Grey Chatter: Blinded By the Light
Is it a coincidence that "Staring at the Sun" began with Meredith talking in her voiceover about blind spots at the same time that she and Derek are in the tub together? Could this be some foreshadowing about the impending doom about to play out in their relationship?
Because while seeing them together in the tub is deliciously steamy, it is hard to let go of all the drama and emotions that have led them to this point. It seems that at any moment, this bright and shiny existence may come crumbling down, just as it has before. On the other hand, they are each dark and twisty enough in their own ways to maybe make it work.
While this opening scene is certainly going down in Grey’s best scenes ever, the real story of the episode seems to be George. First of all, George and Cristina. Two people who aren’t often paired together, mainly because they are so different. But George’s dad has pulled them together in a heartbreaking way. Obviously, George wants what’s best for his dad, which normally would include the expertise of Cristina and Burke.
But George is also slowly figuring out Burke’s secret. It is somewhat ironic that the attributes that George respects in Preston – his honor, his confidence, his honesty – are the very things that Burke is currently lacking, forcing George to question his own integrity, and do the right thing.
George and Callie are also thrown together in an unexpected way in this episode, leading Callie to realize her mistake in breaking up with George. But his heart has been broken, and seeing her talking and laughing with his brothers is almost more than he can take. She made her choice, which didn’t include him, so according to George, she has no right to interact with his family – she gave that right up.
Although she may now be realizing what a huge mistake she made in ending it with George, it may just be too late. George tried his best to lay it on the line for her, but there was still something missing there. Callie knew it and George knew it. Unless George is willing to take another risk, this may be the end of the line for this twosome.
This episode also brought Alex and Izzie together again in a new way. Alex gives Izzie the only thing he can think of that will show her he does still care – he lets her work on a patient.
But it’s not enough for Izzie to let her guard down with Alex. The pain of losing Denny is still too real for her, and moving forward with Alex would undermine Izzie’s love for Denny. But it is nice to see the spunky Izzie back a little bit, even if her character seems less bright and shiny than before.
Maybe a strong dose of reality is what the interns need, as well as some of the residents. After seeing Derek happy and moving on, Addison throws her wedding rings off the ferry in a move that shows she wants to get past him as well. But if she truly wants to get him out of her mind, keeping a relationship no matter how platonic is not a good idea.
She’s not willing to leave Seattle Grace, which means that maybe she is still holding on to some tiny thread of hope that she and he will reunite. Or maybe she does just like Seattle better.
One thing’s for sure: this episode built up a lot of suspense and tension among the characters in more ways than one. It’s obviously laying the groundwork for some passion and drama soon to come.

I hope you are wrong about Der/Mer being destined for impending doom---good gawd they've only been together for what, 2 minutes and 45 seconds? LOL But, seriously, let the doom fall on someone else's doorstep for a change, these two need some togetherness minus the drama, if only for a while. Give them and us a good dose of the passion and romance we saw in season 1. I think the foreshadowing going on involves the whole Burketina/George's dad storyline.
As for Callie and George, I'm just not feeling it for the two of them anymore. George is a very sensitive guy as we all know. I think what she did (sleeping w/Sloan like 5 minutes after they broke up) may just be too much for him to deal with and recover from right now, especially now that he's reeling from his dad's situation and the fact that Burke is hiding his ailment.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, my favorite character right now is Alex. I'm loving what we're seeing from him lately. A lot of maturity has taken place over the past season. It speaks volumes that he can move past Izzie's rejection and still be there for her as a friend. He's come a long way baby! I can't wait to see where he's going! I hope it's not to Addison though, unless they plan on making them a long-term couple. I don't think a fling is the best idea for either one of them or their reputations right now.
I've seen the promo about a hundred times for thursday and more and more I keep thinking Cristina's bloody mess is a dream sequence, or should I say nightmare for her. I just don't think she'd be wandering the halls covered in blood like that. I think it's her guilty conscience speaking and warning her of what could happen if she continues the charade with Burke. At least I hope that's what's going on. We'll find out soon enough!
As for Addison, I think she needs to keep a low profile for now, get herself and her emotions under control. Steer clear of Der/Mer and get back to the strong, confident woman introduced to us at the end of season 1. Enough of the wimpy sappy Addi! Time to put on her big girl panties and deal with it!
And thursday's "extended" episode is only giving us an extra 10 minutes---what a tease! But I'll take what I can get cause it's never enough!

I agree with you about Alex...I am loving him right now. he was so annoying in season 1 and the first half of season 2 but now he is growing so much...I do want to see him with Addison and I would like them to be in a longterm relationship. they both deserve someone to be into them with no other baggage. If they do get together I don't want it to be a fling.. I love alex and izzie together but i think izzie needs to be alone right now and figure out her life...i would love to see her and alex be close friends i would love to see his character in that situation. All they really were was sex last time anyway...they should be close friends for the rest of the season and then maybe make a cliff hanger for the season finally about them being together.

I think Izzie really liked Alex to begin with and thought they had a chance at being more than friends with privileges. But he was going through that period of self doubt right after he found out he had failed his board exams and was having some sexual problems. Then he slept with Olivia to prove to himself that he was still manly and Izzie caught them together which completely changed their relationship. He fell for her even harder after she walked away, but when she came back it was chnaged for her. I think then she only liked him for the sex. Now, they are starting over by becoming friends and I think that is the best place to start.

I agree with Burke Backer 100% about Alex and Izzie--I hope too that by their building a deep, trusting friendship, it will become the basis of real love between them in time. Alex needed to grow and mature to become a potential love interest for Izzie again. Because Izzie grew and matured from her relationship with Denny and would have otherwise left Alex behind for good. I could really see them back together now, after Izzie has healed from her grief.

I would love to see Izzie and Alex together as a couple in every way. I just don't see it happening anytime soon because of Izzie not being ready to move on.
Men being men, and especially Alex being Alex, he will have his sex with someone. LOL I hope Izzie doesn't get hurt again and I hope it doesn't ruin the potential the two of them have to be a couple down the road.

Hey, Rose and Purplemerder (Faith, MJ, and Burketina, too) can I just say how nice it is that you are on this website. It is helping me get through this week of worrying about the next episode to know that there are other people out there hoping that everything will work out for Burke and Cristina, George's dad, George, too. I agree with luvethisshow, I can't imagine that Cristina would be running out of the operating room with blood all over her if it weren't a nightmare of some sort. I've been trying to distract myself thinking about other people on the show.
Here's a question for all of you. Did you believe Alex when he told Izzie that he didn't know he still felt that way about her either? I personally don't think he ever got over her. I don't think he believed Denny would live and so thought eventually she would be available to him again. What do you think about George and Callie? I love George, and Callie was more likeable to me the last two episodes, but somehow they just don't look right together. George is so small it makes Callie look bigger. Physically they just don't look like a good fit to me. Maybe that shouldn't matter. And then there is McSteamy and Addison. I wish they hadn't made Sloan such an arrogant jerk. I thought he would be a little more likeable. Right now, if he has his clothes on, he doesn't seem to add much to the show. I would really like a love interest for Addison, just not Derek.

Alex--I think he tried to let go of Izzie back when he could see that she was really in love with Denny. And when Denny died, I think Alex's only concern was for Izzie's well-being, even though we could tell that he still deeply cared. So I think the kiss took him by surprise just as much as her. I know we all love how he handled it.
George and Callie--I have an open mind and just keep watching to see where its going with them.
Addison--she needs to heal & become strong in herself before starting another relationship. I wish she would remember Bailey's words about not being defined by any man.

Hey Burke Backer, you are welcome- I love this site and love that we can bounce things off of each other. I agree with rose about Alex, I am not sure that he knew that he could even be the person he is today.
About Callie and George- I dont' really like Callie, she has been better in the last two episodes but I don't like them together. Call me crazy but I liked him with that nurse..can't remember her name.
I want Alex and Addison to be together in a real relationship...maybe they could hide it at first. that might be fun as one by one the hospital finds out.

Olivia. I liked George better with Olivia, too. I think I agree with both of you about Alex. I do think he has grown so much on this show and maybe he couldn't really love Izzie back in season two before the whole Denny thing. Maybe he didn't even recognize himself how much she meant to him.
I'm not so sure about Alex and Addision. Maybe it is just because of where they are in their careers, but she seems too sophisticated and mature for him. I get the feeling that she is older. There is certainly a common bond though iin her specialty area. I just love that Alex has a soft spot for babies, especially newborn fragile babies. So, you never know. Nothinig is predictable on this show.
