Shonda Rhimes Downplays Katherine Heigl Comments

When Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl withdrew her own name from Emmy contention, rumors of her departure from the show grew rapidly.

But creator Shonda Rhimes says there are no hard feelings.

"I didn't feel insulted," Rhimes said late last week in Los Angeles. "I have a wonderful working relationship with Katherine Heigl, and Izzie is one of my favorite characters. So when I heard her comment, it was a bit surprising."

Rhimes, who also serves as executive producer or Grey's Anatomy, added, "But Katie is an outspoken person, and I think we all knew that already."

But according to a source, in response to Heigl's griping, the writers are considering giving her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, a fatal brain tumor.

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson sort of denied that last week, though his vague comments certainly did not quell the speculation.

ABC Sort of Denies Plans to Kill Off Heigl

Rumors have been running rampant about star Katherine Heigl's departure from Grey's Anatomy. The most prevalent theory, bolstered by news of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's return to Grey's Anatomy, revolves around Izzie contracting a brain tumor.

Yesterday, ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson commented briefly on the subject of Heigl's future, and while he said that Izzie isn't going anywhere, reading between the lines a bit reveals some awfully ambiguous statements.

According to McPherson, Katherine Heigl is still very much in the mix with Grey's Anatomy, and Izzie Stevens won't be offed anytime soon.

In fact, he promised the following:

"Katherine is absolutely staying with the show. She has an unbelievable storyline this year, which is central to everything going on this season. Shonda Rhimes is really excited about that; she’s the one who actually crafted that."

Grey's Anatomy Snubbed By Emmy Awards

For the first time in three full seasons (Season One was only nine episodes long and therefore not eligible), Grey's Anatomy has been left off the final list of nominees for Outstanding Drama Series at the forthcoming Emmy Awards.

Up for the honor are Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost and Mad Men. Grey's Anatomy was among 10 semifinalists but missed the final cut.

A pair of Grey's Anatomy cast members, Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson, received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series.

What

Impressively, this marks the fourth consecutive nomination for Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang) and the third straight for Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey).

Last year, Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) was nominated and won the Emmy Award for that category. This season... well, you know the details.

What do you think about this? Should Grey's Anatomy have been among the top six - or was Season Four really not up to par?

Grey's Anatomy Season Five Premiere: September 25

Premiere dates for ABC’s fall season are have been announced - Season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy officially kicks off with a two-hour premiere Thursday, September 25!

Grey

That's all. Set your calendars accordingly, Grey's Anatomy fans.

Grey's Anatomy News & Gossip: Jeffrey Dean Morgan to Guest Star Once Again; Izzie Has Brain Tumor?

According to today's Us Weekly, Katherine Heigl's Dr. Izzie Stevens could be killed off Grey's Anatomy next season - a piece of gossip that we've already discussed at length, and the source of which must be considered here.

Heigl, 29, withdrew herself from the Emmy Awards process, saying that she didn’t feel she was “given the material this season” to warrant an award.

In response to this well-publicized griping, the Grey's Anatomy producers are considering giving Izzie Stevens a brain tumor, according to Us Weekly.

“Shonda Rhimes and the writers are pissed,” a source says. “It’s their way of screwing with her. She won’t know whether she’s going to live or die.”

Don

Regardless, there’s some good - and actually confirmed - news for fans: memorable Grey's Anatomy guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan will reprise his role as Denny Duquette again! As we know, Denny passed away in Season Two, then returned to the show in Season Three during Meredith Grey's temporary visit to the afterlife.

How will be return to the show yet again in Season Five? One popular theory is that Izzie will begin seing visions of Denny after contracting her tumor.

A second source adds that such a plot, ironically, would be great for Katherine Heigl: “If her character does get a tumor, she’ll probably get an Emmy!”

A rep for ABC commented only briefly, saying, “We can confirm that [Jeffrey Dean Morgan] will be back, but we are not releasing any further details.”

Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Callica Update

All the Callica (Callie and Erica) fans are dying for some gossip on what will become of Grey's Anatomy's lesbian romance in Season Five.

There's the pregnancy rumor which has been addressed quite a bit, but there must be something else, right? Are they officially a couple?

Is Erica too emotionally guarded and stunted for a relationship? And where does the great Mark Sloan fit in when it comes to Callie?

Erica and Callie Work It

TV Guide's Matt Mitovich doesn't have too much to add in the Grey's Anatomy spoiler department, but he does say this in his new column:

"Oh, the poor Callica fans and their cute little couple name. Well, things are going to be... awkward between the two docs when Grey's Anatomy comes back. And the pregnancy rumor, I hear from one source, is pure hogwash."

Hmm... does that mean there's no pregnant Callie, or no pregnant character at all?
