The Writer's Perspective on "Give Peace a Chance"

Pete Nowalk, the head writer on "Give Peace a Chance," shared some thoughts on last night's terrific episode of Grey's Anatomy on the show's official writers' blog.

Below are some excerpts from Pete's column, with a link at the bottom to the full entry ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do surgeons really wear diapers? Well, depends who you ask.
Either way, it wasn’t that big of a leap for us to go diaper. Our doctors are hard core by nature. Combine that with the threat they're feeling from the Mercy West residents and you can understand while they'll do anything to win.
As Lexie tells Jackson, if she needs to pee in a diaper to help Derek get through his impossible surgery, she'll pee in a diaper. Which of course just drove Cristina crazy jealous.
Cristina was a shoe-in to win that pen-in-a-cup contest...but then she choked. Happens to the best of us. That left Owen having to cope with the fact that his girlfriend was fiending to put on a diaper. Admittedly, it's not the sexiest thing to picture.
But I think it speaks to Owen's overall good nature that he found a way to be okay with it, even gifting Cristina her very own marathon surgery to cheer her up.
And then, when Derek thwarted that plan, he went as far as to sexily teach Cristina the right way to work the microscope. You gotta admit, the dude's a pretty awesome boyfriend.
Speaking of awesome boyfriend...  I'm sorry, I mean awesome husband...
Derek Shepherd.
This episode felt different. As you've probably noticed, we’re trying to experiment more this season. And that’s probably uncomfortable for some of you. It was for me.
Banding Together
Derek gets some encouragement from his doctor, Lexie Grey.
In retrospect I’m really glad we told this story this way. As Derek says in the voiceover, what drew him to surgery was the quiet. The deep, intense, long-ass focus it requires.
And this episode really reflects that. It’s quieter than a typical episode. More single-minded. Derek is our sole focus. And really, what an amazing character to spend an episode with.
Watch Patrick Dempsey on your screen and you can’t help but be struck by how much he says without saying anything. The guy can pretty much give you an entire soliloquy with one look.
That’s a rare talent, and we really wanted to use that to our advantage.
It also seemed like the perfect time to do our Derek-focused episode since we had little time to shoot with Ellen Pompeo (8 1/2 months pregnant at the time we shot this one).
Typically, if Derek's doing a once-in-a-lifetime surgery, Meredith would be at his side. But since we couldn't physically do that, we had her be there for him in a different way.
There's still no sign of Izzie. She's still god knows where and not telling Alex squat. Which is just harsh. Sure, the guy tried to pretend that he didn’t care whether she’d show up for her IL-2 treatment, but we all know that's just his way of coping.
Who doesn’t show up for their life-saving IL-2 treatment?
Last but not least, I'd like to applaud Chandra Wilson. She acts, she sings, and now she directs... and sometimes all at the same time. I have a feeling Chandra’s the kind of person that’s good at everything she does. You know the type from high school.
Grey's Anatomy Episode Guide: "Give Peace a Chance"
Last night saw Derek defy the surgical odds and the Chief of Surgery and not only come out victorious, but with a Zen-like mentality and peace that was inspiring to us all.
When the hospital's lab tech, Isaac, tells Derek he has the mother of all spinal tumors and wants him to operate, McDreamy doesn't know if he can. Fortunately, Isaac does.
Isaac has full confidence, even after Derek opens him up for 10 hours the first time and doesn't do a darn thing. You'll get it the next day, Isaac says, and Derek pulls it off.
Directed by Chandra Wilson, the episode revolved around only this story, with other characters and plots on the periphery, but still brilliantly done. Can someone say Emmy?
For the complete rundown, check out our episode recap of "Give Peace a Chance."
Operating Procedure
Dehydrated and stressed but Zen, Derek is determined not to lose this fight.
Private Practice Episode Guide: "Strange Bedfellows"
Last night on Private Practice, Violet's attacker, Katie Kent was on trial.
Violet couldn't bring herself to testify at first. Then when she was ready to, a plea from Katie herself made her second-guess her intentions regarding the crazy woman.
After tearing her a new one in private, a composed Violet tells the court that, in her expert opinion, Katie was temporarily insane. As a result, she'll likely avoid prison.
Pete was not pleased, and Violet realized only then that he is a victim in all this too. He begs her to come back to him and Lucas. We really hope that she agrees to!
Elsewhere, Charlotte joins the practice with a specialty that Cooper has a real issue with. Also in a flashback from last season, the swapped unborn babies return.
Addison has to operate on one of them, and the consequences are tragic.
What Did You Think of "Give Peace a Chance"?
Tonight's episode featured McDreamy, front and center, fighting multiple battles. And the Chandra Wilson-directed masterpiece was probably the best one of the year so far.
It was certainly compelling to watch him battle so hard to save Isaac - and continue squaring off with the embattled Richard, raising the stakes higher than ever this time.
Discuss "Give Peace a Chance" in our Grey's Anatomy Forum!
Tonight's Grey's Anatomy, "Give Peace a Chance," is all about Derek. Which we imagine will prove quite popular. But our man is certainly under the gun from the beginning.
When he learns that a Seattle Grace employee has a near-fatal tumor, Derek wants to operate anyway, to do whatever he can. Richard, of course, is standing in the way.
In essence, McDreamy is fighting two battles tonight, the first to save lab tech Isaac's life, despite the very long odds, and the other against the Chief's dwindling authority.
Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Mark's Mystery Woman
We've hinted for some time at a rough patch on the way for Mark and Lexie. But here's another piece of the puzzle courtesy of Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly.
See what you make of this item ...
Q: I love Grey’s Anatomy but what’s this I hear about trouble on the horizon for Mark and Lexie? Who is this supposed mystery woman from Mark’s past?
A: From what I've gathered thus far, I believe she hails from Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and has McSteamy DNA coursing through her veins.
Thoughts? Theories? Share!
Patrick Dempsey Juggles on Good Morning America
Is there anything the man can't do? Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, a hunk of many talents, showed off his juggling skills on ABC's Good Morning America Wednesday.
The Maine native once aspired to be a circus performer in his youth (he's admitted as much), so it's little surprise that he can pull this off, but still, you've gotta love him ...
Grey's Anatomy Set Becoming Baby Central
According to TV Guide Magazine, the set of Grey's Anatomy is becoming quite the family atmosphere. To a point, this goes without saying, given all the recent baby news.
However, producers are reportedly constructing an on-set nursery to accommodate Ellen Pompeo’s 6-week-old Stella, Katherine Heigl’s 1-year-old adopted Naleigh, Chyler Leigh’s 6-month-old  Anniston, and the baby Eric Dane is expecting with wife Rebecca Gayheart.
All those bundles sure make for a happy Grey's Anatomy set.
After the past few years, that sure is a nice thing to hear!
“Ellen is absolutely loving life as a mom and Katie just came back on set with Naleigh, who is absolutely beautiful and precious!,” reports her on-screen sister, Chyler Leigh.
“The babies haven’t met yet, but I’ve heard talks of a nursery coming. For now our trailers have been converted into baby havens. I have been passing on my experience.”
Leigh, while only 27, now has three kids with hubby Nathan West. The recent arrivals were the first for Pompeo and Heigl, and Eric Dane will be welcoming his first as well.
Chyler Leigh and Noah
Grey's Anatomy star Chyler Leigh with adorable son Noah.
But what about plans for the stork to pay a visit to Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital? Show creator Shonda Rhimes says, disappointingly, “We don’t do babies on Grey’s.”
Aww. Does that really mean no McBaby? Ever?
“I assume Derek wants to be a dad at some point,” says Rhimes, clarifying that Meredith, on the other hand, is probably “not too into babies.” Well, just give it time, right?
In the meantime, what about a mini-Calzona?
Jessica Capshaw, who plays Dr. Arizona Robbins and is the real-life mother of Luke, 2, says, “In my character research, I found a lot of real life pediatric doctors don’t want to have their own children because everyday they see all the horrible things that could happen.”
So maybe not. At least not for awhile.
We can also rule out former cast-member T.R. Knight (George), 36, who just broke things off with his boyfriend, Mark Cornelson, just weeks after the kid was legally able to toast his 21st birthday. Someone pass poor Mark a pacifier of his own!
