I totally disagree about a MerDer marriage killing the show, the drama and that it should only come at the final moment-- a series finale sometime down the road. Totally disagree. I think there's a new movement in drama shows, such as Greys, to go into uncharted territory--- keeping the happy couple together and committed. I hate bringing up other shows on a Greys fan site, but here is an example-- One Tree Hill has put Lucas and Peyton together for good finally! Have they been boring? Anything BUT! Just like Shonda & Co. are doing with MerDer, the couple is together and committed to each other and the storyline follows their ups and downs. Now, I could see how you might think it was going to be boring if you assumed that MerDer being married and together forever as being simply a blissful happy ever after. But that is not the plan here. I believe the writers plan was to get away from the old writing standard of keeping the couple apart and keeping the fans yearning for the occassional reunion. That is getting old. For everyone. I think the new aim is to keep MerDer and other fan-favorite couples together and let the drama be that life isn't simply happy-ever-after--- stuff happens in people's lives. Stuff that makes it challenging to stay together. We are going to watch MerDer work through dramas, work through things that happen, work through the fact that they are two different people with two different belief systems and ways of thinking-- we are going to go on this journey of encountering all of these challenges and struggles and finding a way to work through them and come out at the other end still together. Doesn't sound boring at all. Sounds fantastic to me. And b/c they aren't constantly breaking up or being ripped apart from each other, we fans get to witness bits and pieces of MerDer chemistry, MerDer heat throughout it all! McDreamy moments are promised to us all! Maybe not every episode. But they are going to stay together. They are going to have drama and trying times. But they are GOING TO STAY TOGETHER!!! b-t-w-- it has been said. Look at quotes from PD on the subject of MerDer. This is a new frontier in TV drama writing for couples. It's going to be a great ride!!!!
McNorway, i never said u hated mer another member did though.

fans and even the critics are tired of the typical relationship on-again/of-again ... we saw that in the ratings of season 4. The fans want to see a couple like in real life, working together in the ups and downs that the relationships have. i really hope shonda stops with the relationships back and forth, this is very bored of seeing and it is already an old history...
cindylovegreys--
Thanks! I love being called a hero! Thanks for agreeing! (I really don't get how some fans are anti-MerDer--- does not make any sense to me. Makes me wonder if they just jumped into the show and have not seen all the way back from the beginning. Cuz if you have seen since S1E1, how could you not LOVE MerDer??)
We all know who is going to run their mouth about the proposal, Mark!!! I just don't get what that look was about after Der said "I thought I could trust you". And since Mark doesNOT know when to keep his mouth SHUT, he will definietly tell Lex. Well we all know she CAN'T keep her MOUTH SHUT either.!!! Oh, wait yes she can, She NEVER told the chief the TRUTH about Cristina NOT KNOWING the interns were doing the surgery!!
I wanted this proposal to be an award winning scene, but I guess Shonda is writing this part so, there goes any ROMANCE!!!
Mer is looking tired. I wonder if she has missed her cycle and doesn't realize she may or may not be pregnant. This calls for a very funny, serious moment scene with CRISTINA right about now.!!! When does season 5 end? If it ends in a few months then... This will probably be the cliff hanger. (the pregnancy)
Oh heavens, are the actors going on strike in the next few months?? Anything about SAG voting???

okay the clinical trial was a new way to "zap" inoperable tumors, such as the one addison's brother has. which is probably why she called derek. he had told her about it last time she was there, and she probably read about when it was a magazine cover story.
as for the baby talk, no idea. that is probably something we will have to watch to find out.(unless the want to be nice and give us more videos.)
fan of the show, wtf? I seriously don't get what you're trying to say.
McNorway...I was trying to be nice ;). Truth: I didn't like Mer that much until the end of season 4 and right now in S.5.
JMS, Ellen wasn't the one who asked for a raise, it was Katherine Heigl. She wanted to earn the same as Ellen (and Patrick I believe) and she got turned down because she wasn't the lead. Thank God for that.

The pictures with children are difficult and the cast want to make
their life easier.
So there could be talk about babies and the characters could pretend working in that direction but there will not be MerDeR babies.

Well, I couldn't care less for the MerDer engagement. If they get engaged or not, whatever. BUT MCBABIES?! HELL NO! That would mean that they're becoming a family. And CLEARLY, Mer is not mother-material. At least not for a couple of years. I mean, with all her familiy-issues, a big Shepard-family is lightyears away.
McNorway Says:

And I also forgot to meantion; what if they get babies - who the hell is going to stay home with them? Obviously both of them is too obsessed with their work and careers. Mer has a bright future as a surgeon and Derek is a famous brainsurgeon. Do you guys REALLY think one of them is going to give that up? And do you really imagine Mer as a typical housewife? I think not.
As for all this talk about babies...
Der obviously wants them someday. He's always alluded to that. I think the reference in the promo was merely Der having had a conversation with Mer about "some day", which sounds like it may have been an intentional conversation to test her comfort level b/c of his wanting to ask her to marry him. He knows Mer. He knows she'll freak out. He's talking about big forever things with her to try to get a sense of how much she'd freak out, if at all. Then he's excited b/c they had a conversation about babies "some day" and she must have seemed warm to the idea-- she didn't seem scared of it at all.
I don't think Ellen Pompeo is pregnant. Did you see the most recent pic posted here of her with her husband, Chris Ivery? She's still quite thin.
McNorway-- I think Mer will make an excellent Mother some day. She is SO compassionate. SO patient. Do I think she's ready now? NO. Do I want her to be ready now? NO. I want to savor every minute of the proposal, engagement, marriage and all the ups and downs for what it is-- not throw a baby in the mix yet. And, as for them both having such great careers that they wouldn't give up? In many families both parents continue their careers. One may take a break for a while. Sometimes they take turns taking breaks. Sometimes each of them sacrifice some time in their schedules. Don't get me wrong, I strongly feel that there is A LOT of value in staying home with your kids (that is what I do), but not all families are built the same way, not all parents are built the same way. Doesn't make them any less of a family. And doesn't mean they are bad parents at all. Given Mer's experiences with her robot-career driven Mom, I think she'd try everything in her power to not be that kind of Mom, to be there for her kids as much as possible and mostly to be emotionally there for them, while maintaining a career, or not.
greysaddiction: You have some good points.
Just wanted to clear with you guys that I didn't say Mer would make a bad mother. I just think - as greysaddiction - that she needs more time before she's ready to even think about babies. So I don't think we'll be hearing MerDer babie-footsteps in a while - At least not this season.
McNorway-- that we totally agree on. I really don't think there will be MerDer baby footsteps for a long time. And I think that would be rushing them too much. That, coming from a very busy stay-at-home-Mom of 3, age 6 and under!!! Let them enjoy each other first. Babies later!

I just don't think they'll get married until the end. My point was that some fans act as if putting them together will be happily-ever-after and it won't. And One Tree Hill is only still around because it's on the CW, who don't need great ratings to keep a show. Nothing against the CW, I watch their shows.

I think that babies is the right thing right now for Meredith! You want her to be ready for it but it wouldn't be as much fun as to see her facing all the difficulties within short:) It will be amazing to see Mer growing into the mother role. If Mer+Der gets a McBaby within short Mer might not be ready for it at the time but Mer+Der will grow even closer to each other while learning everything about being parents. It would be so fun to watch this!!! If they are going to have a baby in the last season, we won't be able to see how they will be as parents. If they have a baby now on the other hand, we'd be able to follow him/her growing up and see how Meredith and Derek are doing as parents and facing all drama that follows having a baby etc.

Men are volnerable as well there are many infections(offen symptomless) that could make them childless.Addison's poisonous ivy rush is a suggestion. So Derek could have not children as well.
And I doubt that Meredith will want to get pregnant before marriage; that could damage her reputation; and women hate blackmail situations
I totally agree that Sara Ramirez doesn't get enough screen time. She is a fantastic actress and she has a crappy storyline. They show her once or twice the whole show and that's it. Just because Erica left doesn't mean they need to put Callie in the back.
