Grey's Anatomy Round Table Discussion: "Freedom"
While fans gather in our forum to discuss each character, couple and plot twist, the Grey's Anatomy Insider staff comes together to talk about the key moments and share their opinions regarding the latest episode of our favorite drama.
Round Table topics for "Freedom" include memorable Grey's Anatomy quotes and kisses, Emmy winning performances, unanswered questions and predictions ...
1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the finale?
McCritic: I can't recall the exact wording - and, no, it's not because I was crying so hard that my nose blowing drowned out the precise quote... I swear - but when Dr. Webber romantically told Adele that he was her husband and he was coming home, it almost made the confusing back and forth between these characters for the last two years worthwhile.
missingBurke: Have to go with this Meredith Grey quote (that it was interrupted by the kiss helps): "Now I'm here feeling like a lame ass loser. I got all whole and healed and you don't show up. And now it's all ruined because you took so long to come home! And I couldn't even find that bottle of champagne..."
iheartizzie: So many possibilities here, but when the "new" Mark told Callie how he wished he was all someone thought about and encouraged her to follow her heart with Erica, that was particularly awesome. I love Mark.
2. Which of the many kisses in this episode was your favorite?
iheartizzie: They were all great, but in an outside-the-box pick, I'm going with the love-struck teen clinical trial patients, Beth and Jeremy. Most of the time the medical cases exist solely as devices through which our favorite characters interact, but these two were really terrific and helped make the episode great.
McCritic: Alex and Izzie. Not because I wanna see these two get back together, but because it was a vulnerable moment, played to perfection by Justin Chambers, that actually did not result in misguided sex for a change.
missingBurke: That montage was amazing, but nothing compares to Meredith and Derek. That kiss was an entire year in the making, and worth the wait.
3. Season Four was full of great performances by the Grey's Anatomy cast. Which cast member(s) do you think deserves an Emmy nomination?
missingBurke: Grey's Anatomy would win Best Drama every year if it weren't for some uneven story lines - the acting is superb from every cast member. It wouldn't be Grey's Anatomy, however, without the glue: Patrick Dempsey.
McCritic: Chandra Wilson. No actress on television fights back tears in a more forceful, emotional way (watch the scene where she hands Izzie the keys to the clinic again for proof) than the woman who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey.
iheartizzie: Justin Chambers was absolutely stunning at the end. To sell such an epic breakdown of macho Alex Karev, whose emotions and turmoil had been internalized for so long, is no easy task, but it was so believable. Chambers is terrific week in and week out, and with this, his talents should finally be recognized.
4. Bigger plot hole: George realizing he can ask for a second chance at the test a year later, or Richard coming home to Adele when he already did that once?
McCritic: George's realization. Instead of cheating on his wife with his best friend, perhaps George should have been reading the testing rules.
iheartizzie: In Season Two, Adele tells Richard that he doesn't put his family first. He throws a prom for niece Camille, but Adele leaves him anyway. Then, near the end of Season Three, Richard returns to Adele, only to have a door shut in his face. He thinks there is another man inside; this is never clarified. In the Season Three finale, Richard and Adele reunite when she is rushed to the hospital - yet they're mysteriously apart again as Season Four opens. Come on, writers. Even a man as funny as Chief can't rescue himself from these plot holes. He deserves better.
missingBurke: Richard let Meredith re-take the intern exam after she flaked. George never thought to ask if he could give it another shot?
5. After their romantic reunion, Derek told Meredith to wait for him and left to end things with Rose. What will happen next?
iheartizzie: For this answer I must quote a reader who submitted her own theory via our Contact Us form. I'm curious to know what others think of this potential outcome: "It's so obvious that as Derek tells Meredith to "wait" for him ... that we will find out next season he has been killed in some car accident going off to tell Rose that they are through. THIS COULD NOT BE MORE OBVIOUS."
missingBurke: After quickly dispatching of Rose, Derek returns to Meredith in the house of candles, as promised - with an engagement ring in hand.
McCritic: Derek will die... of embarrassment because his car is out of gas!
What's next for Derek and Meredith after the emotional season finale?

Derek will not die. Watch "Ask Grey's Anatomy with Shonda and Betsy" for proof. I know the writing sometimes gets off kilter but there is no reason to kill Derek . . . I'm not sure Meredith could take it and then you'd be without the title character.
May 27th, 2008 11:10 AM
Whille pacing and ranting as she waits for Derek in their house of lights, she says, "Damn brain man."
May 27th, 2008 11:29 AM
Derek will NOT die in a car accident !! if u listen to the abc grey's anatomy podcast, Shonda Rhimes said that derek will not be killed in a car accident, he will not be married to Rose and Rose will not be pregnant !! she said that meredith and derek will be together for good .. but in the end she said that we might see Rose again :S :S in season five !!
anyway i hope he does come back with that engagement ring :D
May 27th, 2008 11:44 AM
The "lame ass loser" line cracks me up every time I hear it!!!
May 27th, 2008 11:56 AM
I really think Ellen Pompeo deserves to win an award! She does an incredible job making us love her dark-twisty-flawed character. GIVE ELLEN AN AWARD!
May 27th, 2008 1:23 PM
I agree with StephRo that Ellen definitely deserves a nom! She was so amazing this season. And if Derek dies I will stop watching. Seriously that would like be ridiculously gay.
May 27th, 2008 2:38 PM
Derek won't get hit by a car. It's not Desperate Housewives. Being abducted by aliens on that hill is much more likely. Maybe the candles were a signal for the mothership. Maybe Meredith is an alien, which could explain how she survived that drowning incident.
May 27th, 2008 2:56 PM
MissingBurke's prediction for the engadgment is really sweet, but that is wayyyyyyy to speedy! I think it shound be kids than marrige. see MerDer in s5!!!!
May 27th, 2008 3:04 PM
hello!!! does anyone pay attention to these characters?!?!? what we have to look forward to at the opening of next season is a whole lot of S-E-X!!! theres no denying the chemistry they have and we all know that shonda loves putting it on the screen for us!! the unexpected will just have to wait its turn!!
as always...
Grey's Rules!! SERIOUSLY!!! :)
:)
May 27th, 2008 3:09 PM
The rumors of Derek not "coming back" have got to be put to rest...............listen to Shonda's podcast............she emphatically says that there will NOT be an accident; Rose is NOT pregnant and Derek IS coming back. He and Meredith WILL be together, working on being a couple and all the ups and downs (and sexiness!) that comes with it!! Looking forward to S5!!!!
May 27th, 2008 4:23 PM
This is what I think will happen, although it doesn't matter:
Let's start off with the infamous MerDer story-line:
In the opening, I think it'll pick up where it all left off. Derek will confront Rose and they'll end things within the first three episodes or less, probably, he and Mer will go back to his place and make love.
Peachyness! It's predictable, though, so the writers might take a different approach with that.
George (aka, my little lover ~~):
My little Teddy Bear will retake his intern test and, as I'm hoping, will pass and join the rest of our favorite residents at SGH. Poor baby! I woulda' let him pass...
Callie and Erica:
I have a feeling they'll be together, having a long talk about something. Their relationship, more than likely. They'll more than likely be an official item by the fifth episode. Yay! I like these two. They're cute together. Those kissing scenes must be hard though. Cos...I'd be getting half drunk and making out with T.R. as a warm-up before hand.
Mark:
Poor McSteamy. He'll release his feelings by sleeping with some random woman, probably. Or he'll be like Mer in season two and be solibet or whatever it was. ...NAW!! This is McSteamy we're talking about, for God's sake.
Lexie:
I love her to death. I think she'll have a crush on George or something. Hard to say about what's gonna happen with her, but she might become the great doctor she was talking about. Perhaps she and Dr. O'Malley will be playing a little "check up" in the first ten episodes?
All I've got to say to that is if they need a filler for Lexie in those parts, I'M AVAILABLE!
Chief and Adele:
I think they'll get back together and things just might be fine and dandy. Orrr Adele will get all...weird...or something, and the Chief and Bailey might hook up. Naw, that'd never happen.
Bailey:
My favorite hard-nosed doctor with an adorable wittle baby! Hm, I think she'll be focused on the O.R. and be the best damn Chief Resident SGH has ever seen. You know how Dr. Bailey is, she's the one to be in charge and make everything better. Love her.
Izzie:
Isobel Stevens. Tsk tsk. I pity you, Iz. You lost your fiance, had an affair with your best friend that's married (although I did like them together, cos they were so cute. And that elevator scene from "The Other Side of This Life pt. 2" was HOT), then you two break up and now you've got the keys to the clinic. Not to mention making out with Dr. Evil Spawn. Wow. Poor dear needs to sort her crap out.
Alex:
I'm completely lost with his character and never actually cared for him too much. He's slowly growing on me, as long as he isn't a prick to George...
Cristina:
More singing in the morgue. That was kickass.
She needs to continue focusing on her career and be the best, hardcore surgeon SGH has seen. She's brillant. Love her.
...I'm on pain killers. Sorry, ladies (and gents).

GIVE ELLEN POMPEO AN AWARD!!!!!!!
If it wasn't for her amazing acting, season 4 part 2 wouldn't have been as amazing. Justin Chambers did do amazing in the season finale, but it was Ellen that pulled off an amazing scene all through episodes 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16.
May 27th, 2008 6:11 PM
the season finally was SOO AMAZINGGG omgg.
i cannnott waiitt for season 5!!
did anyone catch merediths face when derek holds the bottle of champagne. its PRICELESS!
and justin chambers was sooooo amazingg and so was bailey. and christina was so cute when she like swung her chair around and did a little twist.
MERDER FOREVERRR<333!!!! im so happpyyy
May 27th, 2008 6:35 PM
Where do I find Shonda's podcast??
May 27th, 2008 6:43 PM
Ellen Pompeo seriously deserves an Emmy - terrific acting throughout S4, especially the post-stike episodes.
Justin Chambers, I agree, was incredible in that final episode, played it perfectly.
But highlight of the episode had to be the MerDer reunion. Wahay. Been a very long wait but it finally happened and (thank god for Shonda [& Betsy] we don't have to go the whole summer with speculation from pessimistic people) Derek returning unharmed (:D) and back to Meredith for good is just amazing. PD and EP have such awesome chemistry, must be lovely to be such great friends with a co-star. Finally it won't be going to waste.
May 27th, 2008 8:23 PM
I think that somewhere in the first 10 episodes of season 5, we will find out that Merideth is pregnet and that her and Dr. Shepard will be happy. I personally hope we never see Rose again, I hate her. The whole Callie Hahn thing will probably continue to add a little plot and real world stuff. Christina will probably go back to being the kick ass surgeon that she was when Burke was their. Alex and Izzie not going to happen. I also think we won't see Ava/Rebecca/Jane Doe whatever you want to call her. I can see Marc Slone hooking up with Izzie, i think they would make a cute coupple.
May 27th, 2008 8:47 PM
1. In Meredith's speech - "I had this whole thing about I was gonna build us a house, but I DON'T build houses because I'm a surgeon." That was my favourite quote of the entire series.
2. Alex and Izzie's kiss was, by far, the most distinguished, the most heartbreaking. That's not to say that I didn't like the others, though - Richard & Adele's was also very, very sweet; and of course there's always Erica & Callie's. But I couldn't help but think about how Mark was just so... Ugh! Lol.
3. Justin Chambers, at the moment, because of the way he yelled. But Ellen Pompeo also deserves it, and so does Chandra Wilson (or Sandra Oh, I don't mind which).
By the way, doesn't anybody feel sorry for Lexie? If she's looking for happiness, George is where she will NOT find it, guaranteed.
May 27th, 2008 9:09 PM
I believe that Ellen P. should of won awards for S2-S4...especially season 3 with drowning and the mother and stepmother dying thing and the sisters she never knew about...she deserves many awards....Anybody that calls themself a "Lame Ass Loser" in front of Patrick Dempsey deserves awards..lol
May 27th, 2008 9:35 PM
derek wont die. why do people even believe that crap for?
May 27th, 2008 10:57 PM
Hello from down under, we are not even close to the finally episode and already i am so excited to see the make up kiss between MerDer.
May 28th, 2008 12:03 AM
Best show ever. I can not wait for season 5 to air, and for the DVD box to be released so I can watch it over and over and over again....
I have never been more in love!
May 28th, 2008 12:09 AM
I have also seen some, I think but hope not, photoes which might have been thorugt photoshop. Photoes of Mer in weddingdress and no surprise here Der as the grom..... You can only wish for that ending...
May 28th, 2008 1:50 AM
THE SEASON FINALE WAS THE BEST EVER!! I was on the edge of my seat laughing, crying, gasping.......all at the same time. I just love the way Shonda showed how everyone has changed over this season. There were so many wonderful surprises. Meredith has finally gotten herself together and is ready to love Derrick. Dr. Bailey admits she has too much on her plate and will give some of it up for her family. Alex shows real compassion, etc. etc. etc. She definitely brought back my faith in my favorite show.
Okay, people, Shonda has confirmed that Derek and Mer are going to be a couple at last!! Rose is history!! I don't think Alex and Izzie will be a couple again..........been there, done that!! Justin Chambers' performance was awesome. I don't want to see Lexie with George because he needs to stop sleeping with his roommates/friends now. Lexie needs to find her true love. The love story between Beth and Jeremy was beautiful. I was hoping that both of them would live, but it had to be only one for the Mer/Der relationship to turn out the way it did. YOU GO GIRL.......to Shonda Rhimes!! I'm so glad that the chief and Adele have gotten back together too. I hate the relationship between Callie and Erica because I want to see Callie with a real man. I can't imagine her being "bisexual." We know that Mark isn't the one for her though. Oh poor, poor Mark. I'm hoping our "manwhore" will find true love in Season 5. He's growing and I think he can change. I don't really care for Cristina, but I do like the way she's changing also. She needs to find a new love too. All work and no play.............................!!
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Season 5. OH, HOW I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
May 28th, 2008 4:33 AM
well, its an amazing finale.. everyone is kissing. thank you shonda for touching my life.. i love how merder get backs together. "hey meredith how many candles did you use??" that is very sweet for me.. a lot of effort. i love how derek wants to start a relationship with meredith. ellen and derek acts naturally. they really look good together. to ellen, stay simple and kind on and off camera. i love you guys. that's a responsible gentleman stuff. all the character's personality have improve.. i love bailey fo accepting that she's only a human being that she cannot have everything.. and alex, he is starting to become a man we wanted him to be.
to the critics, don't you think ellen deserves an award or even if nomination only for her incomparable performance in the entire existence of grey's anatomy? she is a brilliant actress.. and most of all without her there will be no grey's anatomy??
she is just the lead star of the show who touch ourlives.. keep up the good work girl..
to the fans like me, just an opinion.. have you seen the picture where meredith is holding the bottle of wine infront of derek. i have not seen that picture in the finale. i think it is the beginning of season five. cause as you notice the last scene is taken at night. the background of the picture is already at dawn. well derek came back and meredith stand still where derek left her... ""where's our bedroom?""" remember.... its all i thought..
i really hope that shonda will pitched that the ending of the season five is the image of meredith carrying a baby while she is leaning in derek's arms.. they are outside their house sitting in a bench while watching the sunset. can you imagine how beautiful that scene is??
to all the cast of my number 1 tv show, grey's anatomy....thank you guys.for being part of me.. keep up the good work.. can wait to see you on september... shonda your a great great writer of all seasons..

I think Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, or Patrick Dempsey. Ellen is just a great actress in general, she can do anything she's asked to do, and does it fantastically. Chandra is my favorite "heart wrenching/evil" actress. She can make anyone have tears come to their eyes. Alex Karev has never really been the emotional type, but Justin can make anything possible. And Patrick Dempsey. He can do anything, and can do anything well. Give at least one, if not all, of them an award!
