Three Grey's Anatomy Stars Up For People's Choice Awards

No red carpet. No fawning hosts. No celebrities. No gowns. No hairdos. No fashion faux pas. What kind of awards show is this?

"The 34th Annual People's Choice Awards" arrives at 9 p.m. tonight on CBS crippled by the writers' strike, now in its ninth week.

While the Critics' Choice Awards were staged free of picketing writers, the Golden Globes and People's Choice Awards have had to make adjustments because the celebrities are reluctant to cross picket lines.

Both awards presentations are thus switching to a newsier approach. The People's Choice scrapped its usual live show early on and promises a star-studded news magazine-style telecast tonight on CBS at 9 p.m.

Queen Latifah will lead viewers through segments shot by production teams. She doesn't interact directly with winners, she told USA Today: "I'm wacky enough to make it work. I had to tap back into my hip-hop to freestyle it."

The crystal statuettes were taken to winners at locations including Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, London and the USO tour in Kabul.

Grey's Anatomy Earns SAG Award Nomination

Already earning a nomination for next month's Golden Globes, Grey's Anatomy has been nominated for Best Drama Ensemble by the Screen Actors Guild. The awards will be handed out at a ceremony January 27 in Los Angeles, California.

Grey's Anatomy Cast

Unfortunately, none of our favorite Grey's Anatomy cast members received nominations for the individual awards (we personally believe Ellen Pompeo was the biggest omission) this time around. But we digress. Follow the jump for the full list of nominations ...

Ellen Pompeo Wins Golden Satellite Award

Just a quick note to inform fans of Ellen Pompeo that the Grey's Anatomy star won the International Press Academy Golden Satellite Award for best actress in a drama series in Los Angeles last night! Go Ellen! See the list of winners here.

The Best Actress

Ellen Pompeo was honored for her work on Grey's Anatomy.

While other Grey's Anatomy cast members may dominate headlines, it's nice to see Ellen Pompeo recognized for her continuous great work as Meredith Grey. We're enormous fans of this Boston-bred actress on a personal level, as well.

It's certainly been an eventful year for the star. Pompeo celebrated her 38th birthday last month by getting married privately to longtime boyfriend / fiance Chris Ivery.

Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl Earn Golden Globe Nods

The nominations for the 65th annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be presented on January 13, have officially been announced, and Grey's Anatomy is up for Best TV Drama against Big Love, Damages, House, Mad Men and The Tudors!

Also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress (Drama) category is Katherine Heigl, who continues to earn accolades for her portrayal of Dr. Izzie Stevens.

Heigl, Katherine

The talented Katherine Heigl is in the running for a Golden Globe Award.

Katherine Heigl has already said she will not be on hand at the ceremony if the writers' strike persists, telling Entertainment Tonight: "I'm not crossing the picket line unless I'm contractually obliged to do so. And I'm not with the Golden Globes."

Who Will Win Best Supporting Actress Honors?

Who will take home the Emmy Awards Sunday night?

That remains to be seen, but in the opinion of Entertainment Weekly, the award for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series - which boasts three Grey's Anatomy stars in contention - belongs in the hands of only one woman...

Sandra Oh: The Critics

Despite the consistent strength of Chandra Wilson and emergence of Katherine Heigl, the subtle brilliance of Sandra Oh deserves the prize over both - and the other three competitors - in the eyes of this magazine. What do you think?

Incidentally, Grey's Anatomy is also up for Best Drama Series, with T.R. Knight nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

We will be pulling for all our favorite stars - and scratching our heads as to why Ellen Pompeo isn't nominated for anything. What gives?

Sizing Up Emmy Chances For Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson

The lovely ladies of Grey's Anatomy dominate the supporting actress in a drama category for this year's Emmys, and it'd be far from a stretch to say at least two of them - Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh - rose to new heights last season, Variety opines.

Heigl's Izzie Stevens began the year dealing with the death of fiance Denny by baking muffins, and ended it by having an affair with a married man - her best friend, George O'Malley.

Sandra Oh endured a tumultuous relationship and was left standing at the altar as Isaiah Washington's Preston Burke said goodbye to her, seeing her trepidation at spending a life together.

Chandra Wilson: Emmy Favorite? Also on Grey's Anatomy, but in a more subdued - though by no means less well-executed - role, was nominee Chandra Wilson, whose classy Dr. Bailey, try as she might, aims to lessen the hysteria that always seems to permeate the halls of Seattle Grace.

As for their competition? Aida Turturro was only in a handful of Sopranos episodes these past few months, but even in limited scenes, she had the ability to not only raise the ire of brother Tony, but of watchers who can see through her scheming ways. She did all that with fewer scenes than most of her castmates, too.

Australia's Rachel Griffiths seamlessly flowed from Six Feet Under to Brothers & Sisters, moving from scattered Brenda Chenowith to solid citizen Sarah Whedon, who does her best to keep the family business - and her own troubled marriage - afloat.

Will Grey's Anatomy Win Best Drama?

Award-Winning ShondaCan Grey's Anatomy off The Sopranos in the heated battle for Best Drama at the Emmys? According to The Envelope, the L.A. Times awards blog, the medical drama is way ahead in fan support. But it will likely be a fight to the finish.

Some believe Heroes might do it by tapping the same factors that boosted Lost to a recent victory under the new voting process. Both = hot ensemble shows with fantasy elements, huge ratings and major buzz.

But Grey's Anatomy really does best fit the pattern of Emmy champs. Voters love medical shows, yes (E.R. won best drama; Chicago Hope and St. Elsewhere won top acting kudos).

But medicine really isn't the key ingredient in a prescription for victory. This is: ensemble "workplace programs" that feel important, plus snob appeal.

Elitist voters will sometimes embrace lowly dees-and-dems cops if the shows have cache (NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues). Of course, attorneys get winning verdicts all the time (The Practice, L.A. Law). Cops and lawyers together, too (Law & Order). Snooty liberal politics (The West Wing) have a shot, as do upscale mafiosos (The Sopranos).

This year's nominee House is about medicine, but it may be too character specific. Programs largely focused on one role win acting trophies all the time (The Shield, Columbo, Medium), but seldom prevail in series races.

Boston Legal fits this formula, and would've had a good chance under the voting process in place before 2000, but can probably be discounted now.

Heroes fits the formula even though it's not, like Lost, in a "workplace," so to speak. However, it spotlights a team working together. That's what counts!

Grey's Anatomy fits the formula perfectly, of course, has other pluses. A stylish show about life and death feels all the more urgent because it's been in the headlines recently (thank you, Isaiah Washington).

And it can benefit from the Emmy phenom of delayed recognition.

On rare occasions, voters jump on the bandwagon right away (Lost, West Wing), but they usually make programs wait a year, two or three.

With Sopranos off the air and recent champs Lost and 24 out of this category, a good, logical case can be made for Grey's being the next winner of best drama - even after what many consider to be a sub-par Season 3.

Grey's Anatomy Gets Emmy Nod For Best Drama; Four Stars Also Nominated

Cristina Yang On Her Wedding DayWe're pleased to report that Grey's Anatomy is in the race for top TV drama at the 59th annual Emmy Awards, with four stars (T.R. Knight, Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson and Katherine Heigl) scoring supporting acting nods.

Up for best drama series, besides Grey's Anatomy, are Boston Legal, Heroes, House and The Sopranos, which ended its run with 15 nominations, including two for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco.

In the race for Outstanding Comedy Series, the nominees are Entourage, The Office, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men and Ugly Betty, which followed The Sopranos in total nominations with 11.

The top nominee is HBO's TV movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, with 17. Surprises included Lost getting shut out for outstanding drama, and critically acclaimed freshman drama Friday Night Lights being blanked from several acting categories.

T.R. Knight Presents Katherine Heigl With "Superstar of Tomorrow" Award

BFFsThey're definitely best friends, whether they're portraying interns at Seattle Grace or hanging out in real life (or bringing each other the occasional new puppy).

So it's only fitting that T.R. Knight presented Katherine Heigl with the "Superstar of Tomorrow" award at Movieline's Young Hollywood Awards this past Sunday.

This is possibly the cutest picture of the two of them ever. We're always glad to see Grey's Anatomy stars recognized for their accomplishments, and think it's even better when they can present them to one another.

Congratulations to Katherine!
