Katherine Heigl Will Vie For Emmy This Year

After a firestorm of controversy erupted around Katherine Heigl's decision to remove herself from Emmy Awards consideration in 2008, citing a lack of exceptional material, the Grey's Anatomy heroine and lightning rod has reentered the derby this year, EW reports.

Heigl critics may claim that the 2007 Outstanding Supporting Actress winner is back in the race because of tensions that allegedly sprung up between her and series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes after she took herself out of the running in '08.

The budding movie starlet (27 Dresses, Knocked Up, The Ugly Truth), fans may recall, said at the time that she didn't have material with which she could compete.

Katherine Heigl: Leaving?

But some believe it's likelier that Katherine knows, whether viewers loved or loathed the Izzie-brain tumor story, that she did a heck of a job with her character.

Katherine Heigl has already earned one high-profile endorsement - Rhimes'.

"I think she did beautiful work," Rhimes raved in an interview last week, immediately following the season finale. "I think she always does beautiful work."

Besides, if it turns out Izzie did take the Seattle Grace elevator straight up to heaven, a second Emmy in three years would make a lovely parting gift, no?

I think she is way overrated. When she won her Emmy in 2007, Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson totally deserved it more than her. I think they're way better actors and they should both get an Emmy this year. Too bad it's not possible, cause they'd be nominated in the same category.

I think that nearly every actor on Grey's did Emmy worthy stuff this year! Katherine Heigl WAS amazing as Izzie. "What a Difference a Day Makes" - I was crying as the episode started because she caught me off guard all sick and dying in front of me when last we saw her we were hopeful she would beat this thing. She was SO believable that it brought me to tears to look at her so deteriorated. I think that Ellen Pompeo's performance outside the prison after William's execution was Emmy Worthy. I think Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh both also had Emmy moments (Cristina being strangled comes to mind as one, she nailed the emotions of that scenario beautifully, as she does all the time). Patrick Dempsey showing Derek's dark side, Justin Chambers with his emotional outpouring over Izzie's illness. They are all great and I will support any of our Grey's actors who get nominated. I really hope we see Katherine and TR Knight back at Grey's next season. The show would lose a lot without them, regardless of whether you love or hate their characters.

Marriedmymcdreamy.....I totally agree with you. Why just Katherine Heigl when they ALL did such an amazing job this season. EVERY ONE OF THEM!! Ellen (my personal favorite) is ALWAYS good and Patrick's dark side definitely deserves an Emmy. Who votes for this stuff anyways? I think the fans should vote.

I agree with the fact that everybody did an outstanding job, but somehow KH is the only one who can make me cry. Maybe it's the story, maybe it's the way she act's. Anyway I think she deserves an Emmy.

Ellen Pompeo made me cry outside of the jail after the execution, but yes, most of the time I cry watching Grey's, which is the only tv I cry over, it is usually Katherine Heigl. Say what you will about her being demanding or not thinking before speaking, but she IS really good.

No surprise there. Chandra deserves that Emmy. If she doesn't win (which I seriously doubt) then Sandra should have it. They did phenomenal this season and it's about time it gets recognized.

I think that everyone did a better job than her this year. Ellen was flawless and consistant. I think that she did really good, especially with the serial killer arc. So did Patrick by showing Derek's dark side. THAT was good acting. Justin also was great. He did incredible.

I'd be seriously shocked if none of them recieve Emmy noms.

@McLoveGA - The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (these guys are the ones that give the Primetime Emmy Awards where Grey's can be up for) sends the ballots to the members to list the nominees. Usually they can come up with up to 10 actors (last year both Ellen and Patrick were in the top 10 in Leading Actor/Actress in a Drama Series but they didn't make the final cut) and then must submit them to the Academy. After that, the Top 5, except in lead actor/actress for Drama and Comedy as well as Comedy and Drama Series, that can be up to 6 nominees. Once decided, the nominees are anounced in a ceremony (this year it's going to be on July 16th) and the ballots are send again to the members of the Academy to vote. Then the numbers are counted and the winner is announced the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20th (mark calendars).

Sorry for the long rant but this should answer your question :)

Wow....thanks anuflas. I will be shocked also if none of them are nominated.

I hope Sandra Oh wins the Emmy this year. She has done an amazing work during all season. She has made me cry, laugh, feel Cristina's pain, also feel her happiness... she is amazing.

ELLEN POMPEO FOR A WELL-DESERVED EMMY!

I'm with you all the way....Ellen Pompeo lovers unite!
