A Conversation With Kate Walsh

Her shiny, cinnamon-colored waves bouncing with every step, the 5'9" Kate Walsh looks picture-perfect. But there's something about her mischievous smile that makes you think she'd walk straight into a pole just to get a laugh. In person, Walsh is infinitely funnier than Dr. Addison Shepherd, the intimidating surgeon she plays on the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy.

Kate Walsh: Funnier Than Addison"When I first came on the show, my character was like a Wicked Witch of the East, dressed in Prada," she told Women's Health before sitting down for an exclusive interview. "Then throughout the season you see her becoming a little more vulnerable, a little more like me."

Walsh, 39, was born in California, grew up in Arizona, and studied theater in Chicago before moving to New York.

She headed to Los Angeles seven years ago, and though she earned some fans as Nicki on The Drew Carey Show, she remained relatively unfamous before joining Grey's Anatomy during Season 2.

Life has changed dramatically since, and Walsh admits to wearing sunglasses in airports now, after a fan ran up and literally screamed in her face.

Yet despite newfound stardom, she doesn't seem at all self-conscious amid a crowded Hollywood lunch spot. Here's what she told the magazine:

WOMEN'S HEALTH: I hate to sound corny, but you're glowing. Did you just work out?
KATE WALSH: Well... I was supposed to do Pilates this morning. I got as far as putting the sports bra on. Then I realized there was no way I was about to drive through traffic and go to the gym. Noooo. So I threw my bathrobe on over the bra and read the paper. Sometimes I hope that through osmosis I might get a workout — just by wearing the clothes.

WH: You wore a fat suit when you starred on The Drew Carey Show. Did that give you perspective on what it feels like to struggle with weight?
KW: I don't think there's any woman who doesn't struggle with body image or weight. I was intoxicated with the story line on the show — a woman who worked hard to lose weight then dates this guy who eats. And she eats with him and gradually gets bigger and bigger until she can't stand herself. I remember going out to eat wearing the fat suit, and some people stared at me like I was an animal going to the trough. People can be cruel.

Life's a Party For the Lovely Kate Walsh

Kate Walsh: A Little Car CrazyLife for Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh is all about hospital rounds.

That and drinks with a European prince.

Her character, Addison Shepherd, may have broken up with Dr. McDreamy, but Walsh, 39, isn't splitting from Seattle Grace any time soon.

The actress talked to People about heating up with Eric Dane (a.k.a. Dr. McSteamy), facing off against CSI and her first big splurge -- for which her handsome on-screen ex, Patrick Dempsey, is reportedly to blame.

Q: So what's the deal with the new guy, Eric Dane?
A: He's like a statue. Every time he pauses, he's just gorgeous. And so nice and so talented.

Q: Is this the end for Addison and Derek?

A: You'll see some interesting things play out. There aren't tidy beginnings and endings. It's always messy, and (no pun intended) there's always a gray area.

Q: Your character wasn't too popular with fans at first. Has that changed?
A: Even if fans want Derek to be with Meredith, they sympathize with Addison. She's just like every woman struggling to make a relationship work.

Q: Were you stressed about Grey's Anatomy going up against CSI on Thursdays?
A: Yeah, I was nervous. CSI is a great show -- I was in it! [She played a transsexual informant.] But they are two different animals. There's room for both of us. You know, that's why we have the TiVo.

Q: Do anything fun on hiatus?

A: I mostly did press. We went all over Europe promoting Grey's Anatomy. It's huge everywhere. [The cast] went to Monaco and got an invitation to dinner with the prince. My stylist said, "So I see on your itinerary, cocktails at the palace. Is that, like, the palace?" I was like, "Yeah, [it's] not a club... The palace!"

Q: Has your life changed in the past year?

A: I had one big splurge, which I am driving now. It's a 1985 Aston Martin convertible. When I moved [to L.A. seven years ago] I got a station wagon. Then I got a little car crazy. I have to say, Patrick Dempsey did influence me a lot in that area.

Q: Any buyer's remorse?
A: No! This was hand-built. It's gorgeous. An elegant British muscle car. It makes doing errands much more palatable.

Dynamic Walsh Leaves Mark On Grey's

"And you must be the woman who's been screwing my husband."

With that line, the striking Dr. Addison Shepherd entered TV infamy. It was at the close of the first season of Grey's Anatomy that Addison marched toward her estranged spouse, Dr. Derek Shepherd, and his intern/lover Meredith Grey, in the halls of Seattle Grace Hospital.

Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery ShepherdPlayed brilliantly by Kate Walsh, Addison (right) presented an unexpected face from Derek's not-too-recent past. With the addition of Walsh, Grey's Anatomy established a signature love triangle -- and then got some unplanned-for results, a New York Daily News column says.

Instead of being just a black-clad, wronged wife with her hair coiled tight, Addison became a thinking woman's heroine.

Addison, too, had guilt issues -- she had previously slept with Derek's best friend - but was also sympathetic; a dedicated prenatal OB-GYN, she had come to Seattle Grace ready to make amends.

While the character flits between steely and humane, alternating some biting put-downs with a comforting bedside manner, the woman who plays her breaks the mold in a very Grey's kind of way.

"Originally, I knew very little about this character other than the fact that she supposedly had an affair," says Walsh, who joined toward the end of the show's debut half-season.

Kate Walsh Withdraws From Movie

Kate WalshSources say that Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh will no longer appear in Dimension Films' production of 1408, as previously reported.

According to Variety, scheduling conflicts with Grey's Anatomy forced Kate to withdraw from the picture, an adaption of the Stephen King novel about a haunted hotel that also stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Walsh will be replaced by Mary McCormack, who most recently appeared in the acclaimed TV Drama The West Wing.

While it's too bad we don't get to see more of Kate on the big screen, we can look at it as her devoting more time to Grey's Anatomy. Then again, as many readers have expressed in our long-running Meredith vs. Addison face-off, perhaps you aren't too thrilled about that prospect.

Walsh Will Star In Stephen King Adaptation

TV Guide reports that Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh has signed on to star opposite John Cusack in the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's 1408.

Kate WalshKing hails from the state of Maine, as does Patrick Dempsey, who plays the husband of Walsh's Grey's Anatomy character, Dr. Addison Shepherd. Coincidence? Absolutely.

In 1408, Cusack will play an investigator of paranormal occurrences who encounters real terror when he checks into the notorious Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel. Walsh plays his ex-wife and mother of his young daughter, while Samuel L. Jackson will also assume an important role.

Mikael Hafstrom is directing the movie, which was adapted for the screen by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski.
