Round Table: "A Change is Gonna Come"
Grey's Anatomy Insider is happy to announce the return of the Round Table!
While fans gather in our forum to discuss each character and story line, our staff members will come together each Friday to analyze key moments, developments and thoughts from each Grey's Anatomy episode.
Topics for "A Change is Gonna Come" range from Ms. Lexie Grey to Alex's new look, to some of the night's dramatic rescues and what we felt was missing ...
1. Should Derek be Mark's friend?
McCritic: Yes. Mark knows how to reattach body parts. Maybe he could show Derek how to grow some ... you know.
iheartizzie: Hells no. Homeboy slept with Addison and tried to get Meredith in the sack. Don't buy the "it's just Mark" defense. Guy is bad news. Sexy, though.
AndYouveGotTheHair: Ideally, no, but with Burke and Addison gone and Meredith a little spacey at times, he's gotta hang with someone. I really miss Burke.
2. He said "I love you, too," but do George and Izzie stand a chance?
iheartizzie: Regardless of how you feel about O'Mizzie as a couple, their cover hasn't been blown yet. The surely negative backlash they face is going to put an entirely different spin on things, I believe.
AndYouveGotTheHair: I know I'm in the minority, but I don't despise these two as a couple. There is good chemistry there, great acting on behalf of both Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight. Sure, George is married and Callie hasn't done anything to deserve this, but you can't control who you fall for. George clearly wants to do the right thing... he just doesn't know what that is, it seems.
McCritic: Not if there's a God in heaven. Or a writer with a quarter of a brain.
3. Save of the Day: Derek / Cristina with the spinal cord patient, Izzie with the deer, or Lexie with George's psyche?
AndYouveGotTheHair: You have to hand it to the new Ms. Grey on this one. Without going over the line with someone she doesn't even know, she got George to stop whining in a way that really was kind of awesome.
McCritic: Lexie. It's nice to see one Grey sister can worry about more than just herself. (Note to Meredith lovers: BRING IT!)
iheartizzie: Gotta go with Isobel. While it was the least remarkable in terms of skill (how much research does it take to deliver a massive electric shock), that deer was the cutest of the creatures needing saving. George has nothing on a real-life Bambi. Also, how great was Izzie's reaction when it worked?
4. Alex's facial hair: Yay or Nay?
McCritic: A stronger "Nay" than the answer a horse gives when asked if he wants to visit the glue factory.
iheartizzie: Eh?
AndYouveGotTheHair: Yay!
5. What was your least favorite part of the premiere?
AndYouveGotTheHair: The way Lexie chose to drop the latest bomb on Mer. In the middle of a medical crisis! As if anyone would be so self-absorbed as to do that. Then again, her surname is Grey ...
McCritic: The status of the Chief and his relationship with Adele. Didn't he realize last season he needed to dedicate himself to his marriage? Didn't these two make up during the best moment of the season finale? Wasn't there a drawn-out story line focused on his replacement?
iheartizzie: The episode's title. Instead of "A Change is Gonna Come," they missed a great opportunity to go with "Change is Gonna Come... Out of That Dude's Abdomen!" Come on, Shonda. There was, what, $2.35 in there?

I am totally stumped on the status of Chief's marriage too!
And can I say congratulations and thank you to whoever writes the episode guides, they ate OUTSTANDING--much better than the ones on the ABC site!

Shonda, you rock. I am just in awe of your creativity. I liked the season premier; the writing is still outstanding..excellent work, you rock, girl, you rock!!

Reading all the comments on different boards, I definitely don't think the Gizzie fans are in the minority anymore. There is a little poll asking people which couple they want to make it and Gizzie is coming second with a lot of votes, and you can only vote once.
There is also a lot of sites dedicated to them now.
The Gizzie fanbase is on the rise and not stopping soon.
I think things will be very rough for them, but that is what will detrmine how solid their love is, and I think in the end, they will survive.
It depends on whether Shonda lets herself influenced by the haters, which would be a shame because first of all, it is her show, and second many people are rooting for Gizzie, but if she doesn't, I believe we will see them emerge together, but it might take all season for that.
This triangle is not going anywhere.

Not sure Gizzie fans are such the minority, everyone I know offline is crazy about these two together and I am seeing more and mroe fans on the Net every day.
The haters are just more vocal that is all.

I liked the episode, loved the deer thing, so Izzie, I loved her for saving bambi. And that deer living was like a symbol of george and Izzie surviving. That gave me so much hope.
The i love you moment was the best moment of the night for me.
I agree there are not more haters than fans and that they just scream louder.
On another board, I saw someone say she had been a Gizzie fan since day 1 but she was scared of being insulted by the haters and had not admitted her love for them before, but now she wanted to.
I wonder how many people are really fans but not speaking up because of this, because most people that I know who watch the show don't post on the Internet and they love George and Izzie very much.
So I have difficulty believing the Internet and the offline fans would feel so differently about this couple.

I post on a site called fanforum and the george and Izzie fan thread there is the biggest in terms of post and the second biggest in terms of fans (behind Meredith and Derek). There are about 230 George and Izzie fans posting there and we have almost finished 51 threads on them.
I also post on the George O'Malley and Izzie Stevens's Livejournal community and there are 424 George and Izzie fans on there. It is the biggest couple community for Grey on that site.
There are also sites dedicated to them.
I think the misconception about the george and Izzie fans being the minority comes from the fact we usually are not that vocal (well, or we weren't, until lies came up about us not existing) and because we stayed mostly in places dedicated to George and Izzie. That is because some of the haters can be quite scary. I had some threatening physical violence on me and other Gizzie fans, which is just plain nuts!
The haters are always the loudest, that doesn't mean they are the majority.

I love george and Izzie, they are the best thing on the show for me, so I truly hope Shonda gives them a chance. Becaue without them, I don't see myself watching thta much.

Damn Derek just loves her so much :) I loved the end of the episode! MerDer, Gizzie and such a lovely music!
September 28th, 2007 1:54 PM
My favorite couple is still Derek and Meredith; they obviously still have feelings for each other. And I know Meredith has had a lot on her plate but I hope the "old Meredith" comes back.. I did not like who she turned into last season.
George and Izzy are okay together.. better than George and Callie.. but I really feel bad for Callie. She also shouldn't have gotten the Chief Resident job, Bailey should have! Even if he did it for her in the long-run!
And gosh I hope Derek and Sloan become friends again!!!
September 28th, 2007 1:57 PM
P.S. I forgot about Christina! I LOVE the fact that she has a heart so far this season. Last night she was a mix of cold to the interns and hot about her patient living for his family... I feel badly for her.

Dude, I was so happy with the ending scene! At first, when Meredith was standing looking to and from Lexie and Derek, I thought they were going to end it there just like in the season 2 finale with Finn and Derek. But then they went in the on-call room.....
Did anyone else notice when Meredith was answereing Derek's questions of how she's not ready for this, and she's breaking up with him, she wasn't making eye contact?!..........it shows that she doesn't want to break up with him.....YAY! THEY'RE IN LOVE! (sigh) I wish the whole show was Derek and Meredith together and happy all the time!!!
I have to be honest, I was definitley not happy when George and Izzie slept together, but, surprisingly, I was smiling when George said I love you too.....unless I was still smiling from the MER/DER moment!!!!
AHHHH! GREY'S IS BACK!!!
September 28th, 2007 2:10 PM
I don't ant callie to be pregnat. She only wants to save her marraige. She sees him sliping away.
I want izzie to be pregnant, that would really put the pressure on george. he said that he loved her but that might get them to go out in the open faster.
I do feel bad for callie. she is not respected by the other resedents, wants to be pregnant and george is going to leave her. They should make her misrible enough to join Addison on private practice, her and addison are better than her and my george anyway!
September 28th, 2007 3:35 PM
I also am probably in the minority but I LOVE Izzie and George together as well. Maybe it is the fact that they are such good friends in real life but watching them together is amazing. From the first season they have been each other's best friend and rock. I also for one do NOT think they everyone should feel sorry for Callie. You reap what you sow. She was WAY more into George than he was with her and then when they were on a break she sleeps with Mark. (does anyone remember that??) Also when George's dad died and George proposed Callie should have known that he (George) was not in the right mindset to be making decison like spending the rest of your life with someone. (He went from trying to have sex with her all of the hospital to proposing marriage? Would that not be a red flag to someone? Yes, she may have good intentions at heart but she needs to earn the respect of the other people in the hospital, not demand it.
September 28th, 2007 3:37 PM
I like george and izzie-they have such good chemistry and seem to belong together-much more than george and callie who seem kind of awkward around each other.
but i really like callie so i hope she can somehow end up happy too!!
September 28th, 2007 4:54 PM
GAfreak Callie can be happy too, she can go to private practice with addison
September 28th, 2007 7:09 PM
Search grey's anatomy lov/ addict on youtube. MerDer on only doing sex and mockery.
Alex is attacked by "ava's" husband and the baby goes missing. and better yet callie is blamed for it.
George tells izzie he has to end it with callie and at the end callie is cring and says "don't say anything not tonight"
September 28th, 2007 7:09 PM
S&M = SEX & MUNGERY AUSTRALIA
CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK
September 28th, 2007 7:24 PM
Don't like too many stories at the same time!! also so many commercials!! yikes!!
Izzie is annoying!! cockey!! The name of the serie is Grey's no Stevens'...
Burke was important... who is going to give POWER to Xtina??? or the rest of the girls!
The serie has to go back to its roots: being different from ER!!! (showing the arm cut was awful!!!)
George should explode!!
I want to see more time between MerDer!!!!!
UF! feel better after speaking up!
September 28th, 2007 7:49 PM
GREY's will drop in the ratings without Burke. I mean, can you really expect the show to survive the perpetual meanderings of stupid Izzie (who falls in love with somebody different EVERY season and is a HUGE flake), dumb George (who's obviously gay on the show, too), and flighty Grey who has more drama than ABC Daytime. Please. The writers seriously need to re-examine the show. The Premiere sucked, and I'm one less viewer you'll have this season. All the more reason to watch NBC.

Avid watcher but this Thursday needed help. Maybe its me but seems that its tough enough to keep up with maybe a dozen characters but now each of the 5-6 major characters have 4-5 new characters to follow them around and I really think they had to have a better way to treat them then like the trash they did. Hope that gets better. And what's with Izzy saving a deers life. A little too much "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" to shock a deer and he stands right up and gets taken away to who knows where. Is this the same fiance' killing Izzy that we all know and love (just kidding). Well i hope they get it better next week. To the writers, look at the shows that made it for years and years. A few dozen main characters and a few repeat characters that keep returning every once in a while to keep us sane and thats it, Look at MASH. Just like that KISS simple and build up. Hate to loose Grey's Anatomy because it gets too complicated and doesn't run together well.

The scene with Mark and Derek was hysterical!! Both actors did a great job at keeping a straight face...I would've lost it!
I absolutely love George and Izzie and most people I know do too. I can't wait to see where this storyline is going.
As far as the spinal cord patient, how does a man who is basically decapitated other than skin and muscle have any brain activity to blink to answer questions?!
September 28th, 2007 10:34 PM
Another point I forgot to make in reference to I ♥ Gizzie's note that "Alex is attacked by 'Ava's' husband and the baby goes missing"...that is not Ava's husband. Ava's husband was played by Jason London, who this man is clearly not, and Ava had a baby girl. The man in the clip says he loves his "son."
September 28th, 2007 11:13 PM
I also love george and Izzie, and no longer think we are the minority. They are just so cute together and they ave amazing chemistry together, which I was shocked about given their very close friendship, but TR and Katie said their close friendship is the reason why doing love scenes is so easy for them.
They do a fantastic job because they have me totally believing that George and Izzie have fallen completely in love with each other and that maybe they were always a little bit in love with one another.
I feel bad for Callie but some marriages are just a mistake that need to be ended.
September 29th, 2007 12:35 AM
I missed the first episode, but have read a few recaps of it & it sounds like I didn't miss much.
September 29th, 2007 3:22 AM
I hope the writers of the show don't read these comments and let themselves be influenced. They should continue the story in the same way they have been telling it until now. It's perfect! We just have to be patient.
