Patrick Dempsey... to the Rescue!

When Patrick Dempsey noticed that a Grey’s Anatomy crew member looked pale, he asked him what was wrong. And it's a good thing, too.

Dempsey to the RescueThe man said that he felt dizzy, but that he would be okay shortly. Dempsey told him that he was calling an ambulance right away. As it turned out, the staffer had a life-threatening blood clot in his leg!

When the man admitted he was woozy and couldn’t feel his legs, the man we know as Dr. McDreamy immediately had someone call for medical help, even as the crew member objected.

This isn't the first time Patrick has showcased his real-life medical skills... sort of, anyway. Back in July, he took command during a difficult situation in which his four-year-old daughter, Tallulah, was injured.

Guess playing a brilliant surgeon on television is bound to rub off sometimes!

Grey's Anatomy Caption Contest XXVIII

In our office, Friday afternoons are mostly spent discussing the previous day's Grey's Anatomy episode. And the image below, from "Oh, The Guilt," inspired our fun Friday feature -- the Insider's weekly Caption Contest!

We received 58 entries, all of which were good. We enjoyed the insight into the minds of the interns from IheartMyMcGeorgie and GARocks, as well as the simple, declarative entry from Tracey. Even the admittedly bad poem by Mc. Hotty warranted consideration... but ultimately, there can be only one champion. And it's TakeTheElevator.

Congratulations! The winning entry appears beneath the picture. Thanks to all who participated and good luck this week!

The Interns Look On

"If we’d known this was going to be our execution, we’d have requested a better last meal. These snacks suck."

Round Table Discussion: Oh, The Guilt

This week on the Round Table, Cristina bails out Burke, Izzie refuses to deposit $8.7 million, Addison throws Derek for a loop, and the staff works on a case involving a precarious piercing ...

Should Callie have told George about hooking up with McSteamy?

Dr. George O'MalleyMcCritic: Grey isn't just the last name of an often self-centered intern, it's also an area in which many relationships are found. And it seemed as though Callie and George were smack in the middle of that questionable status when she got her McSteam on. But with the O'Callie union over for good, no, there's no reason for Dr. Torres to have revealed to George that she left her Mark earlier in the week.

AwayWithMerDer: I really don't see a reason for Callie to tell George. It was after the relationship was over (whether George realized it or not). Why hurt the little guy anymore?

iheartizzie: If she were planning on trying to reconcile things with him, then yes. George would have a right to know in that case. But if that breakup was for good, which is what it's looking like, then telling him would only serve to humiliate the guy.

Married-to-McDreamy: No. If she told George, he probably wouldn't have noticed anyway. George didn't seem phased by Callie's break-up, so there is no reason for her to waste energy on being honest with him or trying to make him jealous anymore.

Harder to believe: Someone not cashing an $8.7M check, or someone getting their piercing imbedded in... you know.

iheartizzie: Not depositing the money. Come on, Izzie. No one says you have to use the money if you don't feel you deserved it. But by letting the check sit there and collect orange juice stains, you're costing yourself at least $348,000* annually.

* -- assumes 4.0 percent APR on a money market savings account.

AwayWithMerDer: I'm actually going to say the middle-aged real estate agent getting a piercing down there in the first place is the hardest to believe -- but mighty entertaining anyways!

Grey's Anatomy Cast Supports National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Support a CureOn last night's episode of Grey’s Anatomy, "Oh, The Guilt," Dr. Mark Sloan (below), Seattle Grace's newest plastic surgeon, and Dr. Miranda Bailey, our favorite resident, were introduced to a young mother recently diagnosed with breast cancer and coping with the indescribable fear, guilt and anguish that comes with such circumstances.

It is not surprising, given the Grey's Anatomy cast's support of important causes, that this poignant story line appeared in October, in conjunction with national Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and a monumental effort is needed to win their fight.

In addition to the prominent patient and Miranda's treatment of her, last night's episode featured a prominently displayed pink ribbon -- the breast cancer awareness symbol -- on the fridge in Meredith's house. During a commercial break, Kate Walsh (who plays Addison Shepherd) made a public service announcement regarding breast cancer, instructing viewers to learn more and telling them what they can do to contribute and find a cure.

It's nice to see Grey's Anatomy championing this effort. Find out more about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and how you can help by following these links.

T.R. Knight Confirms He is Gay

Actor T.R. Knight, the terrific Grey's Anatomy star who has become a fan favorite as everyman George O'Malley, has announced he is gay.

T.R. KnightThe 33-year-old addressed rumors of his sexuality in a statement to People magazine Thursday, and while it's part of who he is, he hopes that isn't how people view him.

"I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality, and I'd like to quiet any unnecessary rumors that may be out there," Knight said in his statement.

"While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."

Before taking on the role of the bumbling, puppy-eyed surgical intern George on the ABC drama, T.R. (which stands for Theodore Raymond) made a name for himself as a stage actor. His TV credits include CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

We're happy for T.R. in that the decision to come out is often a difficult one, and he clearly felt it was time. If we see or hear anything more, we will have it for you as soon as possible.

Tonight's Episode Preview: Oh, The Guilt

Guilt, like many other emotions, is in no short supply at Seattle Grace Hospital. Any viewer knows that. The only question is whose guilt, new or old, will resonate with us the most during tonight's episode.

There's not a lot of speculation floating around about this one, and the previews shown at the end of "What I Am" weren't particularly revealing.

Friends, thanks to the morphineHere are four things we've discerned:

  1. Dr. Bailey must treat a young mother battling breast cancer. That's sure to hit close to home with Miranda, who just became a mother herself.
  2. A recovering Meredith and her new BFF, Addison, examine a couple who find themselves in an awkward position.
  3. The interns defend a resident's competence at a staff meeting. We're guessing this involves the case of Denny Duquette.
  4. Derek learns more about Mark and Addison's relationship. Certainly the most intriguing development hinted at in previews.

There's clearly more to the romance between Addison and McSteamy than Derek knows -- or is willing to accept. Was she cheating on him long before the night he walked in on them? Did Addison continue to see Mark after Derek left? Finn may be ancient history, but will these revelations in any way thwart Derek's pursuit of Meredith?

Well, it will be interesting to find out, that's for sure. And once we do, the Insider will post its comprehensive episode guide, along with as many quotes and pictures as we can find. We'll also compile a list of the music from the episode, post our Round Table discussion and announce our Caption Contest winner on Friday.

Looking forward to it!

Katherine Heigl Impresses Critics, Writers

Katie RocksWe've talked about how Izzie's grief has been one of the central themes of Season 3 so far, and how actress Katherine Heigl (right) continues to warrant and draw rave reviews with a raw, emotional portrayal of the intern.

She may not have the most lines, but Izzie, in her response to the tragic death of Denny Duquette, is stealing the show.

Here's what the media and Katherine's own producers are saying about her efforts in last week's episode, "What I Am," and about her commendable achievement of playing a character enduring such heart-wrenching pain throughout the season:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Again, Katherine Heigl is amazing here. She sits, cradling the phone, tears silently streaming down her face. Katherine Heigl is doing such an excellent job making Izzie look lost and numb. It’s heartbreaking."
-- The Arizona Daily Star
"Katherine Heigl, in her quiet way, owned this episode: She didn't have so many lines, but has she ever been better? Something interesting and gloomy was washing over her face throughout the show. This was Heigl's best, most convincing grieving of the series."
-- Entertainment Weekly
"... This episode for me was really a chance to deal with the things that had been haunting me all summer. Especially Izzie. I’d been pretty worried about her, you see. She was in such pain when we left her. And let me tell you, I watched that final scene in Denny’s room where she wouldn’t get out of the bed more times than is probably normal for someone who WROTE the thing. I couldn’t help it -- Katie Heigl’s amazing performance sucks me in every single time."
-- Shonda Rhimes, Grey's Anatomy Creator & Executive Producer
"... I love Katie’s performance -- like she hasn’t slept in days. Like baking has replaced sleep and it’s all she can do to move her facial muscles and form words. 'Cause in my experience that is what it’s like when people you love suddenly die. I love that she’s not afraid to go there. You just don’t find that many beautiful actresses working in prime time TV willing to spend an entire episode without any makeup -- know what I mean?"
-- Krista Vernoff, Grey's Anatomy Producer & Writer
Sandra Oh As You've Never Seen Her
Or maybe you have. After all, the photos below, taken from a spread by Isabel Snyder, have appeared in a number of publications. But it's still neat to see the artsy side of Sandra Oh, the woman behind our favorite snarky intern, even if you have before:
Grey's Anatomy Music Rocks iTunes List
A glance at the iTunes most downloaded list reveals the significant impact and lasting presence of Grey's Anatomy music. Check it out:
Snow Patrol1. The Fray, "How to Save a Life"
2. Akon, "Smack That"
3. Weird Al Yankovic, "White & Nerdy" (Parody of “Ridin’ Dirty”)
4. Hinder, "Lips of an Angel"
5. Snow Patrol, "Chasing Cars" (right)
6. Nelly Furtado, "Maneater"
7. Jibbs, "Chain Hang Low"
8. Ludacris, "Money Maker"
9. Justin Timberlake, "SexyBack"
10. JoJo, "Too Little, Too Late (Radio Version)"
As many fans know, both Snow Patrol and The Fray licensed the above songs to ABC to produce unique Grey's Anatomy music videos. That innovative marketing strategy has been a hit with fans, and the bands' sales are clearly benefiting!
Both "How to Save a Life" and "Chasing Cars" were featured prominently in Season 2 and can also be found on the corresponding Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack, Volume II. Here's hoping that more talented, lesser-known musicians featured on our favorite show receive this kind of publicity boost!
