Patrick Dempsey Discusses Writers' Strike

What impact will the Hollywood writers' strike have on Grey's Anatomy? In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Patrick Dempsey said the ABC hit drama - like many others - is not prepared for the pending strike.

While promoting his new film, Enchanted, Patrick told ET that the problem is "that we're not that far ahead script-wise. I think we'll have enough shows that take us through Christmas, and after that we'll see if that's the season or not."

Patrick Smiles

When asked if Hollywood is looking at a virtual shutdown due to the Writers Guild of America strike, Patrick Dempsey said, "I think there's a real chance of that happening. It's going to be very bad for television, certainly. The season will be wiped out if [the strike] happens and continues for too long."

The Grey's Anatomy star, who plays Dr. Derek Shepherd, also expressed deep concern for crew members and those in the Hollywood community.

"My concern is not so much for myself really, because I'll be alright, but I think how long this strike lasts is going to affect a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck - they are going to be damaged profoundly by this, and that's a tragedy," he said.

"I think a lot of people and many families are going to be in a difficult place in their lives; hopefully we can come to some sort of understanding and resolve this soon enough that it doesn't affect those people."

Unless an agreement can be reached, the strike is expected to begin today. Here's hoping it can be resolved amicably soon and that the series we love - and the talented men and women who make it possible - won't be disrupted.

"Kung Fu Fighting" Sneak Preview #2

Another preview of this week's "Kung Fu Fighting." Dr. Hahn meets the (ridiculously attractive) men of Seattle Grace, while Cristina and Izzie argue over who gets to assist the new head of cardio. Pretty funny. Tonight should be a good episode.

"You are flirting with cardio... I am married to cardio!"

"Kung Fu Fighting" Sneak Preview

Below is a sneak preview of Thursday's all-new episode of Grey's Anatomy, "Kung Fu Fighting." Guess it didn't take long for Dr. Erica Hahn to delve into heart surgeries at Seattle Grace. Here, Dr. Hahn and Izzie, along with the Chief, are in the middle of an operation and come across a complication that could soon become problematic.

It should be a good episode. We also have our photo gallery up for the new episode if you are interested in checking it out. There may be minor spoilers therein.

Writers' Strike Threatens Grey's Anatomy, Other Shows

TV viewers hooked on cliffhanger episodes of hit shows such as Heroes and Grey's Anatomy could be left dangling if writers walk off the job.

With Hollywood writers poised to go on strike as soon as Thursday, TV networks were bracing for the need to fill time with reality shows, game shows, even reruns.

Viewers could start seeing an onslaught of unscripted entertainment by early next year, when series such as Desperate Housewives and Heroes run out of episodes.

"I was in a network meeting (Monday), and they were referring to the fact the timing is good for reality producers," reality TV producer Mark Cronin said.

"It's going from 50 mph to 70 mph," Cronin said, adding that networks must "protect themselves and fill their airspace" amid the upcoming writers strike.

The Writers Guild of America and the group representing film and TV producers were set to meet this week with a federal mediator after contentious talks.

With the contract set to expire at midnight Wednesday, negotiators remain far apart on the central issue of raising payment for profits on DVDs and TV shows offered digitally on the Internet, cellphones and other devices.

A newcomer to TV's writing ranks earns about $70,000 per season for full-time work on a show like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives or Heroes.

MerDer Communication

Veteran TV show writers who move up to a story-editor position would get at least a low six-figure salary, with a "written by" credit on an hour-long script paying an additional $30,000 plus residuals.

Writers are free to negotiate for higher pay, and people who produce or co-produce - called "hyphenates" in industry parlance - earn more.

If writers walk out, the effect wouldn't be felt immediately. Networks have enough episodes of shows like CSI and Ugly Betty written and in production to last at least the end of the year and possibly into February of 2008.

After that, most schedules will run into trouble.

Promo For "Kung Fu Fighting"

"The more available he gets, the more I pull away." So Meredith says, referring to you know who. "Tonight we will have hot sex." So Izzie says to a different you know who.

This week's all-new Grey's Anatomy episode, "Kung Fu Fighting" - which, for some reason, ABC is apparently running from 9:00-10:07 - looks like a good one. Here's ABC's first promo. More pics, promos and sneak preview clips to be posted soon!

"Haunt You Every Day" Preview Clips

Here's a sneak preview of Thursday's all-new Grey's Anatomy episode, "Haunt You Every Day." In this minute-long clip, Meredith and Derek talk about her mother's ashes... which she has on her person for some reason. Funny stuff. Check out the video below:

Follow the jump for another, more intense clip, in which Izzie and Cristina debate a decision that Dr. Hahn has made - and whether Cristina unfairly judges Izzie when Meredith is guilty of similar indiscretions. Looks like another good episode ...
