The Writers' Take on "Stand By Me"

Zoanne Clack, the Grey's Anatomy writer who authored last night's episode, have posted some of her thoughts on "Stand By Me" on the show's official writers' blog. Below are some excerpts, with a link to the full column at the bottom ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! Meredith Grey takes back the night!
I mean this literally (she’s getting back her man) and figuratively (using the reference of women empowering themselves because as I’m sure you know, March is Women’s History Month – catch the nearest parade in your city). Derek says, “I love you” and Mer answers, “I know” ... anybody remember that from somewhere else? Come on, let your geek flow.
The writers here at Grey’s Anatomy have no problems letting our geek flow. We like to think of it as being “geek chic” and we welcome you to join us.  But it’s not just the writers actually, everybody embraces their inner geek here. The editor of this episode, Susan Vaill, emailed me all excited that we’d put it in and taken this exchange back for the ladies.
Okay, some of you may already know what I’m talking about whilst others of you are completely lost. Anybody see a little movie called The Empire Strikes Back? Princess Leia says, “I love you” to Han Solo right before he’s about to be frozen in carbonite (another reference we’ve used before… episode 416 ... season 4 finale ... cement boy ... ring any bells?) and Han Solo says, “I know.”
A Smiling MerLeia
He kind of says it in an “of course you do, look at me” kind of way. So now, we’ve taken back that exchange and handed it over to the women. And we’ve made it both feminist and feminine at the same time I’d like to think.  Feminist because Mer’s all “I’m woman, hear me roar” because she’s all that and of course he still loves her always.
Feminine at the same time because he’s vulnerable, and she’s not taking advantage of that moment, and she loves him, too.
She’s not giving up on him. She’s not giving up on their love and she’s not giving up on him as a surgeon. She’s standing by her principles and standing by her man.
Speaking of not giving up, is Cristina a freakin’ sledgehammer or what? She just keeps pounding Izzie and pounding her until Izzie finally has to lash out and speak the unspeakable. Not having treatment? Why would she ever even go there?
Discuss "Stand By Me" in our Grey's Anatomy Forum!
Tonight, Grey's Anatomy returns with an all-new episode (its 18th of the season), "Stand By Me." Check out the spoilers and previews posted earlier today for a primer!
Izzie Stevens' ailment is hard to keep secret, especially when the one person who knows is Cristina. Speaking of Yang, she is about to attempt her first solo surgery.
Oh, and there's the McDreamy matter. He's off in the woods, unable to find it within himself to return to work. He's fallen apart. Can anyone put him back together?
We can't wait to find out, and hear what you have to say about everything.
As always, you can discuss "Stand By Me" before, during and after the episode in our Grey's Anatomy forum, and/or by leaving comments on any of the articles on this site.
Thanks for making this the web's #1 Grey's Anatomy community!
Grey's Anatomy Spoilers For Next Two Episodes
With an all-new Grey's Anatomy on tap tonight and another next week, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello seeks to whet our collective appetites with these spoilers.
Will Derek ever pop the question - and when, and where? Will Cristina be hurt by Owen? And how long will Izzie's condition be kept under wraps? Let's get to it, shall we ...
Q: What is up with this supposed marriage that will take place at the end of the season on Grey's Anatomy? I'm assuming that a Meredith and Derek wedding would be too rushed.
Roommates, Lovers ...
A: You know what they say about people who assume: They make an a out of ss and ume. I hear Der will finally propose to Mer in the March 26 episode titled "Elevator Love Letter" (gee, I wonder where he pops the question?), so, assuming she accepts, that gives the happy couple about seven weeks to pull something together. That's more than enough time, no?
Q: This is my first time asking a question, so, for the sake of a newbie's sanity, could you please give a good Grey's Anatomy spoiler on Cristina and Owen?
Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Lexie and Mark
A little Grey's Anatomy spoiler item from TV Guide today ...
Q: The best part of Grey's Anatomy for me this season has been the sexy pairing of Lexie Grey and Mark "McSteamy" Sloan. What's ahead for the sizzling duo?
A: More sexy. More pairing. More sizzling. In other words, a source tells me you'll get more of the stuff you like as this dark-horse couple keep on keeping on, led in large part by Mark Sloan's full embrace of a committed relationship. The bigger question down the pike: Will they get to such a place that Lexie will introduce Mark to her returning father?
Exclusive Grey's Anatomy Scoop From Patrick Dempsey
His character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, certainly is going through some tough times.
In the video below, Patrick Dempsey chatted briefly with ABC about McDreamy's issues, as well as how he feels about the show's upcoming 100th episode (!) and where his character is headed next, whether he sees a marriage and baby (!!) in MerDer's future, and more ...
Katherine Heigl Has Her Hands Full
She's the picture of good health ... so to speak. Grey's Anatomy actress Katherine Heigl, whose character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, received a devastating diagnosis in last week's episode of the hit series, certainly had her hands full with something else as she ran errands in Beverly Hills ...
Sharon Lawrence to Play Izzie's Mom
On the heels of Tyne Daly paying Seattle a visit as Derek Shepherd's mother, Carolyn, Grey's Anatomy fans can get ready to meet another main character's mom.
Sharon Lawrence, who is best known for her run on NYPD Blue and who most recently played parent to Privileged's JoAnna Garcia, has been tapped to guest-star as Izzie Stevens' mother, TVGuide.com reports today. Izzie's background is still mostly a mystery.
Grey's Anatomy is winding down its fifth season just as Katherine Heigl's character, freshly diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, is coming to terms with her mortality.
Lawrence will appear in a late-April episode. What brings Izzie's mom to town? What sort of relationship do you think they have? Sound off in the comments below!
Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Big Week For Cristina
Kristin of E! Online has some scoop on this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, specifically regarding Drs. Yang and Hunt. Here's what she has to say ...
Q: It sounds like Cristina is going to have a difficult week this week on Grey's Anatomy. Is Owen going to be around to offer her a little support, or are we going to have to wait another week for any moments between these two?
A: Yep, Sandra Oh gets show off her superduper acting mojo this week, as previewed in the sneak preview of "Stand By Me" we posted Friday. She's the only keeper of Izzie's secret, which she has to deal with the exact same week she gets her first solo surgery. As for Owen, we'll get a preview of the future of their relationship based on how he handles this crisis with Cristina...
Just Your Standard Patrick Dempsey Photo
Looking sharp as always! His reeling Grey's Anatomy character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, may be a total basket case after his meltdown on last week's episode, but Patrick Dempsey still lives up to his McDreamy title, suiting up for a photo shoot in Los Angeles on Saturday...
