Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: How the Cliffhanger Came About

These excerpts from Michael Ausiello's spoiler Q&A at EW.com today are not really Grey's Anatomy spoilers. They are, however, quite interesting in that they relate to the climactic scene of Season Five and how that came about. See below ...

Q: Any Grey's Anatomy scoop?

A: Remember the haunting image of an Army-clad George waiting outside the elevator for Izzie in the season finale? Well, it wasn't supposed to be George standing there. The scene was originally shot with Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Denny in the role of Izzie's heavenly escort.

But as Grey's boss Shonda Rhimes explains, "I received the first cut [of the finale] on a Friday and something didn't feel right. All weekend long something was bugging me."

"And then I woke up Monday morning and it hit me, 'My God, it's George! When the elevator opens, it should be George O'Malley that we see.'"

There was just one problem ... actually, two problems. To find out what they were and how they got resolved, the new Entertainment Weekly issue has the details.

Izzie in the Afterlife?

Q: How much longer do we have to wait for Grey's Anatomy scoop?

A: One of the two problems involved Katherine Heigl's location at the time of Shonda's epiphany. That's all you're getting. You have to pick up the magazine.

Q: Anything on Grey's Anatomy?

A: The other problem involved what T.R. Knight did to his head after production wrapped. Now I'm really done.

Q: Please give us something on Grey's Anatomy?

A: The second problem involving T.R. Knight's head eventually became the solution. Okay, now I'm really really done. Get the rest of the scoop in this week's EW!

And let the Anti-Shonda, let's blame Shonda, oh I hate Shonda posts begin... ugh.

I will be thoroughly surprised if a non-anti-shonda post makes it here. Seriously, it's like a powder-keg for you people.

  2. Ace Says:

    For example....

    "Shonda, I hate you"

"Shonda, you're just making crap up to make yourself look good."

"Shonda, you killed George, don't make it seem like you didn't."

"Shonda, you killed George cause you hated TR.. AND George, AND you're still pissed because ABC had to fire your BFF, Isiash Washington."

    "Shonda, I'll never forgive you."

    "Oh please Shonda, you liar."

"She's so full of it! Shonda you're horrible."

"I'm SOOO done with GA, let it burn and fall!! Gizzie FOREVER!"

    That about cover it??

  3. Ada Says:

I have said what I wanted to say about George and the situation. I have no desire to say it again.

Fans have the right to say what they want though, and you don't have the right to mock someone for expressing their opinions.

What are you? Shonda's boyguard or protector?

  4. dodo_daniel Says:

So finally everything makes sense..just took me a little while to figure it out.

Shonda said that 5x01 had a clue for the season finale. And at the end of episode one when izzie got off the elevator and saw denny going into the white light heaven this was meant to be the same in the finale..

just that george was there instead..hence it was clear that george was dead in the finale..and izzie had a decision to make..basically stay on the elevator or you will die..

    clever..:)

  5. redpepper Says:

It was pretty predictable. Everyone guessed George was dead and Izzie was not yet dead. It was a pretty lame cliffhanger when everyone had guessed Izzie was alive, and George dead.

It showed at least that George and Izzie had an unbreakable connection and were soulmates, which I always knew.

  6. mandy Says:

redpepper, I don't think it shows they are soudmates or anything. Meredith met quite a few dead guys when she almost died and they were not their souldmates. I think it just shows George died and Izzie almost did, but her frieds kept her alive, her friends kept her in the elevator, that's why she can even hear them.
I think that image of George was one of the best things of the SF, and now it results it was a coincidence! Because he has cut his hair so he looked like a soldier. Oh well, it doesn'tmatter, what matter is the final result, and it was great.

  7. Nikki Says:

To me, George and Izzie are soulmates. Their souls connected as they were dying.

I would have thought they were soulmates without that scene anyway. I have thought that from day 1.

  8. Allie Says:

I'm pretty sure the problem with his head is that he cut his hair, but it works out perfectly cause they put him in a uniform.

  9. Bella Says:

George looked so handsome in his uniform. I always thought he was good-looking but he was hot in that scene,

I want to cry when I see him knowing he's dead though. I love my George.

Gizzie looked like a gorgeous couple like that.

  10. sarah Says:

So she would not give a last scene with George?. I think she just has to stop talking,is only making the things worse. Nobody believes her anymore.
    Sorry for my English.
