The lovely Ellen Pompeo attended the 32nd annual National Italian American Foundation Gala in Washington, D.C. and received a NIAF Special Achievement Award in Entertainment for her portrayal of Dr. Meredith Grey.

She joined director Martin Scorsese at the gala, as well as Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Mary Margaret Valenti, the widow of Jack Velenti (president of the Motion Picture Association of America).

The new edition of American Way magazine features Grey's Anatomy's leading lady, Ellen Pompeo, and her native city of Boston. It's a very cool article, and starts with six things every fan should know about the amazing Ellen Pompeo...

1. She was born in the Boston suburb of Everett, Mass.
2. Her fiance, music producer Christopher Ivery, grew up 10 minutes away in Cambridge, Mass., and knew Pompeo's father, though he and Ellen did not meet until many years later in Los Angeles.
3. Ellen Pompeo returns to visit Boston at least once a year.
4. Ellen's sister, Maureen Pompeo, still lives in the Boston area and is on the board of The Home For Little Wanderers, a charity that provides adoption services and shelter for children seeking protection from abuse.
5. The acclaimed actress has received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Meredith Grey, the title character on Grey's Anatomy.
6. Pompeo still loves the city, especially its history and green spaces.

Many Grey's Anatomy fans are aware of Ellen Pompeo's acting resume, as well as her great personality. But here are five fun facts about the actress you might not know - complete with her quotes at times - courtesy of People magazine ...

1. On her very first day playing Leonardo DiCaprio's lover in the movie Catch Me If You Can, Ellen Pompeo "had to have a simulated sex scene," she later told the Chicago Tribune. "I can't say it was difficult, but ... it was a little awkward, sex with Leonardo DiCaprio on my first day."

2. Before working with Ellen Pompeo in the 2002 film Moonlight Mile, Jake Gyllenhaal hit on her. "He wasn't Jake Gyllenhaal then," she told Playboy. "I didn't know what to say, because he'd come over with these compliments and he's much younger than I am. I just said, 'Well, maybe we'll work together someday.'"

3. When asked what famous woman would she like to make out with, Ellen Pompeo said, "Ooh! Angelina Jolie. She's gorgeous. Or Sandra Oh."

4. Ellen Pompeo isn't impressed with her newfound fame since Grey's Anatomy became huge. "I don't find acting to be a particularly noble way to make a living," she says. "I'm not saving anybody's life, I'm not a teacher, I'm not working for UNICEF. I don't think I'm some big deal."

5. Ellen Pompeo was famously Punk'd by TV prankster Ashton Kutcher in 2005. The set-up: A sexy waitress hit on her boyfriend (now fiance), Chris Ivery, who was in on it and tipped her $200 on Pompeo's credit card. Ellen Pompeo's flustered reaction: she threatened to gouge the waitress with a fork!

The awesome Ellen Pompeo enjoyed a break from filming Grey's Anatomy by taking a Sunday stroll on the beach with one of her pet dogs in Malibu, Calif.

The Grey's Anatomy star enjoyed a fun summer. Ellen Pompeo revealed to USA Today that she recently babysat co-star Patrick Dempsey's baby twins!

"Over the summer, Ellen Pompeo and her fiancé, Chris Ivery, visited Dempsey and wife Jillian in London while he was shooting a film in Scotland. Pompeo helped babysit the couple's twin sons, now eight months, and says she can easily tell them apart: Sullivan "is a little more serious and a little bigger, maybe an athlete, and Darby looks more like a thinker and a poet. He may be the artist."

In an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the set of Grey's Anatomy, USA Today's William Keck lends his observations of what goes on that we don't see...

Sandra Oh looks sleepy, wrapped in a parka and heading to her chair. Hers is special compared with all the others' standard-issue director's chairs. Oh's has extra padding, a fancy curved foot rest and a canvas compartment under the seat. While the other actors have their full names silk-screened onto the backs of their chairs, Sandra Oh's is marked with two block letters: OH. She never talks to on-set journalists, but she offers a friendly late-in-the-day wink as she walks by.

Trailer mates

Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) shares his trailer, or "tin box," as he calls it, with Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens). "I hear her loud mouth all the time â€" girl's got a loud mouth," he kids. Heigl slams right back: She says she has to listen to "trailer buddy" Chambers' daily doses of Judge Judy or Montel Williams. "I think he falls asleep with the TV on," she playfully groans. Chambers has more expansive digs off-set. Over the summer he purchased a California home with his wife Keisha. Each of his five kids now has his or her own room!

Cute little cuss

Sandra Oh has a habit of playfully cussing in scenes when she's not on camera, at one point asking Ellen Pompeo, "What the (expletive) was that?" and calling Pompeo's Meredith "a whore." Says T.R. Knight (George), who shares his on-set trailer with Oh: "She has done that, always."

TOP ROW: Newlywed Kate Walsh is red hot in her cowl-neck crimson satin Pamela Dennis gown, Neil Lane diamonds and matching lips, while engaged Ellen Pompeo that her "boyfriend" Michael Kors created her feminine navy gown that she paired with jewels from Fred Leighton.

BOTTOM ROW: Katherine Heigl is a throwback to Old Hollywood in her fish tail Zac Posen gown, Mary Norton clutch and classic red lips, while Sandra Oh is the picture of refined elegance in her black and white Bottega Veneta gown and H. Stern's diamond jewels.

After a turbulent year on screen and behind the scenes, Ellen Pompeo is ready to give the mood on the set of Grey's Anatomy a clean bill of health.

Although, she admits, things have certainly changed with the departure of cast members Kate Walsh and Isaiah Washington.

"It does feel different," Pompeo said at the pre-Emmy party for Los Angeles Confidential magazine, which she's hosting.

"I love change. I think when one door opens or closes, another one opens. The seasons change and everything changes and I think change is good."

"It's good to turn over the dirt," she continued. "It feels nice and there's new beginnings for everybody and it feels great."

Kate Walsh now has her own spin-off, Private Practice, and Washington will appear on the new NBC show, Bionic Woman, during the same Wednesday, 9 p.m. time slot. Isaiah is also in talks to star in his own series for the network beginning next fall.

"They're missed, of course," Ellen Pompeo said. "But I'm also very happy and very hopeful for their new beginnings. You know, they're both taking on whole new chapters in their careers, which I think is really exciting for them. So, to sort of think about how it affects us is rather selfish. We just have to hope that their new endeavors are as successful, and I just wish them the best."

Ellen Pompeo's feelings were seconded by her friend and Grey's Emmy-nominated co-star, T.R. Knight.

"It's been going really well," he said Sunday at a party celebrating the Emmy nominated TV producers, including Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes.

Though T.R. Knight said he's excited to be working new cast member Chyler Leigh, he is missing his pal Kate Walsh.

"I just went to her wedding this weekend, and so luckily, we'll still see her, but what she brought to the show and on the set with her sense of humor, we will miss her a lot," T.R. Knight said.

Ellen Pompeo was joined at the L.A. Confidential party by her fiancé, music producer Chris Ivery. The actress said she and Ivery aren't in the midst of any wedding plans, and don't expect to have a traditional ceremony.

"To me a wedding is a piece of paper," she said.

"I don't think it's going to change how we feel about each other. Every day is like a wedding when I wake up next to him. We just have something so special. I don't need a big dress or 400 there to declare my love. I think we declare it every day to each other. So that's just our way. Different for different people."

The wonderful Ellen Pompeo, who graces the cover of the latest edition of Los Angeles-based Confidential Magazine, hosted the annual pre-Emmy party in Hollywood last night, sponsored by the publication.
