Grey's Anatomy returns for its sixth season with a two-hour event Thursday, September 24, on ABC. Below is the network's official synopsis of the Season 6 premiere.
Technically, the event is listed as two separate episodes, both written by Krista Vernoff and featuring Jessica Capshaw as an official cast member for the first time.
The first episode, entitled "Good Mourning," will air at 9 p.m.
The hospital staff is left to deal with the aftermath of George's passing. Hitting the staff hard, they all find unique ways to get through the various stages of grief.
George's mom returns, faced with the difficult task of deciding what to do with his organs.
The second episode, entitled "Goodbye," follows at 10 p.m.
As this episode begins, time has passed. Everyone at Seattle Grace Hospital is struggling after losing one of their own and are turning to any distraction they can find.
Meredith and Derek are consummating their marriage anywhere and everywhere, while Cristina and Owen have been instructed to abstain from sex by Dr. Wyatt.
Guest stars for "Good Mourning" are Shannon Lucio as Amanda (the woman George saved at the end of last season), Debra Monk as Mrs. O'Malley, Martha Plimpton as Pam, Mitch Pileggi as Larry Jennings, Zoe Boyle as Clara and Zack Shada as Andy.
Grey's Anatomy guest stars for "Goodbye" include Amy Madigan as Dr. Wyatt, Adam Lazarre White as an Oncology Resident, Lucio, Plimpton, Pileggi, Boyle and Shada.
"Good Mourning" was written by Krista Vernoff and directed by Ed Ornelas.
"Goodbye" was also written by Vernoff but directed by Bill D'Elia.

I just had the weirdest thought. Remember in Season 2 when Izzie said that she laughs at funerals....I wonder if she would laugh at George's...Just a thought. why does it seem like it is taking SO long for the 24th to get here. I AM SO EXCITED!!!! Atleast season 5 is almost released!!

I am so excited for next season!! I know they've used the whole "The season that changes everything" line for last season but I think it would be true for this season too...'cause they're adding new doctors as well (that's why Heigl can take a break for a movie). It's ER-like or something, I'm so excited and I'm looking forward to some MerDer action...I hope Ellen Pompeo won't be gone long.

Kristen: I don't think so. I have the same problem I laugh at funerals too. But It was funerals of people that I barely knew or they wasn't my love ones. But when my grandmother died..it was totally different situation

Cristina and Owen are going to be hilarious.
I love how Meredith and Cristina are going to have the same reaction, but only Meredith will be able to follow through haha.

Kristen and Jelly..there are already some promo pics, where you can see izzie sort of breaking down, sitting on the ground and cry her eyes out..so i guess she will not be laughing at all..

This is going to be super sad and intense - not sure if that's the perfect mood to begin Season 6 with, but I can understand why it is being done. I'm really going to miss George - and Izzie crying is going to be really upsetting. But that's the point. Cannot wait for September 24th!!!!
