Grey’s Anatomy will bid farewell to 2009 later this season when the Seattle Grace staff celebrates Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s - all in one very special installment.
“We’re pretty excited,” show creator Shonda Rhimes tells TV Guide of the big Grey's Anatomy event. “We’ll be watching time pass as we take the audience into the new year.”
Sadly, this isn't to say all the news is warm, fuzzy and joyous.
From the sound of it, the Season Six drama shifts away from medical and professional drama and focuses instead on characters’ personal hopes, dreams and disappointments.
Over the holidays, “people feel like something magical or momentous should happen,” Rhimes explains, but certainly speaks the truth when she says “But often nothing does.”
Among other story lines, we'll be seeing how Bailey became Bailey.
In the episode, we will meet Miranda Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) mother, whom Rhimes describes as “more Bailey than Bailey. You’ll finally see where Bailey gets her stuff.”
In between unwrapping gifts, Mark and Lexie’s happiness will be rocked by the arrival of a character from his past who Rhimes says will cause them “to fall on hard times.”
Meanwhile, over on Grey’s Anatomy's sister show, Private Practice, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) will be getting a surprise visit from her dad, whom she calls “The Captain.”
He's played by Stephen Collins, while her mom, Bizzy, will be played by JoBeth Williams.
Over a three-episode arc, kicking off in mid-November, Rhimes says Addison will finally get to the bottom of some more of the redhead's “shocking family secrets.”
Well, it is the holidays, right?

I can't wait to find out more about Bailey - and Addie!! Both are great characters, and seeing their parents should be amazing. But I hope the characters (on both shows) aren't too depressed during the holidays - but then again, Shonda isn't known for her focus on optimism. We shall see.

I'm scared to know who this person from Mark's past is. I've heard so many things. I love Mark and Lexie and I can stand angst but not to the extent where it breaks up a couple and never puts them back together. I'd be seriously disappointed.

I want to see as shonda shows thankgiving,Christmas and last year of our characters.When shonda speaks to seem very happy but you remain an stupid when then you go to see it and it isn't liked...So i don't believe to shonda's optimism...i 'll want to see great tables with many happy people but this is impossible.I hope to see Alex and IZZIE come back together...Owen understading Cri...MERDER to spent the holydays christmas with all family togheter sheperd-grey naturally even mark and lexie and Callie and Arizona go Torres's family , Bailey's mother more Bailey than Bailey...i seem a beautiful dream all in one...i don't wait to see it

I agree 100 % with deme here!! I want to see that too. I hope they show us some MerDer cutness/hotness [that would make my episode!!] especially Christmas is for being with the people you love, during the holidays and I hope Izzie/Alex will get back together. That will be both couples's first thankgiving,Christmas and New Years as a married couple!! And also want to see some Mer/Lexie sisterly during the holidays.. that would be so awesome!! I love them together, I hope Shonda let them have more screen time together!
Can't wait to learn more about Bailey and about her mother!!
And about Mark, who might be?! Maybe an ex?! I bet he had alot of them!! I hope whatever it is they will work it out. They become my favourite couple after Meredith and Derek!!

How can you say everyone hates Mexie when someone has qute clearly said they don't want Mexie to split?
And bad news for Alex/Izzie hater - Shonda said on her twitter last week that Alex and Izzie and "meant for each other". I'm pleased cos I love them :D

Cause Izzie is gone for a while now, Alex is broken the Merder Relationship and Mexie is the only hope for me and now?!
