On the heels of Tyne Daly paying Seattle a visit as Derek Shepherd's mother, Carolyn, Grey's Anatomy fans can get ready to meet another main character's mom.
Sharon Lawrence, who is best known for her run on NYPD Blue and who most recently played parent to Privileged's JoAnna Garcia, has been tapped to guest-star as Izzie Stevens' mother, TVGuide.com reports today. Izzie's background is still mostly a mystery.
Grey's Anatomy is winding down its fifth season just as Katherine Heigl's character, freshly diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, is coming to terms with her mortality.
Lawrence will appear in a late-April episode. What brings Izzie's mom to town? What sort of relationship do you think they have? Sound off in the comments below!

i don't know?! i think that her mommy will be there when Izzie spills all the dieing stuff to everyone elce or actualy dies! hopefully not though!

I remember in a season 1 episode it was something like, Izzie never really spoke to her mum anymore but she spoke to her on the phone at the end of the episode.

WHEN DID SHE TALK TO HER MOM??
SHE DOESNT HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH HER.. THIS CANT BE GOOD, SHE PROBABLY COMES WHEN IZZIE HAS THE SURGERY... MAYBE CHRISTINA CALLS HER. OR TELLS IZZIE TO CALL HER.

Izzie spoke to her mom in Season I......in the episode with the psychic guy. She was trying to remember the ingredients in her cupcakes (it was coconut extract, I think), and she called her mom and said, "Hi Mom, it's me, Cricket". That was right before the scene when Derek takes Meredith to his property for the first time and he tells her all those little things about him (one of my all-time favorite Mer-Der scenes!)

Izzie's Mom... interesting. Obviously she's coming b/c Izzie's sick. But what will she be like?? This is pretty much uncharted territory... all we know is that Izzie grew up in a trailer park, she doesn't talk to her much and that Izzie got pregnant in HS. I bet her Mom was young when she had her too. I bet she's the controlling type. But that's a total guess.
This is gonna be good, I think!!!

I'm not surprised they'd bring her mom on. She has a mother.. and she's sick with cancer.. of course she'd call her mom or her boyfriend/friends would call her. They have never mentioned her father, have they?
Can't wait to see what happens! Izzie is fantastic and means alot to the show.. I still say, if she's leaving, don't kill her off. She can always make reappearances (like Addison) :)

From past seasons, it sounds like Izzie's mom was a single mom, they lived in a trailer park, and were probably pretty poor. Her mom probably had a hard life growing up and Izzie had to put herself through college and med school so her relationship is strained, but re the cupcake episode, she still loves her (her mom's pet name for her was Cricket, cute) and even when growing up is tough, when the time comes, we all need our mothers! Love Sharon Lawrence--can't wait for this episode. Go Grey's, you always get the best guest stars.
