"My goal is to get Meredith [Ellen Pompeo] and Derek [Patrick Dempsey] together for good and let them try to figure out what it is to be in a relationship in the future." - Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.
The executive producer's words may offer welcome relief for fans exhausted by months - years - of Meredith and Derek getting closer, yet always driven apart.
"That is something that time off [during the writers' strike] really gave me some perspective on â" whether or not we could actually do it, how we could do it, that it would be amazing to watch how that works," Rhimes said.
Will the much-maligned Meredith and Derek love story finally be repaired?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shonda Rhimes said she had dinner with Dempsey and "we talked about all of this. As actors, they're very invested in Derek and Meredith. Ellen and I are getting together Monday."
Even the Grey's Anatomy cast itself is excited by this news.
When told of the MerDer development, T.R. Knight exclaimed, "Oh, wow, I didn't know that! I guess Meredith and Derek are gonna smooch again!"
On a slightly less ecstatic note, Knight said he is busy getting over a bad cold before heading back to work next week: "I got the crud that's been going around," he said as he drove home from a doctor's appointment yesterday. "It was like, Body is crashing, you've got a week and a half to be sick before work starts, so go."
Also coming up when Grey's Anatomy returns April 24:
- Lauren Stamile, who plays McDreamy's latest potential love interest, Nurse Rose, will return for all five new spring episodes.
- Elizabeth Reaser, as Jane Doe / Ava / Rebecca, will be back for three.

I always knew Meredith and Derek would be together by the end, but for Shonda Rhimes to actually say it's going to happen, and relatively soon is awesome! Amen to that!

Yes! This is so awesome to me! I always wanted to see this, and being a HUGE merder fan this makes me ecstatic beyond belief. To see them together soons make me long for the last five episodes of this season. Dangit, Shonda, you have got me addicted so much more now that mer/der are going to be together. To see Ellen's and Patrick's chemistry together once again will be absolutely amazing. I haven't been able to see it recently with Shonda denying all of us fans the romance and passion that Mer and Der showed and conveyed all throughout seasons 1 and 2! YAY!

Well, I am sure that this will appease MerDer fans; I know I am!
They have a confirmed 5th season, so I assume that it won't be this season anything changes, but at least we know where the writers are heading.

I just hope that with plant staying for the rest of the season, they won't make the season finale be a case where Drek decides whiich of them he choses to be with and we'd have to wait until season 5 for Merder to get back together.. I'm sorry but Shonda messed up with my head to much for me to be ecstatic with what could be the best news any avid grey's fan would want to hear.

YEAY finally!
So now we don't have to worry when we see Derek hanging around with Rose in the first episode(s), because we know MerDer will be back together! Great news :D
What is Rebecca going to do? I don't like her character... Alex & Izzie belong together.

Hi all, I am a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy and live in Holland. Over here we haven't seen any episodes of season 4 yet, but reading on the internet shows that things are getting worse for Derek and Meredith. I also would like to see them get together, but that's up to the writers. All I can say is that they delivered great work in the past and I am sure they will keep on the good work. Thanks to everyone who is working on Grey's Anatomy.

So Rose is back for all five episodes?!?! So I guess that means that we have to wait until season 5 for Meredith and Derek to be back together "for good."

Oh Shonda, don't -toy with me!!! I am content with all of the other characters having the most bizarre love/hate with each other, but as a "dark and twisty" girl I just really need to see them together. Yes, I know they're fictional, but it gives us hope. Seeing this headline pop up into my feed reader put a huge grin on my face, I can't wait for the rest of this season and all of next!

Its the ratings talking...I figured the time off would force Shonda to finally be realistic that either she quits messing with MerDer or the show is not going to survive.

I believe it when I see it. But I think too we have 2 wait till season 5 to see them back 2gether. Good 4 shonda 2 take fans thoughts in consideration,that's what makes shows successful. Can't wait 4 april!!!!
