Patrick Dempsey Speaks on Meredith-Derek Relationship
Not only does it look more and more as if the Hollywood writers' strike may cap Season Four of Grey's Anatomy at only 11 episodes, but leading man Patrick Dempsey now says the relationship that has kept viewers on the edge of their seats for three years may have finally reached its expiration date.
Patrick Dempsey tells TV Guide:
"The next couple of episodes are going to be completely different with what happens with Meredith and Derek... I'm looking forward to that change and that movement."
Dempsey, who was interviewed by TV Guide exclusively while he promoted his new movie, Enchanted, in Los Angeles November 4, says he is ready for his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, to move on â" potentially to the new character (reportedly to be played by Lauren Stamile) set to be brought in as his love interest.
"I just want the characters to continue to grow, and to work things out realistically," Patrick Dempsey said. "Derek and Meredith's relationship has gone as far as it can go. I don't think it's going to go unless she commits to marrying him or goes into therapy and starts working on herself. We'll have a cliffhanger with this last show and there will be a resolve that seems to be permanent."

This is terrible...I am making a petition to keep them together! Please sign
http://www.petitionspot.com/signature/merderforever
It may not help but it can't hurt!
November 6th, 2007 10:37 AM
This doesn't even make me angry anymore. I'm ready to move on too...from this show.

May i ask something? What exactly will be the effects of the writers' strike? For example there will be broadcasted only 11 episodes from season 4? Like having a mini-season? What will be the long term consequences for the show? Is there any chance to compromise? I'm from Greece and i can't be fully informed, so please tell me!
Now, as far as Mer/Der is concered, i believe that we're gonna see them together again and happy in the last season of the show! The "Ross/Rachel form" has already worked once. This is the worst possible scenario for these two but i think that we should have faith and be patient! But the writers should also be careful because the continuous love triangles and complexions gonna ruin the whole show...
Thank you in advance!

oh my god could he have said it any plainer? It's dead. Even he is sick of it. Well that's it for me aswell. Bye bye Grey's. They were the only reason i watched. After the drivel that was last season i honestly thought that this would be better. I'm gone now. Bye bye

There is really no point in saying anything anymore... so i am not going to even waste my time.
November 6th, 2007 11:11 AM
Well, what more can I say than: I hook up with you. sad, but, I'm not willing to watch such rubbish anymore... that's a real waste of time
November 6th, 2007 11:31 AM
ok everybody, lets really think about this...I'm still trying soooooo hard to be optimistic here!
Now, Patrick didn't say they were going to split up, he just said that he wanted to see them work through things realistically and for their characters to grow and the only way that would happen was if Meredith went to a therapist for her issues or told Derek she would marry him.
He just thinks (as we all do) that something needs to happen with the growth of these characters. They are at a stand still and there is nowhere else for them to go together if Meredith don't commit to marry him or at least get the help she needs.
So, I guess he was just telling us that it comes down to either she commits or she doesn't and that will be how the 11th episode will leave us until next season!
So basically, we the viewers (diehard Mer/Der fans) will be on the edge of our seats through the next few episodes to see what Shonda has decided to do with this couple! I truly can't believe she would break them up after ALL that they have been through together! If she does, I'll never understand why she couldn't have at least one stable couple on this show.
As optimistic as I have tried so hard to be, I thought to myself, why would Patrick even make those comments unless either they are breaking up or was it just to make us viewers that much more intrigued to what happens to this couple. I don't know..... but, I really don't think I can watch either one of these characters with someone else after all the HOPE we have put into them! And Shonda in her podcasts has been so positive about them as a couple...I just don't understand where she is going with this. SO, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. What do you guys think? Do you see where I'm coming from?
November 6th, 2007 11:37 AM
I don't know what the strike will do on the long term to this show, and I don't want to wait. I want MerDer together right now!!!
November 6th, 2007 11:47 AM
Patrick said in an interview weeks ago he wants Derek and Meredith together. Now he said he is ready to move on ............
I agree with kathy - I think they did not splitt!
So many fans are in love with them, I don't think Shonda will ruin her show!
November 6th, 2007 11:53 AM
Optimistic?Optimistic? how in god's name can we be optimistic? For three years we've been waitin for this couple to get together fully. Damn them and their chemistry. They're the only believable couple on TV ever. For writers to mess with that sheer beauty is a disgrace to both Dempsey and Pompeo and their ability. If one more goddamn person compares them to ross and rachel from friends i'll go crazy. They have so much more depth than that. This is unreal. At this stage i think that the writers of this show actually WANT it to go down drain.
November 6th, 2007 12:04 PM
Damn I DON'T WANT DER & MER TO BREAK UP FOR EVER :(
There's only one couple with such a great chemistry: MerDer!!
What the hell is Shonda doing? Didn't she tell us season 4 would be a happy season, like season 1 & 2??
:(

Wow..Patrick Dempsey should really watch what he says. I realize he was at a premiere and was speaking quickly when asked about Mer/Der, but wow..with the writers strike possibly making GA lose any momentum it's had, combined with slipping ratings, he really shouldn't just HAND fans a reason not to care to tune back in when or if the show returns. So dissapointed in reading this it isn't funny and as much as Rhimes has heard from fans about this it seems ego has taken over any type of reasonable thinking when it comes to Grey's. Gonna watch it until the season ends and if the two aren't together, I'm gonna move on. Love the whole show, but that couple is the heart and what drives me to the show. I have no interest in themn suddenly being "just friends" after he breaks her heart yet again and especially with what journalists are calling the "anti Meredith" I love Meredith. I don't want to see Derek with the exact opposite of her. Dempsey should really refrain from negative Mer/Der comments, but my fear is he's said too much already. Damage done McDreamy.
November 6th, 2007 12:33 PM
it would be really great if the writers were able to work it out and we got a full season... also would be amazing if meredith and derek got married, no matter how long the show goes. let's hope it'll be worked out!!!!!!!!!
November 6th, 2007 12:51 PM
Claire,
that was exactly the first thing that came to my mind when i read that article.. dempsey has said too much maybe out of frustration. Hence no matter what he shouldnt have dropped that kind of bomb shell when he knew perfectly well how sensitive fans are about merder. I would like to know just how Shonda is going to tackle this mess.
November 6th, 2007 1:06 PM
are they saying the season is over already seriously? why does this always happen to me first i start to watch gilmore girls and it ends before i can even watch a whole season so when that ends i start to watch greys anatomy and now this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 6th, 2007 1:34 PM
oh please! The writers aren't going to drop the relationship between Meredith and Derek, Patrick and Ellen have far too much chemistry to throw away!
and if Meredith and Derek do permanently break up, I'm done with the show- those two are/were the only thing keeping me!
...okay, that and the amazing surguries!!!
The show is/was great, I put 10 bucks on the writers keeping Mer/Der together because otherwise the show will end soon...and I really hope it doesn't.
November 6th, 2007 1:40 PM
Oh something is tellin me PD is in trouble! Seriously? 'Derek and Meredith's relationship has gone as far as it can go'. That says it all really, doesn't it? He continues to insinuate that it's meredith's fault and she won't commit and needs therapy. I mean are you freaking kiddin me? This is all meredith's fault? Ok it takes two people to get to a certain stage in a relationship. Derek is blowin hot and cold all the time. Marry me or i'll date. Let's have sex, oh now i want more. You need to grow, oh by the way you're a freak carrying your mother's ashes even though she's makin progress. I mean he started this S and M crap. Mer was really tryin to break up wit him and he literally jumped on her.Now he's goin to date the anti meredith? Not so dreamy. I mean do the writer's hate Ellen Pompeo or something? Oh and isn't it obvious what the cliffhanger is already? Derek will date this Lauren Stamille. Meredith will get jealous and when she finally realises her feelings and tells Derek he's moved on from the love of his life and does so for twenty episodes until he realises his mistake and goes back to mer. This time she's moved onto someone she deserves. It's sad but that show had so much potential. The soul is gone now that MerDer is. And we're left with Gizzie. Lovely. I'm so gone.

i just have one thing to say,
all us die hard grey's anatomy fans are sick of the all the ppl who keep "threatening" us that they're gonna stop watching the show.
like this BYE GREY'S!!! guy, how annoying could he/she be??
i will continue to adore grey's anatomy for as long as i live even if it turns into a cooking show!!!
now, who's with me on this?????
what we need right now; and more importantly than the MerDer situation which is catastrophic btw, is to find some way to get those writers back on their writing butts and demand a normal 23 episode season, 11 EPISODES JUST WON'T DO!!!!!
us viewers need to take some action,
maybe we should mail peanuts to ABC just like the Jericho fans did when they canceled the show after 1 season, ANY IDEAS????
November 6th, 2007 2:18 PM
who caaares if u stop watching the show,
we still want to!!!
leave this forum and stop bitching already!!
November 6th, 2007 2:18 PM
I feel so mad ! sad ! Shonda hasn't got it yet or what???
Let's stop watching the show(turn off the tv or change channels) at the end of ep 408 just when der has his first date with stamile so that ABC and the producers see the ratings droping dramastically.
And let's hope the strike won't last longer than a week or 2 so that the writers quickly make things easier between Mer&der. Most viewers have been expected it for 3 years. Last season was a mess just when everyone thought it will be all about building a real Merder love couple.
Without them together, grey's doesn't exist like carrie and Mr Big, Rachel and Ross, and other successful ten year tv shows based on the chemistry of a man and a woman.
November 6th, 2007 2:18 PM
i agree with kathy. gosh, i really hope they get back together. and this writers strike thing is really starting to piss me off.
November 6th, 2007 2:20 PM
also agree with cristinaismyworld 100%!
November 6th, 2007 2:28 PM
i don't think the stirke will have any sort of effect on next year's season 5, but as rumoured it may be the reason that season 4 is only 11 episodes this year, which makes this the worst year of my life!
&%$*!?
November 6th, 2007 2:51 PM
What i don't get is Shonda building a relationship for 3 years to be for nothing! Did she forget her original recipe for sucess??? I WILL NOT WATCH GREY'S IF THIS IS TRUE! I WILL NOT
November 6th, 2007 3:04 PM
They are just playing with our minds again. You have to read it with a clear head. Were so used to them messing with us we asume the worst. It would be totally insane for them to completrely break up MerDer. I believe it takes them all to make the show what it is but MerDer are an important part of what keeps people watching every week. Patrick and Ellen have made it very clear what they want and so have the fans so let's not panic just yet. Remember Shonda likes mind games.
