads with Dr. Bailey.

According to the L.A. Times, Capshaw is signed for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more. She will make her first appearance midway through Season 5.

Jessica Capshaw

Jessica Capshaw is the latest to sign on for a high-profile Grey’s Anatomy guest stint.

Both Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Gallactica) and Melissa George (Alias) begin their runs in the November 13 episode, called "These Ties That Bind."

They will play a cardiac surgeon with Asperger’s syndrome and a bisexual intern who shares a past with one of our favorite characters, respectively.

Combine that with McKidd and another cameo by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (the late Denny Duquette of Season Two fame) and we've got quite the guest roster this fall.

Kevin McKidd Discusses Dr. Owen Hunt, Grey's Anatomy

There's a new badass at Seattle Grace, and his name is Major Owen Hunt. You may have noticed. Kevin McKidd's Army surgeon character returned Thursday, and certainly shook things up.

So how long is he staying and what is in the works for Owen and Cristina? E! Online visited the set to get the word on that from Kevin McKidd himself....

According to McKidd (and as we saw in "Life During Wartime"), the arrival of Major Hunt is a shock to Seattle Grace's system, since after years of doing battlefield medicine, he doesn't play by the rules of a cosmopolitan teaching hospital like theirs.

"These Army trauma surgeons... Their methods in the field are improvised and not by the book," McKidd said of his brilliant but rough-around-the-edges character. "Hunt deals with stuff on the hoof and uses stuff he has around him to fix stuff."

Life During Wartime

As we saw in the Season Five premiere, Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Hunt may have somethin' brewing. According to McKidd:

"There's something ... a little flame growing there between him and Cristina. I don't think it's going to be a simple journey for those two, but there's something definitely going on. We don't know if it's going to be a smooth road or a rocky one."

What kind of challenges will Cristina and Hunt face if they take each other on? McKidd said: "The thing that's interesting is that she's damaged in that way because of her past experience. He's not the most together guy because he's just been in a war zone for the last three years of his life. So I think maybe there'll be some healing going on between the two of them."

Will McKidd be part of the Grey's Anatomy cast, long-term? According to the man himself:

"It's exciting to be thrown into such an established group and strong characters, strong-minded characters. And this guy Owen Hunt is very strong-minded and very dedicated to what he's doing and the job. He's pretty damaged, so he wants to keep a distance from people I think. It's going to be interesting to see what that adds to the chemistry of the show."

Mary McDonnell Speaks on Grey's Anatomy Role

If you suspected there was a twist surrounding Mary McDonnell's upcoming three-episode Grey's Anatomy story arc, congratulations, you were right.

So says Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly.

Turns out her character, a celebrated cardiac surgeon brought in to boost Seattle Grace's reputation beginning November 13, has Asperger's syndrome.

"Shonda Rhimes thought it would be interesting to have an incredibly skilled surgeon who, socially, is initially misunderstood," explains executive producer Betsy Beers of the autism-related disorder, which is characterized by eccentric behavior and a general social awkwardness.

What's Mary McDonnell's take on it? Let's find out in the Q&A below ...

Mary McDonnell on Grey

EW: How does everyone react to your character, Dr. Virginia Dixon?

Mary McDonnell: In her first surgery she works primarily with Bailey and Karev, who are both sort of caught off guard by her difficulty in communication. They don't really know until the end of the episode that she has Asperger's. It's challenging for them. On the one hand, you're introducing a dramatic and comedic dynamic that people have to react to. On the other hand, you're bringing on a very dignified real human being with a disability that can be problematic for everyone.

EW: What's it like playing her?

Mary McDonnell: It's been a wonderful experience. Grey's has to do with social nuance and behavior between people, and this is a character who can't really relate to any of that. She comes in and brings a little bit of a different behavior to Seattle Grace.

Melissa George Discusses Grey's Anatomy Character, Sadie

Circle November 13 on your calendar as the day Alias' Melissa George debuts as Grey's Anatomy's newest intern, Sadie. The big question on many fans' minds, of course, remains whether Sadie's reported bisexuality and Meredith Grey have intersected.

TV sleuth Michael Ausiello attempts to get to the bottom of that in an interview with Melissa George, published today on Entertainment Weekly ...

Q: Tell me about Sadie.

Melissa George: I'm dying to find out more about her because her behavior is so interesting. She's a girl that walks on the wild side. She's very close with Meredith; they were best friends. They traveled around the world together. And when Meredith went to work at Seattle Grace, Sadie went to work at a morgue. I'm dying to know why she behaves so recklessly. Anyone who behaves like that has to have a lot of issues.

Q: For the record, is she bisexual or a lesbian?

Melissa George: She just takes anything - whatever walks in front of her. [Laughs] If it's a male, she'll go for it. If it's a female, she'll go for it. She doesn't think attraction should be [limited] by gender. I sort of look at people and go, "Wow, how do you live like that?" But she seems to get a thrill out of shocking people.

Sadie and Meredith

Q: Obvious question: Did Meredith Grey and Sadie "experiment" back in the day?

Melissa George: We don't know. But that's what's so intriguing: What happened between these two? It's brought up a lot [on the show], but we've never revealed what happened.

Q: But something happened.

Melissa George: I think so. There's a lot of [Mer-Sadie] dialogue like "Don't tell them what happened!" So, something did happen, but I'm not sure what. They obviously traveled together and were very close. Did they date? Did they not? Did something major happen to them that they swore they'd never discuss? It could be anything.

Melissa George to Play Spoiler For Callie-Erica?

The relationship between Callie and Erica took a back seat for much of this week's premiere, but the exchange at the end hinted at good things to come.

That is, unless a certain ex-Alias vixen has something to say about it.

Melissa George is in final negotiations to join the Grey's Anatomy cast as an intern with, an, um open mind. Or so Entertainment Weekly reports.

Melissa George

Michael Ausiello indicates that she's being groomed as a love interest for either Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) or Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith).

Rumor has it that Shonda Rhimes was so enamored with Melissa George that she tweaked her initial plans for the role - which reportedly involved her being a patient in just one episode.

It will be interesting to see if this has long-term potential.

The probable hiring caps a busy couple of weeks for Grey's Anatomy casting department - The L Word's Janina Gavankar and newcomer Brandon Scott will both be new interns and Battlestar Galactica's inimitable Mary McDonnell is on board, too.
