Five burning questions we've been pondering regarding Grey's Anatomy, which despite of its ups and downs, will start its fifth season in this fall:

1. Will Izzie leave Seattle Grace? Some have speculated that Katherine Heigl's recent comments about Grey's Anatomy were an effort to get out of her contract, which is said to extend through 2009-10. See broader examination of this topic here.

2. Meredith and Derek: What next? Amazingly, Shonda Rhimes was saying well in advance how she wanted to get Meredith and Derek together for good by the Season 4 finale. And she did, with a terrific season ender. But if they really are together for good, and everything's blissful where's the drama? The tension? The entertainment? Can this normal, happy couple really sustain itself on TV, or are we really addicted to watching our two favorite lovers be torn apart by one issue after another?

Will Grey's Anatomy as we know it cease to exist with these two actually together?

3. Will ratings rebound? Grey's Anatomy started its fourth season battling for the best ratings of any scripted show on TV, but after the writers' strike, the show took a hit. Granted, the strike hurt everyone, but Grey's Anatomy seemed to lose its buzz along with the ratings. Was it just a blip, or is this a sign that interest is waning?

This spring, Grey's Anatomy introduced a lesbian story line with a romance between the confident, sexually voracious Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and the professionally ambitious yet personally restrained Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith).

The plot line, culminating in the season finale, "Freedom," offered both the drama Grey's Anatomy has become known for and a groundbreaking truthfulness network television has rarely achieved when it comes to lesbian relationships.

For Callie and Erica, the season ended with a passionate kiss...

With that kiss, Callie and Erica became the only regular lesbian or bi-sexual female characters currently on network television.

This is also the first time that two regular stars on a network show have begun a lesbian romance, as opposed to one becoming involved with a new lesbian character introduced expressly for that relationship.

To prepare for the story line, which will continue next season, the Grey's Anatomy producers consulted with GLAAD, which worked with the series on a previous story line about a transgender character with breast cancer.

Romance â€" both onscreen and off â€" was the topic of the day at the Chrysalis Ball, held Saturday night at a private estate in Brentwood, Calif.

The hosts: Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane and wife Rebecca Gayheart.

Dane's character, Mark Sloan, had a rough season as far as his love life goes. But as far as his own marriage to Gayheart goes, he couldn't be happier:

"It is great. I don't know how I got so lucky," he said.

Eric Dane added that he and Gayheart are "working on" kids.

Several Private Practice stars â€" Kate Walsh and Tim Daly included â€" as well as other stars (like Eva Mendes, pictured) were there to support Dane and Gayheart.

Among the Grey's Anatomy contingent was Katherine Heigl, who momentarily misplaced her spouse, Josh Kelley, and began joking that married life is "Great ... except that I've lost my husband, so it could be over now, I guess!"

Heigl is managing to juggle working on a hit show and a busy movie schedule (she is now filming The Ugly Truth): "It's a real blessing because I love both and so I can do them both and not be completely ready to blow my brains out."

T.R. Knight and boyfriend Mark Cornelsen were all smiles, saying that their relationship is "very good, so far," but even with same-sex marriage now legal in California, they're not about to tie the knot anytime soon.

As far as romance on Grey's Anatomy, Knight was as surprised as anyone by George's kiss with Lexie at the end of the May season finale.

"What was up with that?" he asked.
