Grey's Anatomy writer Bill Harper, who penned last night's episode, has posted his thoughts on "Beat Your Heart Out" on the show's official writers' blog for the fans.
Below are some excerpts, with a link to the full column at the bottom ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I felt especially close to Derek as he spends the day trying to plan the perfect proposal. (Can we just take a second here to say DEREK’S GOING TO PROPOSE. Who would have thought that a drunken tussle on Ellis’s living room rug would lead to this? Not Meredith, I bet.)
And while Derek’s twisting himself inside out to keep this surprise for Meredith Grey, trying to find exactly the right way to do it, all of his efforts are actually backfiring, sending the wrong signals and sending her into a panic. Romance and Panic Attacks.
As this episode began taking shape in the writer’s room, it became clear that these two main factors that would be at work. Either people were experiencing one or the other, or one was leading directly to the other. Romance and Panic Attacks.
Which go together, I thought at the time, like peanut butter and clams.
Start with Cristina and Owen, who have maybe the most romantic day I’ve ever seen. Shonda was very interested in the hotness of the chasteness between these two. We had lots of discussions of the tortured sensuality of the Victorian Era, where a hand placed next to another’s hand could be so electric, so concentrated, that it was actually better than sex.
To go further, to consummate that kind of compressed excitement, would be to risk losing it. And I loved that in Seattle Grace, where people famously steal into on-call rooms between surgeries, these two were living a bodice-ripping romance novel under everyone’s noses. Cristina doesn’t even have words for what this is. So they choose to long for each other for a while. And it’s painful, but in that way that you sort of don’t want it to stop. It’s clear they’re both loving it.
Meanwhile, Mark and Lexie, at the height of romance, start to crumble under all the secrecy.
I think that this episode was so good, but I want to see all of them now!! LOL
It's pretty obvious what's going on with Izzie, ESPECIALLY with all of the spoilers out. She' not anemic, meaning they mixed the tests up. Izzie is the one with aneurysm, and I'm almost positive that in the preview for next weeks episode when Alex says, "Page, Shepard now!", I'm almost positive he is talking about Izzie. My guess is that she has a seizure, or something along those lines.....George is obviously suspicious, and I have a feeling that he may say something about the tests she was taking....I'm ready for this to all pan out....but Derek is gonna be so busy with Archer, so who will operate on Izzy?? AAAAhhh
Of course Derek didn't propose in this episode. Anyone who thought he would is crazy, they are going to drag that crap out as long as they can....maybe by the 3rd episode of the arc...It was so cute.
I was against Mark and Lexie, but I am really starting to grow to like them. Mark really has feelings for Lexie, it is apparent, and I think that scares him, aaaah I could go on and on but I am work...the most important thing is that Izzie DOES have a brain aneurysm, and the tests were mixed thats my vote and im sticking to it!!
I totally agree what you say about the tranquil moment between Owen and Christina. The background music is beautiful either, which made my eyes brimming.
There is a dialect here that calls hubby and wife as "holding hands",means walking together and leading by the husband. And an ancient Chinese saying also put:"holding one's hand and getting old together". We dont always have the mood, but a simple gesture, like holding hands, can express many. Gratitude, appreciation, adoration.........
Miss Ho is a talented actress. Actually they are all excellent in this show.And script writers are really amazing and I think the strike last time was worthwhile.
Meredith is beautiful and her voice.
Why I felt upset about this episode's ending?
MerDEr characters' are relly amazing.
Christina's and Owen's as well.
Mark doesn't grow well at all and the Lexie thing that you writers try to suggest is disgusting in many ways.
so, Mark is so superficial thaT after Addi and Callie who failed to make him mature cimes Lexie, the absolute nothing as character or anything else and makes him fall in love??
sorry, but it doesn't make sense to many of us that's why we don't watch the Mexie parts any more
I really liked this episode. I think there were a lot of elements that suggested the old Grey's; when they were interns and actually communicated with one another.
The Cristina and Owen parts were some of my favorites. It was hot in a less obvious way. And the Meredith and Derek scenes were great as well. I was happy when she made the baby comment; it makes me think that now she won't freak out when he proposes to her.
I really like Mark and Lexie together. I think that it shows Mark's character in a new light. It shows he's not just about sex; he can be about more, which he showed us a little bit with Addison before she left for L.A. I like the side of Mark that Lexie brings out. Addison and Callie never gave him a chance to seem mature; for the most part all they did was use him for sex. (Callie may seem him as more but I think Callie needs to deal with her own issues and be on her own for a change. Something she hasn't really been since George.)
Lexie actually respects him as person and expects more out of him. And it's about time someone did besides Derek. Plus I love that Mark gets more screen time, I was missing him last season. Now all we need is another towel season!
The Cristina and Owen parts were my favorites too. I don't think if Derek will ever propose to Mer, just like the chief never didi to her mom!!
He goes to LA while there is a mess with Izzie's sickness and he is needed and no one knows where he is... and Mer being freaked out.
He does the surgery on Archer, he dies, Derek feels bad and stays with Addison to calm her down... He looses Mer again.. This is too much... They are making if to ling and crappy!
Rima--
are you crazy?????
NO WAY!
#1 Derek loves Meredith WAY more passionately than he EVER loved Addie (and yes, I still believe he still loves Addie, but in a more sisterly or long-time friend kind of way)
#2 Addie is bringing Archer to Seattle to SGH-- TO DEREK.
#3 If Der went to LA and didn't come back, then Patrick Dempsey would no longer be on Greys and then he'd be on Private Practice and if that was gonna happen, the spoilers and gossip about that would be plastered everywhere!!!
NO WAY!
i 99% agree with kristen, after the spoilers being izzie is NOT anemic, she obviously has what the other lady had. dumb ass sadie! but i have a feeling this will be part of sadies exit as well next week. anyone else?
February 7th, 2009 2:37 PM
Definitely sets up Sadie's exit. I have to say, Sadie has been on her way to being almost likable lately, but I still want her gone. Too many new characters. If she's gonna go, she should go. I think she will feel awful when the truth is discovered and she realizes what a catastrophic mistake she's made! This will cost Izzie precious time in fighting this illness!
