Shonda Rhimes Wants Meredith, Derek Together For Good
“My goal is to get Meredith [Ellen Pompeo] and Derek [Patrick Dempsey] together for good and let them try to figure out what it is to be in a relationship in the future.” - Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.
The executive producer’s words may offer welcome relief for fans exhausted by months - years - of Meredith and Derek getting closer, yet always driven apart.
“That is something that time off [during the writers’ strike] really gave me some perspective on — whether or not we could actually do it, how we could do it, that it would be amazing to watch how that works,” Rhimes said.
Will the much-maligned Meredith and Derek love story finally be repaired?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shonda Rhimes said she had dinner with Dempsey and “we talked about all of this. As actors, they’re very invested in Derek and Meredith. Ellen and I are getting together Monday.”
Even the Grey’s Anatomy cast itself is excited by this news.
When told of the MerDer development, T.R. Knight exclaimed, “Oh, wow, I didn’t know that! I guess Meredith and Derek are gonna smooch again!”
On a slightly less ecstatic note, Knight said he is busy getting over a bad cold before heading back to work next week: “I got the crud that’s been going around,” he said as he drove home from a doctor’s appointment yesterday. “It was like, Body is crashing, you’ve got a week and a half to be sick before work starts, so go.”
Also coming up when Grey’s Anatomy returns April 24:
- Lauren Stamile, who plays McDreamy’s latest potential love interest, Nurse Rose, will return for all five new spring episodes.
- Elizabeth Reaser, as Jane Doe / Ava / Rebecca, will be back for three.
I always knew Meredith and Derek would be together by the end, but for Shonda Rhimes to actually say it’s going to happen, and relatively soon is awesome! Amen to that!
Yes! This is so awesome to me! I always wanted to see this, and being a HUGE merder fan this makes me ecstatic beyond belief. To see them together soons make me long for the last five episodes of this season. Dangit, Shonda, you have got me addicted so much more now that mer/der are going to be together. To see Ellen’s and Patrick’s chemistry together once again will be absolutely amazing. I haven’t been able to see it recently with Shonda denying all of us fans the romance and passion that Mer and Der showed and conveyed all throughout seasons 1 and 2! YAY!
Well, I am sure that this will appease MerDer fans; I know I am!
They have a confirmed 5th season, so I assume that it won’t be this season anything changes, but at least we know where the writers are heading.

I just hope that with plant staying for the rest of the season, they won’t make the season finale be a case where Drek decides whiich of them he choses to be with and we’d have to wait until season 5 for Merder to get back together.. Hi all, I am a huge fan of Grey’s Anatomy and live in Holland. Over here we haven’t seen any episodes of season 4 yet, but reading on the internet shows that things are getting worse for Derek and Meredith. I also would like to see them get together, but that’s up to the writers. All I can say is that they delivered great work in the past and I am sure they will keep on the good work. Thanks to everyone who is working on Grey’s Anatomy.
So Rose is back for all five episodes?!?! So I guess that means that we have to wait until season 5 for Meredith and Derek to be back together “for good.”
Oh Shonda, don’t -toy with me!!! I am content with all of the other characters having the most bizarre love/hate with each other, but as a “dark and twisty” girl I just really need to see them together. Yes, I know they’re fictional, but it gives us hope. Seeing this headline pop up into my feed reader put a huge grin on my face, I can’t wait for the rest of this season and all of next!
Its the ratings talking…I figured the time off would force Shonda to finally be realistic that either she quits messing with MerDer or the show is not going to survive.

I am Thrilled with the news! As a huge Mer/Der fan I have been waiting to hear something like this and to hear it directly from Shonda makes it feel as if It Will Happen. Like PD said, he hoped that this time off since the strike would give the writers and Shonda time to really step back and take a good look at where the show was going. So, evidently that is what Shonda has done and I’m sure it helped by talking to PD! We all know he is a Mer/Der fan and has wanted them to be together since the beginning! He even has said he would like to see them married! There is so many ways they can continue to tell the love story between these two and PD and EP know how much the fans love this couple. Everybody also knows that it is extremely rare that you find a couple like PD/EP that have the chemistry that these two share. The fans have invested so much into this couple and have grown to care and love them since the very beginning and we the fans have become very passionate about them as well. The thoughts of having them apart after all the fans have been through with these two and knowing that they truly love each other, I could not imagine SHonda breaking them up and leaving us hanging. I am so thrilled that is NOT going to happen! So, it is a huge relief to finally hear that Mer/Der will make it after all! (Yey)!!!!!

Yes, this is exciting news - but realize that Shonda’s gotta get through Seasons 5, 6 AND 7. Do you really think that she’s gonna give us the candy that early?
All I’m sayin’ is - let’s look at this happening long term, not in the short term. Season 5 might be character-builiding and healing the dark and twisty and so forth… Wont be until end of season 6 and into season 7 that the clouds will clear in Seattle. And that never happens until July/August

That was such a nice post Claudia. I’m a fan of Mer/Der and am so thrilled by the news and I wish the same for G/I. I think the show runs smoother with couples in lasting stable relationships. There’s enough drama, love and and all the rest in a stable relationship to last a lifetime..so I wish the same for what you want as well:)

I hope it’s true (about Mer and Der getting back together). But the Shonda has fooled the fans before, and I wouldn’t put it past her to say this just to get people watching again, especially after that sucky kiss between Derek and plant. I’ll keep reading the messageboards and avoid watching the show until I hear for sure they are back together.
I am happy for the MerDer fans, but I don,t trust Shonda one bit. She promised us Gizzie fans amazing places and look what she gave us? I will never forgive ehr for that. But I hope she is being honest with you guys, most MerDer fans are really nice.

That’s GREAT!!! Here in Spain we’re almost to end watching season 4 (next week we’ll be watching Crash Into Me, Pt. 2…), and it’s fantastic to hear Shonda saying that AT LEAST MerDer will be making it aaaaaall the way. I remember her saying that season 4 will be sth like Season 2, which was the best for me, by the way… So if it’s like that… I think we won’t see Meredith & Derek together until the season finale… CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THOSE EPISODES, AND TO SEE ROSE OUT OF THE PICTURE FOR GOOD!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, now that we know now that Mer/Der are getting back together….some of those spoilers that I have read hopefully are true! Things like (Mer watching down from the galley at one of Derek’s surgeries and Rose is also watching. Der looks up and sees Mer and Rose thinks he is looking at her at first but she turns around and sees Mer is there and finds that he is looking at …..Mer). I can already imagine this scene……Can’t wait!!

I’m sure Shonda’s writing team will be allowed to milk it rather than grow it because they are clearly simplistic emotionally. Sorry but I just feel very jerked around. The series started with fun, sophistication and wit. The chemistry between Dempsey and Pompeo made it great. Last season & this season so far leaves something to be desired.

Actually, in real life tons of models marry guys who are far far less attractive than them, Katie<s husband is no Brad Pitt. And TR is dating this super super hot guy. I hate Lexziepuke too, more than any couple in the world. George and Izzie belong together and have from season 1, Izzie never loved loser Alex, but she is crazy about George, and George is a million times the man Alex is. You look at Izzie, happy, out-going, who’s had it rough, but has a spirit about her that is hard to ignore. George is cute, smart and sweet as he can be, but he’s sad and while he likes Izzie, he’ll never appreciate her for what she is. Izzie took the time to mourn Denny, who was PERFECT for her and was incredibly thorough about it. George is bouncing from woman to woman trying to forget that he is mourning. Both are sweet with great bedside manner and for that reason, I can see why so many people want to see them together, they’re cute. But, Izzie would be wasted on someone who’s biggest charm is being pathetic. Not that Alex would be any better. Don’t be angry. It’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it. Gizzie-hater… nah, I just don’t see it. I think Shonda has it right with them.

Izzie makes George happy, remember episode 2, and he makes her happy too. I think you have Izzie wrong, she can be sad a lot of the times, and George is the one who gets her out of it and makes her happy. She was never as happy as when she was with him, and same with him. We want them together because they light up next to each other, because they have amazing chemistry, because they have a connection that reaches so deep. Cute is just one of the things they have going on for them, but their love goes way deeper than that and so does our love for them. I am a bit tired of the non-Gizzie fans trying to analyze why we love this couple and always getting it wrong, we all have different reasons to, we don<t have the same opinions like sheep.
I am not quite sure Shonda ahs given up on them. They are promoted all over the place lately, they have been shown with MerDer in the promos kissing and dancing and in romantic settings and there have been polls asking if we want them together made by the show, why would they still ask that if they were over for good, why all the promotion?
I want Gizzie back and will not watch till they are back together where they belong. Shonda said they were each other’s person and they had to go through Denny, Callie, Meredith and Aelx to be ready for each other, it sounds like she thinks they are the real deal like we do.

LOL, Maddie, you believe in polls really? Those things mean nothing because they represent such a little part of the fanbase and because they are so easy to fix. But if polls mean so much to you, what do you say about 50% of the people on this site voting they love Gizzie together, there were 40 000 votes and more, or about the fact that on Teamsugar, 72% of the fans voted they loved Gizzie as a couple. Not everyone knows about the main fansite, in fact I would venture to say places like Fanforum have a lot more activity and members, most Gizzie fans do not post on ABC as this place is majorly anti-Gizzie, so the results do not surprise me in the least. Oh and US magazine asked if people wanted Gizzie together and 60% voted yes. Not that those polls mean anything, but if you want to quote one vote where Gizzie is doing badly, I can quote you several where they are doing great.
If I were the Gizzie haters, I would be more worried that the show asked the question, because why would they ask if Gizzie was over for good and not an option anymore and I would also be worried that Gizzie is still getting as much or more promotion than MerDer.
EW posted the MerDer news, and like a good two third of the comments were anti-MerDer, we don’t give a man about MerDer and the others were all we want Gizzie back, I think there were more letters asking Gizzie back than talking about precious MerDer, and the comments that were not about Gizzie, well a lot were about how they hated Merder.
I seriously don’t think ABC will base itself on a poll of a few thousand people to see how millions of people feel, especially given how easy those polls are to spam.
Ratings are the only reliable thing, and the truth is the ratings for the episodes where Gizzie were together, notably episodes 6 hot sex and episode 7 where we were sure that after the bad sex, we would have great sex, were two of the highest rated episodes of the season.
After episode 8, where it was clear Gizzie would end, and I know many Gizzie fans, including me quit, well the ratings went down 5 MILLION people, 5 MILLION, that is huge and the two episodes after where Gizzie was over (not officially but we all knew it) and the episode after their breakup were the lowest rated episodes of Grey’s history. Ending Gizzie did not up those ratings, it got them down, and now the Gizzie haters are desperate to prove Gizzie is hated so they are spamming their little hearts away. See how you automatically threw this in the Gizzie fans’ faces, that is desperation, that is all you guys have to hold onto, spamming polls to make it seems you are the majority, except TPTB do not take polls seriously because they know most fans do not go on the Net.
Over on Fanpop, Gizzie is winning favorite Grey couple and this Lexzie fans went all over the Net begging people to please vote because she did not want Shonda to think Gizzie had the majority fanbase, that is how desperate the Gizzie haters are.

You can’t tear true love apart. Yeah you can love other people but, once you have that one that has your heart. NO other love is as sweet no matter how much you want it to be. I read this article today about PD. He is continually doing things that make me love him even more. He is such a great guy. I had not heard until I read this article about him helping with the opening of a cancer center in Maine. It is actually named after him. I don’t believe Shonda at all. She has been known to lie, the whole Gizzie will be going amazing places stuff she served us Gizzie fans and we got terrible things.

Well, I’m going to say that I can’t stand Mer/Der and I hope that Shonda will reconsider and break them up for good. I started looking forward to watching the last few episodes before the strike because of the potential love interest between Derek and Rose and I believe that even a diehard Mer/Der fan would watch the show just out of curiousity (spelling?). I had written this on another blog, and I’m going to write it again. For those of you who call Rose a Mcskanky, slutty whore, I would like you to rethink what has been written in the past. As it is written, who was the one who had all these one night stands? Also, as it was written, who was the one who did the McNasty with McDreamy at the end of Season II, knowing full well that he was a married man? MEREDITH. So, who’s the slutty whore? Rose may have kissed Derek (which by the way he made the first move on), but no sex yet, so far. Plus Derek isn’t married to Meredith, and Meredith doesn’t seem to want him, because if she really did, she wouldn’t hesitate, issues or no issues. That girl thinks of herself and that’s all she thinks about. So as far as I am concerned, he’s free rain, and if I had an opportunity with a Derek type in real life, I’d go for it too. Sorry, all you Mer/Der fan, but I hope they don’t get back together because it will be unrealistic. I don’t think I can stand watching their annoying, stupid relationship.
I’m sooooo excited! I read a comment from Shonda on an tv guide report that Mer/ Der will be back together for good “BY THE END OF THE SEASON” Also there will be 2 very hot guys that are together and in the military stopping in to SGH; and a very passionate kiss is in store between the two!

I recently read a TV guide article on Grey’s Anatomy return. There was an interview with Shonda about Mer and Der being together for “GOOD”.
Shonda: “I am pretty dedicated to the idea that they are to be together for good this season”
“What’s going to be interesting is how she gets her act together , and how they decide that this is it.” Are those wedding bells we hear?
Shonda: “I did not say there is going to be a wedding” “Or a ring. Althoough I did not say there wasn’t going to be a ring.”

I pray the writers don’t make us wait till the last episode and have us hanging again with MerDer love situation. We want them together NOW! I have gotten so tired of them going back and forth over the years, i was about to give up on watching the show. Please we want them together now. Rose better not be in a love triangle for 5 episodes. I’ll find something else to amuse myself on TV.

This is like music to my ears. I really hope Shonda Rhimes stay true to her word and make it happand. (we have been telling you this forever!) Grey’s Anatomy just wouldn’t seem right if Mer/ Der is “seeing other people”. I think this would be a great step for the show and Mer/ Der. even patrick dempsey said he would like to see them get back together and mabe get MARRIED!
