Round Table Discussion: "Losing My Mind"

While fans gather in our forum to discuss each character, couple and plot twist, the Grey's Anatomy Insider staff comes together to talk about the key moments and share their opinions regarding the latest episode of our favorite drama.

Our topics for "Losing My Mind" include the Callie-Erica kiss, the Miranda-Tucker fight, the Alex-Ava weirdness and the Mer-Der reunion ...

1. By taking care of Rebecca himself, is Alex being loving or ignorant?

McCritic: He's trying to be loving, but Alex is a doctor. He should know better. In this case, ignorance is far from bliss.

iheartizzie: I know he's trying to be nice, but come on, Alex Karev. Keep your eyes on the true prize. I heart Izzie and I know you do, too. Make the move.

missingBurke: Karev thought he was gonna be a father. In his disappointment at that falsity, he's now treating Rebecca like a confused child. Is it misguided? Perhaps. But it's out of love.

Get Out

2. Choose a side: Tucker or Bailey?

iheartizzie: Love is a losing game, despite the best of intentions. There is no right, no wrong. Just deep-rooted problems and life decisions not fixed by even the longest of arguments. Kudos to the writers for this very realistic scene.

McCritic: Tucker. He's right that Bailey is being short-sighted by putting little Tuck in day care just so she can finish charts by his side.

missingBurke: I feel bad for Tucker, but his analogy of performing surgery versus parenting just didn't make sense. Bailey is more in the right.

3. The Callie/Hahn kiss: Just for fun? Or a sign of things to come?

missingBurke: Just for fun. Come on! Who doesn't love the occasional female lip lock? We know Mark sure did!

McCritic: Because the show seems to be struggling creatively, I'm gonna - sadly - say it's a sign of things to come. Look for Callie and Hahn to start dating, in a sign that Shonda Rhimes has run out of story line ideas.

iheartizzie: I like that the show pushes the envelope, but I just don't buy it with Callie. With Erica there is an element of mystery, as she's new to Seattle Grace, but Callie has been sleeping with the fellas this whole time. Now she's just gonna be a lesbian? Hope it was just for fun, guys.

4. Shonda Rhimes has said that Meredith and Derek will get together for good, and how this will happen will be "yummy" and "special." Has she followed through on her promise so far?

McCritic: Gosh, no. All that's happened since the show returned from its strike hiatus has been a contrived brain tumor surgical study - used just to get Mer/Der in the same room a lot - and the show using a therapist to explain all the fault of Meredith loyal viewers already knew she had. This isn't special. It's boring.

iheartizzie: Absolutely not. There's still a window of opportunity to salvage this season next week (and a two-hour episode at that), but Grey's Anatomy has been flat since the strike. I'd love to hear readers' thoughts on this, as it's hard to criticize a show I love so, but I don't really buy Nurse Plot Device or Therapist Plot Device or Clinical Trial Plot Device. I haven't given up hope but patience is wearing a thin. Here's hoping for a brilliant finale. Tie it together, Shonda. Bring it home. We know you can do it.

missingBurke: Yes. Grey's Anatomy prides itself on real, flawed characters. We don't need major events to get Mer and Der together finally. We just need them to slowly evolve, to see one another as we've seen them both for years now. Once they do, damn right it'll be yummy and special.

Who are you people? The show has been brilliant since the strike- well, this past week wasn't brilliant but very good, funny etc. and last week's episode 4.14 brought me back to the heyday of Season 2.

  2. shawna Says:

to be honest, i'm not expecting derek and meredith to get together by the end of this season. last episode just drove another huge wedge in between them. as for the therapist plot device, she's just making the fans remember all the bad plot devices the show has used before. next week had better be mindblowing, or i don't really know how much longer i'll be watching

  3. mer/derlover19 Says:

i tlty agree w? vstewart's comment!!! the show has been brilliant in its return and we have even gotten some of the humor that we all loved in the first two seasons back as well. as for shawna's comment, come on!, what fantasy world r u living in, i mean Shonda already told us there gettin back together its not like its not gonna happen its just a question of how! anyway i cant wait for next week its going to be unbelieveable, i mean did u guys SEE the preview!!! AMAZING!!!!!

    as always...
    Grey's Rules!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! :)

  4. gladluvgrey Says:

I don't agree...the show after the strike is better, brilliant even...than the previous part even with the plant plot device like you said, and I did felt that I don't need a great and shocking experience to see Mer and Der together...and even if some of you think the clinical trial is stupid I think it's a great way to put them a lot together and able to reconnect with what they believed and what they want.

  5. Lacie Says:

I agree... Nothing exciting has happened. Nothing shocking. Grey's needs to revive itself with the 2 hour finale. I hope I'm not dissapointed! MerDer and Izzie&Alex need to be together for good!

  6. Debbie Says:

Hmm...The season finale needs to really turn it up a notch with the whole MerDer situation. I haven't seen anything "yummy" or "special" relating to them in quite awhile. The whole clinical trial was a great way to get them back to at least speaking, even if last night it caused some issues. I hate the Rose thing and was definitely disappointed that Derek went back to her in the end, saying he didnt want to do complicated anymore. Doesn't leave much hope for a MerDer reunion, but we'll see what Shonda does!

  7. greydaze Says:

I'd have to agree that the show is still lacking. I mean I still love it but really, to me nothing earth shattering has happened. Yeah, Mer and Der can get together next week, but have they resolved anything relative to each other's issues. Truly if you want to work something out you do it by communicating to each other and helping each other through things. I'll be glad to see them together but is it just to salvage the ratings before breaking for this season - it's tough, Grey's is entering that time when struggling to keep it fresh comes into play - I hope the writers can pull it off - I love the actors and will keep watching, although I hate the Hahn/Callie thing -

  8. hafsa Says:

i was a little disappointed with the whole merder r/ship yesterday......hw Shonda will clear this mess in two hours i have no idea........the finale better be mindblowing and realistic.

  9. Nes Says:

I honestly don't see any way this could be turned around in only 2h. I mean realistically! I feel like this episode drove them apart even more and it would take a while to fix things. Derek should have dumped the plant. At the beginning of the epi I was sure it was going to happen and when they reunited in the end, it just seemed soooo unnecessary and annoying. Because everyone knows what Shonda said.

When I saw the promo's I was really exited. But really, those two szenes where the best in the entire episode. I was really disappointed!

And I hate Cristina's storyline. It's not leading anywhere and she's not dealing with Burke at all, she's just being a bitch. What's this all about??

I agree, it has been horribly flat since the strike. I keep waiting for something to happen. It's too much teasing! If I hadn't heard what Shonda said about getting Mer&Der together I probably wouldn't even be watching anymore because it's so upsetting.

I really really love this show. But if it keeps going downhill I'd rather make up my own ending than having it all ruined like that.

  10. Lydia Says:

I have actually loved these last few episodes. I know they aren't... season 2, but they have been significantly better than pre-strike episodes. Personally, I'm not going to complain, though, because Grey's is back!

  11. lane Says:

I don't agree with your comments - especially about Callie/Hahn. Go back and watch from the beginning...I always thought Callie could be with women. While she has been "sleeping with guys"...was she really emotionally involved? No (only with George until he freaked out on her). Mark's been a sex buddy... There friendship will continue - infact she may even be pregnant by him. She will get involved in a relationship with Hahn regardless. At least its' something new -
Shonda and Betsy still have lots of ideas!

    Cheers-

  12. Qi Says:

Meredith has always been doubting love. First she wanted Burke and Cristina's marriage to prove to herself that true love exists. When Burktina didn't get married she broke Derek's heart. Secondly, in this week's epi, Meredith was so sure that the tumor patient was making up her lover. When she finally realized that he did indeed exist, it essentially blew all her beliefs away. True love can exist for her, but she just didn't know how to deal with it. I think the therapist plot device will be used to make Mer realize what's she's been missing out by not being with Derek. Maybe the finale will work out.

  13. Hannah Says:

first of all, bailey all the way because she is right about the luxury thing
i also think thought that when derek said to Rose, "cant' we just make this easier?"
i seriously thought he was gonna say, "i will and always ahve loved meredith"
that hahn+torres kiss was nuts & cally's reaction was utterly filled with shock
what was going throught her head?
the suicidal thing was extremely interesting as well
now in addition to the question about what was going through callie's head, what do u think that the shrink is gonna do to fix mer?
please answer i would like to see some ideas because i have none

  14. Kelly Says:

I agree that this season has been boring and flat. The episode with Addison was pretty good, but I thought last night was terrible. . one of the worst. I had to go back and watch the entire season 2 collection to remind myself why I love this show. The only thing that has kept me watching is the promise of a MerDer reunion and the hope that the writers get it together next season and bring back the magic. The finale better be amazing (and better include the promised reunion) or I'm done and will be watching The Office next year. The character of Rose is awful and boring. . they need to get rid of her and move on. I also don't think the Callie/Hahn thing works, but they may surprise me. I feel like there's still so much possibility, but if the finale isn't amazing and the next season doesn't start off better than I'm very sorry to say that they will definitely lose a lot of viewers. Most people I know that haven't already jumped ship are just teetering on the edge. Maybe Shonda and the other writers should do what I did and watch season 2 for inspiration! Also, I miss the character of Burke. . sorry but I really do. Lexie has really grown on me. Please do something with Christina! She's an amazing actress. . give her something!
Here's hoping for a great finale!!!!! Please!!! We need it!

  15. kathy Says:

there was a poem quoted in last night's episode by wadsworth does anyone know the title of the poem.

  16. hannah Says:

another question, what is cristina gonna do?
what do you think that hahn was talking to the shrink about?
    just curious

  17. hannah Says:

i think that rebecca is obviously delusional and alex doesn't want to admit it because then he would be in love with the crazy girl

i also think that lexi is most definitely growing on me although i feel this obligation to hate her because meredith hates her soooooo much

it was also really cute when alex was helping rebecca change her clothes

i also liked how clueless the chief was with the winking thing

the george-tuck thing was extremely cute as well

    where was the poem recited?

  18. getoverit Says:

i wish christina would pull her head out of rear and deal! her friens need the brutal honesty we all love her for! Meredith tell him you love him, Derek don't be so clingy give Mer some space. You do spend 24 hours together and the poor girl needs some space and doesn't have to deal with all her problems at once. Karev geese man, what is wrond with you she is sycho, I guess with all those brain surgeries not everything got fixed. You couldn't be the nice guy for every other nice girl. And last of all Tucker senior get over yourself lot's of families have Mr. Moms, You knew who you married, a smarter women! besides spend some recovery time with your son, brain surgery I would think takes some extensive recovery time. everyone just needs to get over thier ego!

  19. tofu Says:

getoverit is right. I just realized it when you said it that they see each other every single day and night and yet Derek wants more from her. It's like he wants her soul or something.

the chief's email made me laugh so hard. so funny.

  20. greysfan Says:

i feel as if during the strike the writers had lots of time to think and the characters evolved in their minds but they didn't show that to us on the show so i always feel that there is something missing. like torres is not hostile with izzie and how did george and izzie's romance fizzled out?

i think eva/rebecca probably has the tumour and she'll be the last patient in the clinical trial

  21. kelly Says:

i don't know how i feel about season 4:part 2..i have some split opinions. it may seem boring but i think it is because there are CONSTANTLY deep underlying parallels..i mean, EVERYTHING in the show is incredibly symbolic..especially with mer/der and their trial. it's, in essence, a trial of whether or not their relationship can make it. and i personally think they are on the road to success now, with the whole actuality of andre from the last episode. basically you just have to watch and understand that the storylines are a story within a story..that probably doesn't make sense, but in any case, i'm trying to say that if you comprehend all the symbolism, it's extremely heartwrenching..at least for me.
however, it is getting a tad repetitive and very drawn out. all i can say is that thank goodness the finale is next week, because i don't know how much longer i could endure the wait for the climax!

  22. kelly Says:

oh and greysfan, i'm completely with you on your eva opinion..the minute i noticed something was fishy with her, that was my prediction! i think she'll be the first successful patient, and i think meredith wants to prove that this trial CAN work so she can be assured that her relationship with derek CAN work.

  23. rya Says:

OMG!!! the ava thing would make SOOOO much sense!
It's like a lightbulb just went on in my head. Ava will make it through the surgery, realize she really still loves her husband (it was the tumor talking!), Alex will get depressed, Izzie will say " i told you so." and they will be happily ever after. As for Mer/Der... YEAH!!!! they finally get to break open that champagne cuz they "got it right!" (not only in the trial.... but in their relationship?) :) I'm so excited for the finale!!!

  24. Dutchie Says:

I think Shonda is not yet back to the greatness of previous seasons. I didn't like the beginning of this season. We are slowly getting back.

The announcement of Der and Mer finally being together made a lot of us keep on watching, because we now know we do not have to endurance all the terrible storylines and the terrible nurse Rose much longer.

  25. HANNAh Says:

urgh i m excited but also sad about the season finale

    they always leave you hanging

    they r sooooooooo bittersweet!
