Our Grey's Anatomy Wish List For Season Five

It's hard to believe Grey's Anatomy is entering its fifth season next month. In honor of this much-anticipated, make-or-break fifth campaign, we've put together five things we're hoping for when the Grey's Anatomy cast returns September 25 ...

  1. MerDer love. Not MerDer angst. Further elaboration unnecessary.
  2. Happiness for The Chief. We know Chief Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) is more of a supporting character, but his on-again, off-again tribulations with Adele make no sense. Let's have them stay together, be happy and just ... carry on.
  3. A Cristina Yang love interest. Regardless of how you feel about Isaiah Washington, the show has not been the same without Preston Burke. While no one could replace that man, a new love interest for Cristina would be a welcome this year, as Yang finally tries to put the past behind her.
  4. A spectacular Izzie flameout. We heart Izzie, and certainly don't wish our girl any harm. But we're getting a wee bit tired of see this terrific character reduced to whining and treading water emotionally. Note to producers - give her something interesting to do, or get rid of her in style!
  5. More Alex back story! The finale of Season Four gave us more of a glimpse into the mind of Alex Karev than we've had in... well, four whole seasons. We hope the scene pictured below is the gateway to more interesting revelations about a young doctor whose personal life - and background - is still the least known.

What's on YOUR wish list for Season Five of Grey's Anatomy?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Mum on Grey's Anatomy Return

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, beloved by Grey’s Anatomy fans as doomed patient Denny Duquette, isn’t ruling out the possibility of a Season Five return.

His comments come after said return has pretty much been confirmed.

“We’ll see,” Morgan said of rumors that Denny would return to Grey’s Anatomy next fall in a possible brain tumor storyline for Katherine Heigl’s character, Izzie Stevens.

“I read that, too. Who knows what’s going to happen?”

If the call does come from the medical drama, Morgan said he'd be thrilled to be romantically paired with Katherine Heigl again on-screen.

“She’s awesome,” Morgan said. “I had a blast with her. She’s wonderful and I can’t say enough good things about her and that whole cast.”

Morgan and Heigl

Morgan and Heigl in Season Two's memorable plot line.

As for Heigl’s recent Emmy flap - which some perceived as an insult to the writers of Grey's Anatomy - Jeffrey Dean Morgan says her comments were most likely misunderstood, and even if they weren’t, he likes her candor.

“I think that stuff gets blown completely out of proportion,” he said. “She just speaks her mind. That’s exactly what she does. Maybe more people should speak their mind.”

Trio of Guest Stars Lined Up For Season 5 Opener

Dr. Bailey and the gang — but mainly Bailey — will have their hands full in the two-hour Grey's Anatomy Season Five premiere, TV Guide reports.

Why? A trio of gal pals of a certain age descends on Seattle Grace.

In the September 25 episode, Bernadette Peters, Mariette Hartley and Kathy Baker will guest star as friends who each require the hospital's care.

This comes the very same night that Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprises his role of Denny Duquette, although our guess is that is a separate story line.

Vintage Grey's Anatomy

We came across this yesterday and thought you might enjoy it - an original promotional poster for Grey's Anatomy when it debuted in March 2005 as a mid-season replacement for Boston Legal. Boy, Season One feels like forever ago now!

Who knew what started out with little fanfare in a nine-episode run that spring would become such a hit. Note the tagline "Operations. Temptations. Frustrations." This is interesting as Complications was a working title for the pilot at one point.

ABC Sort of Denies Plans to Kill Off Heigl

Rumors have been running rampant about star Katherine Heigl's departure from Grey's Anatomy. The most prevalent theory, bolstered by news of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's return to Grey's Anatomy, revolves around Izzie contracting a brain tumor.

Yesterday, ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson commented briefly on the subject of Heigl's future, and while he said that Izzie isn't going anywhere, reading between the lines a bit reveals some awfully ambiguous statements.

According to McPherson, Katherine Heigl is still very much in the mix with Grey's Anatomy, and Izzie Stevens won't be offed anytime soon.

In fact, he promised the following:

"Katherine is absolutely staying with the show. She has an unbelievable storyline this year, which is central to everything going on this season. Shonda Rhimes is really excited about that; she’s the one who actually crafted that."

Grey's Anatomy News & Gossip: Jeffrey Dean Morgan to Guest Star Once Again; Izzie Has Brain Tumor?

According to today's Us Weekly, Katherine Heigl's Dr. Izzie Stevens could be killed off Grey's Anatomy next season - a piece of gossip that we've already discussed at length, and the source of which must be considered here.

Heigl, 29, withdrew herself from the Emmy Awards process, saying that she didn’t feel she was “given the material this season” to warrant an award.

In response to this well-publicized griping, the Grey's Anatomy producers are considering giving Izzie Stevens a brain tumor, according to Us Weekly.

“Shonda Rhimes and the writers are pissed,” a source says. “It’s their way of screwing with her. She won’t know whether she’s going to live or die.”

Don

Regardless, there’s some good - and actually confirmed - news for fans: memorable Grey's Anatomy guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan will reprise his role as Denny Duquette again! As we know, Denny passed away in Season Two, then returned to the show in Season Three during Meredith Grey's temporary visit to the afterlife.

How will be return to the show yet again in Season Five? One popular theory is that Izzie will begin seing visions of Denny after contracting her tumor.

A second source adds that such a plot, ironically, would be great for Katherine Heigl: “If her character does get a tumor, she’ll probably get an Emmy!”

A rep for ABC commented only briefly, saying, “We can confirm that [Jeffrey Dean Morgan] will be back, but we are not releasing any further details.”

Grey's Anatomy Spoilers, News & Gossip

Some interesting Grey's Anatomy spoilers and news courtesy of venerable TV spy Michael Ausiello, now with Entertainment Weekly, in his recent column ...

Q: I’ve got a burning Grey’s Anatomy question leftover from your TV Guide days: Which of those many Season Four finale smooches was the big “major kiss no one would see coming” that Shonda Rhimes alluded to?
A: Well, contrary to popular belief, she was not referring to Mer and Der’s candlelit trailer park pucker. As Shonda Rhimes said, although she feels all of the kisses featured in the episode “were worth leaning into the television for,” the one she felt was the most surprising “was Alex and Izzie. But my personal favorite is Bailey kissing Baby Tuck."

Q: Is Katherine Heigl still employed at Grey’s Anatomy?
A: She showed up to this season’s first table read last week, so it looks like it. Oh, to be a fly on that wall.

RoseDer

Q: Got anything new on Grey’s Anatomy? Please tell me they’ve gotten rid of Rose!
A: Nope, she (i.e. Lauren Stamile) was at the staff table read, too! And as TV Guide reported yesterday, she was doing what she does best: stirring up trouble!

Q: Please make our week by spilling anything you know about the Shonda Rhimes-penned two-hour Grey's Anatomy Season Five premiere.
A: There will be a slight time lapse between the May finale and the new season premiere. We’re talking more than a few days and less than a month.

Q: Any Grey's Anatomy scoop, specifically related to Callie and Erica?
A: There’s a rumor going around that Callie will start off the season pregnant (with a little McSteamy in the oven), but a reliable Grey’s Anatomy insider insists it’s “not true.” What do you think about all of this?

Tonight's Episode: "The Heart of the Matter"
