EW's Michael Ausiello shoots down one Grey's Anatomy fan's wishful thinking about an old face coming back to Seattle, then dishes on a story line for T.R. Knight's exit that was reportedly considered but ultimately decided against, in his spoiler Q&A session today ...
Q: Now that it seems likely that Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight are leaving Grey's Anatomy, does this mean there's any chance Isaiah Washington could return as Burke?
A: Listen up, 'cause I'm only going to tell you this once: Um, no. But while we're on the subject of the looming mass exodus at Seattle Grace, a little birdie at Grey's Anatomy confided to me that Shonda Rhimes briefly flirted with the idea of having George develop a sudden interest in Dr. Hunt's background as an army doc. You thinking what I'm thinking? 'Cause I'm thinking what better way to get rid of George than to have him join the military and go off to Iraq. It'd be perfect, right? Only trouble is, a Grey's Anatomy insider tells me that story has been scrapped and replaced with "something even better." I'm not sure what that something is, but I have a call into my new BFF James Pickens, Jr. to find out!
One exit strategy T.R. Knight apparently involved his character, Dr. George O'Malley, following in the Army footsteps of Maj. Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). ABC decided against this.

I have an even BETTER idea! GIVE HIM A STORY LINE! Instead of making him even MORE out of character and making him join the stupid army, let's give him a story line! It'll make T.R. happy, George AND T.R. fans happy, and all in all there'd be happiness.

Thank goodness they scraped that idea. I wouldn't call George one of my very fav's but it doesn't take a genius to see that George and the army don't mix.
Besides the lst spontaneous thing he did was get married in Vegas....and look how that turned out.

I actually think the army would be good for the character. It opens up the possibility for him to return with interesting character development. Frankly, George doesn't really work anymore because despite the stories he's had in the past, he really hasn't changed much from who he was in the first season.

I see what you're saying about him not changing. They dealt him(george) bad cards all through season 3 & 4 and now they just ignore him.
Now they are taking on too many characters to give everyone a good story line. It's gonna turn into a prime time sopa opera and that sucks.

Yeah, great idea, if it actually were addressed. But, since it never was because George is nonexistant now. It just would make no sense.

why talk about exit strategies, when nothing official has been stated?

Don't keep taking these guys off! Give them something interesting to do for heaven's sake! I hate that the whole feel of the show has changed and not for the better! I miss those good ole days and really don't care if I miss it or see it. BOO!

george in the ARMY noooooooooooo!!!! I don´t really think in george like army guy, it´s not that kind of caracter

I made a calculation...
In "Beat Your Heart Out", George appeared for abput 23 seconds. Prosentually, he was on screen for 0.910170162 percent.
I don't blame him for wanting out.
But still, I think he should wait for a good storyline. He can't be that ungrateful. And neither can Heigl, 'cause Shonda and all the other producers made them famous. Before Grey's Anatomy, I had never heard of TR, and I only saw Heigl in Roswell. Remember where you came from, divas!
