The Grey's Anatomy Death Watch: Handicapping the Field

By now, we've all heard the rumors from E! Online's Kristin Veitch and the ominous, foreboding hints from Shonda Rhimes. While you can only put too much stock in spoilers, we can't escape the weight of this bombshell:

Someone will die before this three-part story arc is over.

Now, it's the opinion of the Insider that Shonda & Co. are yanking our chains a bit. What if someone dies, then is revived five minutes later? Could it be that there's a death at SGH that shocks us, but a primary cast member isn't the one who passes away?

Who the heck knows. That's why it's so fun to watch! If we had to put money on it, we'd bet that the terrific ensemble cast remains intact. But just for fun, we've put together some odds on who we think is most likely to enter the great beyond, if that's indeed what's happening tonight...

Ellis GreyEllis Grey - Even
Hey, we've all gotta go sometime.

Izzie Stevens - 3:2
We know Denny comes back, right? And that he's not the only one we see? Could Izzie be reunited with Denny Duquette in the afterlife?

Just a theory. As terrific as Izzie is on the show, she's been lost from day one. Stevens being killed while trying to save the patient trapped under the car would almost be appropriate, and that ferry boat she's on looks like it could explode at any moment.

Richard Webber - 5:2
He had planned to retire anyway, is reeling from Adele leaving him and has lately contemplated his legacy at Seattle Grace. He's also a little older. Dr. Webber passing away would make the race for Chief of Surgery even more intense, and it's a development that certainly isn't that big of a stretch (though we really hope he stays)!

Meredith Grey - 3:1
We really can't see Meredith dying. However, she's the only one missing - and sinking in the ocean - at the beginning of tonight's episode.

Derek Shepherd - 5:1
Okay, there's no way Shonda would take McDreamy from us. Would she? We'd put the odds at 10,000:1, except for Rhimes' ominous warning that the events tonight and next week will be the last thing we'd ever expect.

This would qualify.

Mark SloanMark Sloan - 10:1
He'd be the easiest to get rid of in terms of continuity. Steaminess aside, Mark hasn't brought much to the table since he joined Seattle Grace as a full-time attending.

But he already faked us out with by almost quitting once, and we aren't convinced they'd have him leave the show without him contributing more to it first. Odds are, the best is yet to come from Eric Dane's Dr. Sloan.

Alex Karev - 20:1
He's becoming a bigger, better person, and a more complex character every episode. Besides his budding infatuation with Addison, Alex has really grown as a medical practitioner. The only problem could be if he keeps putting himself in harm's way to rescue people. That pylon was heavy!

Nurse Olivia - 25:1

She'd be easily replaced, that's for sure, and syphilis can be deadly if untreated. But surely there's some life left in this character - and would dispensing of such a minor, recurring bit player result in all this hype? If so, we want our money back.

George O'Malley - 50:1
Yes, we heard the rumor that T.R. Knight wants out. But we don't buy it. The transformation from the bumbling, grieving George to the more confident, married Dr. O'Malley is just beginning. He's been one of the focal points of the third season, and the death of Bambi would cripple everyone else. Meredith puts the Grey in Grey's Anatomy, but George is the glue.

Callie Torres - 75:1
Maybe a month ago it would have worked. But they're not going to kill George's father and his wife in the span of a few weeks.

Preston Burke - 100:1
A lot of people have speculated that Dr. Burke is the frontrunner in this undesirable category following the Isaiah Washington controversy. We highly doubt it. If he were going to be removed, it would have happened already. We also don't know how long ago these episodes were filmed. With a major life event on the horizon, and having already been shot at the end of Season 2, Preston seems an unlikely candidate to go.

Addison Montgomery - 125:1

She's still one of the characters whose life we know the least about outside Seattle Grace, and one of the emerging leaders of the surgical staff. All we know of Addison is her romantic entanglements. Our guess is the writers have a lot more planned for the ex-Shepherd.

CristinaCristina Yang - 500:1
There's not a single reason we can think of why we would lose Cristina. Every member of the cast is great, but week in and week out, she remains one of the show's most compelling, entertaining characters.

Miranda Bailey - 2,000:1
Strong but all too human, she's the heir apparent to the Chief of Surgery position down the line, and the interns need their Nazi like never before. Besides, Chandra Wilson won the SAG Award!

  1. Vicki Says:

Im going with Izzie, if you noticed the scenes where she is working on the guy under the car, they keep moving the camera on the fluid dripping....gasoline perhaps? And if you dont see it dripping, you hear it dripping. It's Izzie - makes sense with the whole Denny thing.

  2. Kayte Says:

I'm going to go with in the order of Ellis, Meredith and Izzy, cuz I agree with the girl above. They have shown gas dripping and they wouldn't show it if it didn't have any revelance to a show that is only an hour long. With Meredith, she is in the water and clips show that she is sinking yet at the same time showing derek as the one that finds out that she is missing. How long between that and him finding her in the water, we don't know. And besides, Shonda Rhimes has stated that she "isn't playing within the rules of tv" which could mean that she is willing to kill off a title, main charactor like Meredith. don't want to see it but.....an as for Ellis, she had her lucid moment- like with the gas, they wouldn't introduce that if it didn't have any revelance to the storyline of greys.....

  3. McDreamyMmMmM Says:

Ellis Grey. 100% is going to die. I'm not just hoping that because she is ruining Mer's life...and relationship...but because all of the facts point to her...

    1. She is older
    2. She has alzheimer's
    3. Just read what i capitalized

DEREK: "Your Mother! Look, your Mother was lucid and she said some things, and now she's-"
MEREDITH: "Gone! And everything's back to normal, it's not a big deal."
DEREK: "YEAH, EXCEPT SHES HAVING HEART SURGERY TODAY..."
    MEREDITH: [sighs]
DEREK: "Hey. Do you want me to talk to the Chief? I know you have the Triage thing today, but he'll give you the day off."
MEREDITH: "Stop. I do not need rescuing."
DEREK: "You would've drowned in the bathtub had I not been there."

The easiest way to kill someone off is a complication during surgery...

  4. seattlegrace98101 Says:

I think it would be extremely tempting for SR to be the first person in TV history to kill off a title character ... that kind of thing would be talked about for decades, especially if it works and somehow the show keeps going and is just as good. But that does not mean it will happen. If their are two deaths this sweeps and one will not stick, Mer's seems like a good contender for the latter.

  5. Greys Anatomy rules! Says:

I agree, i think that Ellis is gonna die, sadly but yes. No one else can die! Im scared to watch it tonight!

  6. tobi j Says:

The name of the show IS STILL "Grey's Anatomy",
so Meredith's odds should be higher than Bailey's.
As well, Ellis Grey will die at a time other than this major chaos. It would waste a wonderful subplot of Meredith dealing with the loss of her Mother for the 3rd time and the realization that she never knew her really.

  7. bruce jakubowski Says:

    Never gonna do it!
They're already making hx with authentic sxs,
great drama, and awesome, virtually unknown actors! Why kill off the STAR and namesake!
No way! Meredith's Mom won't die tonight either; the writers will wait.

  8. Ann Says:

i vote for Olivia, we saw her on that last episode with the toxic blood affecting her. I've also read speculation that she is the pregnant girl with the crushed face.... but she has been around from the beginning and so that leaves that option open. just a thought for speculation!

  9. Kristin Says:

Yes, why would they sho the gasoline dripping ifit wasn't relevant?

I'm going with Izzie & Ellis. Mer can't die. Mer dies, show dies. End speech.

  10. PINK MIST Says:

Everyone at my work knows how big of a fan I am..I have had at least 15 people come up to me today asking me whats going to happen tonight and if they are going to kill off Mer and if I have heard anything...lol....yeah I have definitly heard of something...Guess we won't really know for another...ugh...ANOTHER 6 HOURS AND 7 MIN....CAN THIS DAY GO ANY SLOWER?!?!??!?!

  11. chrissy Says:

    hey guys!
can u imagine,i have to wait till tom to see g.a cause wer i live its waaay back in season 2!! marideth can't die.If she dies the show dies!shes the main caharcter..its all about HER life. I think Burk.Espec since i heard he was going to get kicked off the show.:( but i dont know..and i cant wait!

  12. lulu Says:

im going with Izzy.Merideth is way too imp to die...im sure many ppl will stop watching greys anatomy if she does...and so the show cant afford to loose viewers. As many ppl said above they show the gas spilling and it would make sense with the Denny thing ...although apparantly it is Denny and not some spirit or ghost or somthing liek that,so at the moment its all quite confusing!! i also think it might be Ellis and Burk...as i also heard that Burk was getting chicked out of the show recently..

  13. McDreamyMmMmM Says:

The pregnant girl with the crushed face is the girl the alex slept with at joe's bar earlier this season! She is probably pregnant with his kid!

  14. PINK MIST Says:

The older lady that snuck out of the hospital because she never smoked a day in her life and got lung cancer? Wasn't she too old to have children?

  15. monica Says:

Alex's bar bathroom bang?? No way! That wasn't that long ago was it? Timing would be off...right?

  16. PINK MIST Says:

If i remember correctly the episode where the older lady is caught eating pie right before surgery, then steals from the gift shop, is the same lady McDreamyMmMmM is talking about..i think. Anyways that epsiode is either "I am a tree" or "Sometimes a fantasy" which is episodes 2 and 3 of season 3....Thats the only bathroom bang I can think of that involves Alex.

  17. PINK MIST Says:

timing would be off and that lady was in her 50's....

  18. rachel Says:

On E news! they said that someone is suppost to die tonight and the next episode and i think that ellis will die but I dont want any of the main characters to die i like them too much.Preston might be getting killed of too because of everything that has been happening because they film these shows two or three weeks before they air.

  19. rachel Says:

I dont think that alex ever slept with that girl at the bar that night i thought that he left.but i dont know. The girl thats pregnant in the hospital looks too young to be the same girl.

  20. McDreamy and me!!! Says:

I have to agree with McDreamyMmMmM because Ellis is old, she has alzheimer's she's also having heart surgery.I dont think they will ever kill off Meredith because the show is called GREY"S Anatomy.I don't see any other people with the last name Grey.(other than Ellis) but they wouldn't make a whole tv show than only introduce the main character half way through. I belive that by the end of this story Derek will find Meredith and everyone will be happy but when they get Ellis has some sort of attack and everyone will be sad again.

Ooo i just had a thought....you know who i want to kill off...Sidney she is soooo anoying!

  21. McDreamyMmMmM Says:

Yah im wrong about alex's bar bang..my mom told me that's what she thought. i didnt see the bar bang episode actually so i hav no idea. thats 1 of the only episodes i didn't see. I just really got into the show.

Me and my friend we're totally screaming at eachother today about what's going to happen tonight.. He is insisting that meredith is going to drown... Serioulsly? Seriously!

Btw... if anybody needs a good book to read:: the book duo "overheard at the emerald city bar" and "notes from the nurses station" is a great read.
Told from the p.o.v. from who other than Joe and Nurse Debbie..following the events of seasons 1 and 2. Finished it after two days off of school...very hard to put down. =]

  22. McSonny Says:

    kill dr.han

  23. Sandi Says:

I think it will be Izzie and it will be very sad.
I know that I will be EXTREMELY upset if it is Derek or Meredith!!!

  24. A Says:

I'm thinking it's the pregnant Jane Doe that Alex rescued who will die, or the mother of Chris (the little boy George has been looking for) who is in surgery, or maybe it's Chris. I really, honestly, can't see Meredith dying. Or, Meredith will come back from the brink of death -somehow- and perhaps as soon as everyone figure that Meredith is dead, then someone kicks the bucket (Maybe someone who lost a loved one who psycho-crazy in the waiting room?). Anyhow, I think the show it self would die if Meredith died. Um... "GREY'S" Anatomy?

  25. Mrs.Alex Karev Says:

i think that either izzi or merideth will die. i would be VERY upset if merideth dies and i dont know what they are going to do if she dies cause i dont want this show to end.
