Shonda Rhimes Discusses "Walk On Water"

On her official blog, Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes - who wrote "Walk On Water" as well as the second and third parts of this three-episode extravaganza - talks a little bit about it.

Shonda's full thoughts on the episode can be viewed by following the link above. Here's an excerpt about "Walk On Water" and specifrically Meredith, in which Rhimes explains some of the symbolism involved, and swears she didn't just throw our girl off a pier for no reason.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meredith GreyI, like McDreamy, have a thing for ferry boats.
Ferry boats are awesome and, in fact, very safe. Ferry boats are amazing.
Ferry boats are a metaphor for Meredith, you know.
What I was interested in was Meredith and how she was doing after being hurt by her mother. And the devastation of the ferry boat was the best way to physicalize Meredith's pain.
The little girl? She's also a metaphor for Mer. A motherless lost girl who can't speak for herself and disappears? Okay, that's too obvious. But you all know Meredith's been doing a dance with death for some time. Y'all know that if you've been watching. She's dark, our girl. She's dark and twisty. And I worry about her.
Now, I'm really worried about her because she's in the water and I want to be clear with you: I don't put people in the water for no reason. Meredith's got issues, she's got serious Mommy issues and she's broken and she's in the water.
I killed Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
I blew up Dylan (Kyle Chandler).
I'm not entirely playing by the rules of TV here.
There's a point. And it's coming. [I have my] fingers and toes crossed that it works.
Because what happens next... well, just wait and see.
    OMG , why is she talking like that ? why does she speak about dead Denny and Dylan ???
  2. Belgian Grey Says:
    She is manipulating us except if Ellen Pompeo wants to leave the show of course.
  3. Lyss Says:
    Okay...
    I have to say she scares me... really, she does...*gg* I love the last episode but... I don't know... on the on hand I know that Mer can't die... I don't allow that! ;) but on the other hand how she said, she's not playing by the rules of TV...
    She sounds linke someone would die... but I don't hope it's anyone, becouse I love them all. And the cliffhanger from the last episode freaks me out. But Shoda, I trust in you... if you care about Mer, like you've said, then you don't let her die!
    PS: I'm sorry for my English... I am writing from Germany :)
  4. Dreamy Says:
    I would be real mad if Mer died.. coz she is my most favorite dark n' twisty character on GA
    and i dont think that that would happen either...
  5. McNasty Social Worker Says:
    Isn't Ellen Pompeo pregnant in real life? That is the only reason I think she would die off the show. Although Meredith Grey is not my favorite character...I could not imagine the show without her. We shall see!
  6. Lyss Says:
    I haven't herad anything about beeing pregnant... just that she got enganged on her birthday or some special day for her. But she can be... But Chandra was also really pregnant and she's still there... well... we'll see on Thursday, I hope.
  7. L Says:
    All that is ridiculous , I don't even know why we are talking like that !
    it's IMPOSSIBLE , Meredith cannot die! ! the whole show would die with her ...
  8. Lyss Says:
    Yeah, thats true, but because of that we fear Shonda a bit, I guess. She's unpredictable ;)
    But if Mer doesn't die it could still be someone else... but I think we shouldn't talk about it... It doesn't make it better, but worse and we'll see on Thusday. Until then, we have to waite... unfortunatly :)
  9. callieomalleyhothothot Says:
    Meredith is a metaphor for ferries? In what way? Everybody in Seattle has ridden her at one time or another?
  10. purplemerder Says:
    Well i love shonda for making this show...and i think the reason we all love it so much is because she doesn't follow the tv rules....i trust her and i will put my sanity in her hands....
    but let me tell you it is hard.
  11. purplemerder Says:
    oh and i think some people have said that they don't like how the patients are a metaphor for what is going on in the characters lives...but let me tell you i love it...it really gets them to put what is going on in their lives in perspective.
  12. Bonnie M Says:
    I do'nt think she will die she may come close she has before. But remember Meredith always bounces back. Shae has a lot to deal with and this will be a way for her to do that. But I keep saying it better be Derek who pulls her out of the water.
  13. CM Says:
    You know, i bet theyre trying to hype us all up for this, and Meredith will die at the end of episode 2, but then in episode 3 her finger will move or she'll get revived or something and she'll come back. It happens. People seem dead when they really arent. I mean, this way, somebody dies, they just dont stay dead, lol. Sounds like a good idea to me! It will be interesting to see how all this, with denny and stuff, pieces together.
  14. karen Says:
    grey's anatomy is walking downhill..
    it is not even good anymore...
    i am disappointed..and i used to be A BIG FAN!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. lo Says:
    yes,meredith is a metaphor for ferryboats.in season one,derek says something in the second episode about how seattle has ferryboats,and he didn't think there would be ferryboats and now he has to like seattle.then throughtout season 1 and 2 theres a lot of references to his thing for ferryboats.and now,the ferryboat has crashed,just like meredith has crashed.
    and shonda scares me.a lot.her talk about people dying does NOT make me feel any better!i cannot wait for thursday.
  16. Burke Backer Says:
    Shonda's blog really does make me worry about Meredith. I am sure she will not die, but having some out of body, near death experience could be coming up. I agree with whoever said Derek has to be the one to save her. It would follow from the "knight in shining whatever" comment. I think she may be unconscious after they rescue her but that she will wake up in the third part of this series of episodes.
    It will be interesting to see the impact of this experience on her and on others. Will she embrace life more inspite of her childhood? Will she be more loving towards Derek and see that little things (morning breath and stubble) aren't that important in the bigger scheme of things? Will Derek think she jumped in since he thinks she tried to drown herself that morning? We still have Ellis's heart surgery coming up yet. What if her mother dies while she is unconsious? Will her father step up and support her more? Will her father's new famiily become closer to her? There are so many ways that this storyline could go, but one thing I am 100% sure of, Meredith will not die and Derek will be the one that comes to her rescue.
    I don't think Ellen Pompeo is pregnant. I don't think they would have let her fall into the frigid waters of Puget Sound if she were pregnant. I think that is just a rumor and I also think if she were pregnant they would write it into the script some how and that she would not leave the show.
    There is some news i just found out. Kristen's video on e online shows that somebody big is going to die *very unexpected* Confused on who? It can't be meredith...it just can't
  18. Burke Backer Says:
    GREY'S ANATOMY - "Some Kind of Miracle" - One person's fight to live affects everyone at Seattle Grace, in the dramatic conclusion to "Grey's Anatomy's" three-episode story arc. "Some Kind of Miracle" airs THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
    This is the clip on abc medianet about the third part of the series. Clearly someone who almost dies or is legally dead in episode two isn't quite dead and is fighting to live in episode three. My guess is that this will be Meredith and that she will make it.
  19. Belgian Grey Says:
    Who knows how long the break will take some forums talk about 6 weeks? I have seen on CTV program list that next week there is no GA does that mean that episode 17 will not be on before those 6 weeks?
  20. Lyss Says:
    Yeah... I do really hopte too, that it is Der you pulls her out of the water. He has to be her "knight in shinning whatever" :) It would be so sweet*gg*
    But in the end we have to trust Shonda... it is or was all in her hand and until now she did well, didn't she? ;) So I hope everything will be all right or at least Mer will be all right.
  21. Katrina Says:
    There is some part of me that thinks that Meredith is going to die. Not in the real death but in the sense that the dark and twisty Meredith might die. Obviously Derek has to rescue her. If you remember what he says in Part 1, that he is her knight in shining armor and that he will always save her.
  22. Crush Says:
    Well, if they do kill Meredith off, we'll just have to boycott the show.
  23. Belgian Grey Says:
    These posts must really give a kick to Shonda I am sure chez enjoys martyrising us. She is insane just kidding of course.
  24. k Says:
    i think the steamboat blows up and izzie dies...
  25. Kristin Says:
    Ok, nobody was meant to know this but the car blows up, Izzie dies and then Denny appears. It is not known if she comes back to life.
    Meredith is saved by Derek, but he is not the only one trying to save our Mer.
    Alex & Addi have some problems ahead.
    Elizabeth Reaser IS the pregnant woman Alex saved, and he becomes attached to her. (But no, he doesn't cut her LVAD wire)
    Thats all I know.
    And Burke Backer is right.
