Grey Chatter: The Tangled, Complicated Webs We Weave

Holy crap, it's George and Mere... no. It's George and Oliv... No. Wait, it's George and Call... oh, nope, wrong again.

George O'MalleyIt's actually George and Izzie.

He certainly gets around for such a soft-spoken, insecure guy. But it is wrong to judge, after all, though cheating on your wife does fall outside the judge-not boundaries.

George and Callie had a fight. A fight. It's what married people do.

Never mind that Callie's own insecurities seem to creep into every corner of their relationship, or that George spilled the beans on Callie's heiress status or that he somehow always manages to say the wrong things.

None of these things give him the right to cheat on his wife.

Add to that the fact that he cheated on her with Izzie and the situation manages to get even worse. Callie and Izzie obviously already had issues with each other. Callie's issues stem from her jealousy of Izzie's looks and relationship with George. Izzie's apparently come from these pent up feelings she has been harboring for George.

But everyone has flaws, and everyone makes mistakes.

Take Cristina, for example. In an effort to save Burke from rival jealousy over past relationships, she sort of leaves out one of the most important relationships she's had: a three-year tryst with Burke's own idol and the possible new chief of surgery, Dr. Colin Marlow.

This opens Burke's eyes to something he should have seen from the start - Cristina digs authority figures. But if her admiration of Burke's medical abilities is the only thing keeping Cristina in the relationship, Burke doesn't want a part of it.

Now Cristina has an out. She can either fight for Preston and attempt to overcome this new hurdle in their rocky road toward marital bliss, or she can just let him go the same way she let past relationships fizzle out.

People are complicated. This is what makes them endearing and "important," as Meredith points out on multiple occasions. Her renewed take on life and love and friendship is refreshing and long-awaited.

Her father, Thatcher, and his wife have reached out to Meredith and she's finally reaching back, albeit timidly.

Alex is finally moving into the house with Izzie and Meredith, leaving his previous housing situation a mystery. But a lot about Alex is mysterious, which is part of what makes him so interesting. His growing attachment to Jane Doe is reminiscent of another intern's affection for her patient.

Yet no one can really blame him. He risked his own life to rescue this woman, and now she has no one else in the world except him.

Many things are now hanging in the balance at Seattle Grace, all awaiting decisions - the chief of surgery position, George and Callie's marriage, Burke and Cristina's relationship - but eventually, decisions will be made and consequences will be carried out, for good or bad.

Grey Chatter: The Miracle of Friendship

The real story of "Some Kind of Miracle" was friendship.

Izzie StevensA troubled friendship between George and Izzie, a broken friendship on the mend between Derek and Mark, the end of a tangled friendship between Chief Webber and Ellis Grey, and the very real, lasting bond between Cristina and Meredith.

Early in the episode, Izzie takes out her building frustration of not being able to help Meredith on Callie. But Callie holds her ground, as she should.

A distraught Izzie feels like she's losing George, but in her attempt to hold onto him, she might be driving him further away.

Mark Sloan shows an almost-human side as he tries to be a friend to Derek. It seems like they could both use a friend right now, and maybe enough water has finally passed under the bridge for that to happen.

Mark also accepts Addison's challenge to prove he still cares about her, meaning no sex for 60 days. If he's willing to go the distance, he could actually win her back. But even if Mark can do it, chances are Addison can't. She's very vulnerable and unstable right now.

Any advances of any kind from anyone, specifically single interns named Alex Karev, would surely be reciprocated on Addison's part.

The Chief's goodbye to Ellis Grey revealed just how much he did care about her throughout their affair and their subsequent friendship. He knew she would be happier in a better place, with her mind and body whole. But he's going to miss her. They have such a history together that most of his life is built around choices he made regarding Ellis.

It took Meredith nearly dying for Cristina to understand what it means to have Meredith as her "person." We got to understand a little bit of why Cristina does have such a hard time with intimacy. Her fear of losing the people she loves is very real, based on her experience with her father.

If Burke doesn't know this part of her life, he needs to find out. Such issues are bound to creep up later, and if their engagement and marriage are going to last, they need to understand each other a little bit better.

Meredith's own issues are brought to light by the insight of the people she meets in her afterlife. They know she sort of let herself drown, and eventually, Meredith admits this to Denny.

Meredith Grey

Through her conversation with Denny, she's able to see the pointlessness of letting her issues keep her from living her life. In Denny, Meredith is able to see the full picture of what both she and Derek would experience if she didn't recover from her accident.

Seeing the connection between Denny and Izzie is both heartbreaking and hopeful. But Meredith wants more than that.

Ellis, as she loses her own battle against her illness and meets Meredith in her afterlife, finally gives her the closure she needs to let go of her emotional baggage by telling her she's anything but ordinary.

With these words, Meredith takes off down the hall, back toward the room of doctors that are still working on bringing her back to life.

It's interesting that Cristina is by Meredith's side as she wakes from her brush with death. It's not Derek; it's not any of the other interns. It's Cristina.

Maybe this means their relationship will outlast all the others. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. But either way, both doctors learned something about themselves that will change their lives, and maybe even change the lives of those around them.

Grey Chatter: If Wishes Were Fishes...

Oh, how quickly things change for the interns and doctors at Seattle Grace.

In just eight days, an entire clinic was built, George and Callie eloped, and the entire hospital seems to have turned topsy-turvy.

Izzie is worried she wasted her eight million as the free clinic opens for business without the throngs of patients she had hoped for. But it is only the first day - surely things will pick up once word spreads a little more.

Dr. YangBut Izzie's concern over the clinic is soon forgotten when George and Callie show up, hand in hand, to announce they are married.

They eloped. Went to Vegas. And are now Mr. and Mrs. O'Malley.

It's sudden and surprising, and all of their friends are shocked. It's easy to understand everyone's reluctance in accepting Callie as George's wife - just a couple of weeks ago, he would hardly even look at her, and now they're husband and wife.

In a bizarre yet exciting case, a mysterious cancer patient shows up at the hospital with toxic blood. One by one, interns and doctors drop like flies after being exposed.

At first, George thinks his symptoms are a reaction to his hasty marriage. Maybe this gives us a little clue as to what's going on deep inside George's heart. He badly wants to be in love with Callie because they are so compatible, but did they move too quickly in tying the knot?

Grey Chatter: Expect the Unexpected

Two proposals, one retirement, and a sex machine added up to a whole lot of drama at Seattle Grace on last week's "Great Expectations."

Meredith and Derek continue their recent drama with a mini-fight, complete with an apology. But it seems that they're both staying committed to each other, at least for the time being.

Miranda BaileyIzzie decides to fund the free clinic that Bailey has contrived at such an opportune time.

It remains to be seen, however, how much this will affect her life as an intern, and if she will completely devote herself to doing good things with Denny's money.

It also remains to be seen what really inspired Bailey to open this clinic. But the Chief's vote of confidence in her will no doubt spur her forward and hopefully help to heal some of the self-doubt Burke imposed upon her.

The could-be-soon-to-be-open Chief of Surgery position has the otherwise calm, cool, and collected attendings acting like greedy children. Sloan, Montgomery, Burke, and Shepherd all throw their hats in the ring for a shot at Chief. However, not everyone is cut out to be the next chief.

While he appears to be talented (in many areas), Mark Sloan is just not fearless leader material. The entire hospital would no doubt stage a mutiny if he were chosen. Addison has potential, but she's emotional and she too easily gets wrapped up in patients' lives.

So that leaves Preston and Derek as the two main contenders. Both come complete with God-complexes, as well as questionable decisions in their respective pasts.

Grey Chatter: The Last Day

There were numerous underlying stories in the final days (and second installment) of this terrific two-part episode, "Six Days."

Izzie Does ItDerek is still having trouble sleeping, which has transformed the ever-happy MerDer into a relationship with nagging and annoyances and nit-picking. In other words, the honeymoon phase appears to be over.

Along with dealing with a crabby boyfriend, Meredith is dealing with her ever-present father, who is still lurking about the hospital.

Meredith doesn't want to see any part of herself in Thatcher, but Cristina and Izzie gleefully point out her resemblance to him.

In fact, Meredith's medical career may be one of the only things she has in common with her mother. And maybe this glimpse into her father's life will catapult her into trying to build a relationship with him. She desperately needs a relationship with her father, even if he is a little bumbling and awkward.

Izzie donated money so a girl could walk upright, a gesture that proves to Bailey that she is still capable of forming attachments to her patients. However, in Izzie's eyes, this is not always a bad thing. In fact, her caring and compassion may prove to be what sets her apart from the other surgeons.

Addison is dealing with her abortion of Mark's baby eight months ago. She's sure Mark wasn't ready to be a dad, and she never wanted a baby with him at all. She wanted Derek, but now she fears she's ending up alone - which may be leading her into Alex's arms.

Alex and Addison are clearly feeling something for each other that neither one is sure he or she should feel. But how many interns can be dating attendings at once? Surely there's some kind of limit.

But the main story of the episode centers on George. His father's organs are failing and there's nothing left to do but hope. George's friends stand by him, hoping with him. But things aren't looking good.

Something clicks in George's mind and he realizes that the Chief and Bailey proceeded with the surgery because of his father's wishes. George breaks down, letting out all his built up emotions from the past few days in a heartbreaking scene in front of the whole hospital.

When George and his family decide to let his dad go, his friends are right outside waiting for him. We learn that Cristina lost her own dad when she was young, and so she can sympathize with George in a way that none of the others can.

Hopefully, the tragedy is over for George and he can start moving on, in the same way Izzie has. A lot of things are still left hanging, and we can only wonder what surprises are just around the corner.

Grey Chatter: Daddy Issues

After a brief hiatus, Grey's Anatomy Insider's Seattle correspondent is back with her insightful "Grey Chatter" column. Here's her take on the drama and emotional turmoil that comprised "Six Days: Part I" ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meredith Grey
In this first part of a much-anticipated two-part saga, the interns pick up right where they left off. Izzie still hasn't deposited that darn check. George's dad is still waiting for surgery.
The passive-aggressive power struggle between Cristina and Burke rages on. And Meredith's dealing with some issues again, both with her father and with her boyfriend.
Meredith's dad is hanging around the hospital, waiting for news on his newborn granddaughter. This affects Meredith in ways she did not expect. She's trying to distance herself from her father and he just keeps popping into the picture.
Thatcher's obvious concern over his fragile granddaughter in the NICU has to contribute to the abandonment issues Meredith has.
George's dad is waiting for a surgery that results in no good news for his family. It's easy for George to put on a strong face for his family and even for his father. But the moment he sees his father after surgery, George practically collapses in tears, grasping Meredith's arm.
The two of them - Meredith and George - have a connection that is clearly seen in this exchange. They are both emotionally needy, normally blocking out people that would threaten their vulnerability. This is why they would have never worked as a couple. But now that their friendship seems to be heading in a good direction again, they "get" each other and can be there for each other.
George's father points out to George another person that always gets him - Callie. George may just be on his way to forgiving her. Their little dance party after inspecting George's dad's urine, followed by a quick kiss, might be enough to start breaking through the walls George has built.
Izzie's move to deposit the check is heartbreakingly hopeful. She's finally starting to live her life again, ready to scrub in on surgeries and get involved with patients. Maybe her newfound wealth will turn into something she'll use to help people. Maybe it will have something to do with the case of the girl with the curved spine whose insurance won't fund her $200,000 surgery.
Alex and Addison seem to be lighting the spark that has ignited between the two of them. Although, it seems there are underlying issues still to come to light between Addison and Mark. Maybe it will be enough to send Mark back to New York, or enough to keep Addison and Alex apart.
But one thing's for sure: the next part of this episode can only get better.
How We Operate
Grey Chatter: Blinded By the Light
Is it a coincidence that "Staring at the Sun" began with Meredith talking in her voiceover about blind spots at the same time that she and Derek are in the tub together? Could this be some foreshadowing about the impending doom about to play out in their relationship?
McDreamy in the TubBecause while seeing them together in the tub is deliciously steamy, it is hard to let go of all the drama and emotions that have led them to this point. It seems that at any moment, this bright and shiny existence may come crumbling down, just as it has before. On the other hand, they are each dark and twisty enough in their own ways to maybe make it work.
While this opening scene is certainly going down in Grey’s best scenes ever, the real story of the episode seems to be George. First of all, George and Cristina. Two people who aren’t often paired together, mainly because they are so different. But George’s dad has pulled them together in a heartbreaking way. Obviously, George wants what’s best for his dad, which normally would include the expertise of Cristina and Burke.
But George is also slowly figuring out Burke’s secret. It is somewhat ironic that the attributes that George respects in Preston – his honor, his confidence, his honesty – are the very things that Burke is currently lacking, forcing George to question his own integrity, and do the right thing.
Grey Chatter: The Dreaded "C" Word
To commit or not to commit? That's the question of the hour, the subject of last Thursday's "Let the Angels Commit," and the subject of our SeattleGirl's weekly Grey Chatter. Here's what the Insider's West Coast correspondent thought of the most recent Grey's Anatomy drama...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The title of this episode has to do with commitment. But it seems like it’s more about avoiding commitment than actual commitment. Except in the case of Cristina and Burke, of course. It’s fairly obvious from the way the episode ended -- a light bulb going off above Bailey’s head as she watched Cristina write on the OR board -- that things are going to get very bad very quickly for Burktina.

Burktina: Over the EdgeHowever, you do have to admire Cristina’s resolve.

She loves and worships Burke, for both personal and professional reasons. Whether she’s out to further her career or she’s just trying to protect her boyfriend, she’s putting it all on the line and proving herself to Burke. There’s a rumor going around of a wedding in the near future, and as of Thursday night’s show, it looks like Burke and Cristina could be in the running.

Then there’s George and Callie.

It’s actually kind of painful, all the flip-flopping going on in George’s mind. He likes Callie, but doesn’t love her. He gets jealous when he thinks she’s sleeping with someone else. She dumps George and now he wants her back. Is she a safety net for him? Does he want the icing but not the cake?

Grey Chatter: Weekly Spin From Seattle

Starting this Monday, our very own SeattleGirl will be providing her take on the events of the previous episode. Since there was no episode last week, she focused on the Season 3 premiere, "Time Has Come Today," which aired again Thursday. Below is the first edition of our Monday Grey Chatter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This first episode of the new season was promising in many ways. It wasn’t as jam-packed with the drama and medical cases as we’re used to, but the major things that we were looking for happened.
Meredith Grey: Overwhelmed?Derek told Meredith that he loves her.
Really, does anything else from the episode even matter?
He told her he loves her. And she didn’t say anything back. She stood there, first letting Finn go on and on about his hat being in some kind of ring. And then she stood there and listened to Derek profess his own love, verbally kicking himself for choosing Addison to begin with. And Meredith doesn’t say a word.
Maybe she’s regretting the decision she made last night, or maybe she’s overwhelmed with the two nearly perfect men who have just declared their devotion to her. Either way, her silence tells us that she’s beyond just indecisive -- she’s also dark and twisty.
The underlying theme, and the episode title, have to do with time. Time flying, time not waiting, time to let go, time to move on. To drive this point home, the episode itself flew from present happenings to intermittent flashbacks, usually in a whirlwind of emotions and events.
  • We see Derek leaving Addison, throwing her clothes and her crying form out into the rain.
  • We see Meredith starting to piece together the details of her mother and father’s separation.
  • We see Izzie and Alex meeting for the first time, as well as Meredith and George and Meredith and Derek.
These are important things. We’re seeing into the past lives of the people we have come to know at Seattle Grace. Now that we’re all a few episodes wiser, we can also pick out the foreshadowing that occurs in this first episode.
