Sara Ramirez to Return to the Stage

It surely will be tempting for Sara (pronounced Sah-rah) Ramirez to break into song this weekend while she’s narrating Prokofiev’s “Peter & the Wolf” in performances by the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

“I can see myself turning around and saying, ‘Can I get a Frank Sinatra tune?’” says the Grey’s Anatomy star with a contagious laugh.

“You’re on the stage with (an orchestra), and it just blows you away. It’s like you’ve got this powerhouse sound coming from behind you, and it’s so cool,” she continues. “So to be involved with it again in any way, shape or form is really exciting to me.”

Sara Ramirez will be returning to her stage actress roots.

The idea of the TV series lead singing “I’ve Got the World on a String” with strings really isn’t as strange as it may sound. Though most folks know her as the spirited (non-singing) Dr. Callie Torres on the ABC prime time medical drama, others know the Juilliard School graduate primarily for her stage work.

Ramirez’s Tony Award-winning performance as the Lady of the Lake in “Spamalot” was her calling card. Theater devotees may also recall her debut in Paul Simon’s “The Capeman,” with a cast that included Marc Anthony and Rubén Blades.

She’s particularly looking forward to working with the youth orchestra. Though she has sung challenging work by Stephen Sondheim opposite Patti LuPone in a 2002 Chicago concert, this will be the first time she has both narrated the Prokofiev family favorite and worked with a youth orchestra.

A former child performer herself, Sara Ramirez looks forward to collaborating with the youngsters. The 32-year-old actress moved from her native Mexico to San Diego after her parents’ divorced while she was in grade school.

Her mother enrolled her in that city’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, which she attended from fourth through 12th grades.

T.R. Knight, Sara Ramirez Walk For Charity

They may be having marital problems on the set, but… at least they’re good friends off it! T.R. Knight (George) and Sara Ramirez (Callie) are seen in the photo below at the 23rd annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles, which took place October 21.

The event, attended by this pair of Grey’s Anatomy cast members as well as other celebrities, set fundraising and attendance records, raising more than $3.9 million for AIDS Project Los Angeles and other AIDS service organizations.

Sara Ramirez Discusses Callie Torres, Broadway

Sara Ramirez didn’t join the cast of Grey’s Anatomy until Season Two and was not made a full-time cast member until the start of Season Three.

But Sara Ramirez’s character of Dr. Callie Torres - recently promoted to Seattle Grace chief resident - sure is in the thick of things here in Season Four.

In fact, Calliope’s turbulent love life has been getting a large part of the attention this season, thanks to a possible split from husband George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), who had an affair with his best friend Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).

“Like all the characters on the show, I think Callie has her flaws, issues, hang-ups. We don’t know all the ins-and-outs of why she truly was with George. I think there was a pure love there but I’m sure Callie has other issues behind clinging onto something that just isn’t right,” Ramirez told the Los Angeles Daily News.

While the role on Grey’s Anatomy has made the Mexican-American hottie widely known to television audiences, the New York theater scene has been aware of Sara for some time now. In fact, Ramirez won the 2005 Tony Award for her performance as The Lady of the Lake in “Monty Python’s Spamalot.”

Sara Ramirez is certain she will return to the stage at some point.

“I consider New York and theater my home base, where I sort of grew up,” she said. “I miss it and I hope they’ll have me back whether it’s a musical - it doesn’t have to be on Broadway - or a play. I miss the theater, the whole symbiotic relationship between actor and audience and being on stage. The live factor.”

Grey’s Anatomy Stars in GLAAD PSA

In this public service announcement for GLAAD, Grey’s Anatomy stars T.R. Knight and Sara Ramirez, along with former star Kate Walsh and some other familiar faces from ABC shows, deliver a powerful message about tolerance. Check it out:

Grey’s Anatomy Stars Film GLAAD PSAs

T.R., Sara and KateA trio of talented actors from the Grey’s Anatomy family are featured in a new ad campaign preaching tolerance for gays and lesbians.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) on Tuesday released 25 new public service ads that it will encourage TV networks to air.

The ads feature celebrities talking about either the power of anti-gay words or the importance of accepting a gay or lesbian family member.

T.R. Knight, Sara Ramirez of Grey’s Anatomy and Kate Walsh (formerly of Grey’s Anatomy and now the star of Private Practice) all made their own ads.

Alexandra Billings, a transgender actress who appeared in one episode of the hit ABC medical drama, also participated in the GLAAD ad campaign.

Former star Isaiah Washington, who is filming Bionic Woman after not being offered a contract to return to Grey’s Anatomy, was not included, although the actor filmed a separate PSA on behalf of GLAAD that aired on ABC earlier this year.

GLAAD did not specifically seek out Grey’s Anatomy stars, Damon Romine, the organization’s entertainment media director, said.

Happy Birthday, Sara Ramirez!

A simple post to wish a happy birthday to Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez, who we don’t hear enough about. Much as some fans may not always like her character, Dr. Callie Torres, there’s no doubting this actress’ beauty and talent.

Sara Ramirez is 32!

Our guess is that tonight, Sara Ramirez will be celebrating her birthday at the rehearsal dinner for Kate Walsh, whose wedding is scheduled for this weekend! It’s a good weekend for Grey’s Anatomy cast members past and present.

Kate Walsh and Friends Celebrate Her Bachelorette Party in Las Vegas

Former Grey’s Anatomy star Kate Walsh celebrated her bachelorette party in her honor with pals on Saturday night at Tao nightclub inside the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

Among those on hand to help Kate Walsh celebrate were Grey’s co-star Sara Ramirez, and co-star Justin Chambers‘ wife, Keisha Chambers.

While no date has been announced (at least none that we know of), it looks like a wedding is in the works and will happen soon. Kate Walsh, 39, has been engaged to studio executive Alex Young for about three months.

The Season 4 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, titled “A Change Is Gonna Come,” airs September 27 at 9 p.m. on ABC. The premiere of Private Practice airs the day before — Wednesday, September 26, also at 9 p.m.

Sara Ramirez in “Got Milk?” Campaign

Actress Sara Ramirez, a.k.a. Callie Torres, a.k.a. Dr. Calliope Iphegenia Torres O’Malley, joined an exclusive club in being added to the talented cast of Grey’s Anatomy during Season 2.

Now she’s the latest celebrity to sport the infamous milk mustache. See below. The Sara Ramirez “Got Milk?” ad reads:

In show business your figure, well, shows. That’s why I drink milk. Studies suggest the nutrients in milk can play an important role in maintaining a healthy weight. Staying active, eating right, and drinking 24 ounces of lowfat or fat free milk a day helps you look your best. Bravo.”

Great anatomy, indeed. For more information, visit thinkaboutyourdrink.com. For a cast member who doesn’t get a lot of credit or attention, relative to her fellow stars, Sara Ramirez has always been terrific in our minds. We hope to see more of her in the up coming years!

Sara Ramirez: I’ll Miss Kate Walsh!

With Kate Walsh leaving to star in her own spinoff series, the set of Grey’s Anatomy just won’t be the same.

That’s according to her Grey’s co-star, Sara Ramirez.

Kate & Sara“I think she is amazing, and I am going to miss her to death,” a smiling Ramirez said Wednesday at a party in New York City for People En Espanol’s “50 Most Beautiful” issue.

“[Kate Walsh] is an enormously talented woman, and I think she is so much fun to watch,” added Ramirez.

“I wish her continued success.”

Walsh’s popular character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, is leaving Seattle Grace for a new life in California as the basis for her new show, Private Practice.

Asked about Walsh’s real-life plans to marry Alex Young, a production co-president at 20th Century Fox, Sara Ramirez says:

“They’re lovely people. I hope it’ll be a beautiful wedding.”

Walsh, 39, announced her engagement last week.

As for her own career, the Spamalot Tony-winning Ramirez, who plays Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy, relishes the opportunity to be a role model for women.

“I’m very proud to be in this business at this particular time, and I just hope the opportunity will continue to come where I can show the world that there are other sizes, other personalities,” she said.

“Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.”

Sara Ramirez Signs Record Contract

Sara RamirezWe’ve already seen her rock out in her underwear on Grey’s Anatomy.

Now Tony-winning actress Sara Ramirez, who plays the feisty wife of George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), Callie, has signed a deal to record her own album.

“All I can say is that Eric Idle and John Du Prez, who were the writers of Spamalot, are writing the album,” Ramirez told TV Guide at the Step Up Inspiration Awards, where she was honored for mentoring young girls.

Although her lips are sealed about the disc’s sound, Sara Ramirez — who has already inked a contract with Universal Music Group — did reveal that she’d be spending her summer break from Grey’s Anatomy in the studio recording the album.

But the Mexico native did let a few details slip about the love triangle brewing on Grey’s Anatomy between George, Callie and Izzie.

“Callie is just showing up doing her job, oblivious to everything,” says Ramirez.

So will she call it quits after discovering George slept with Izzie?

“I think she knows her relationship with George is in sort of a delicate place,” she says. “But she’s a strong lady. She knows what she wants so I’m sure she’ll go to any lengths to get it!”

Hopefully, this means we’ll see more of Calliope Iphigenia Torres-O’Malley in next year’s Season 4 — but Ramirez isn’t talking just yet.

“Am I back next season?” she asks with a laugh. “Maybe. This character’s just been so much fun to play. Acting with this group of people has been a master class in episodic television. For now, I’m just enjoying the ride.”
