Round Table Discussion: I Am a Tree
This week on the Round Table, Izzie bakes, Callie gets down (and George gets jealous), and Mark makes a McSteamy return. Our esteemed panel weighs in on last night's episode...
Should "I Am a Tree" have been the season premiere, as Canadian viewers mistakenly believed it to be?
McCritic: Yes. Little was accomplished in the actual season premiere that couldn't have been condensed and fit into this entertaining episode.
AwayWithMerDer: Since the U.S. season premiere had useless flashbacks and no real plot, I think Canadians got it right. I don't see why they're complaining they got to miss our boring season opener.
Married-to-McDreamy: Definitely not. Had "I Am a Tree" been the premiere, we would have missed watching Meredith struggle with her decision over which of her male courters to choose. Oh wait. That's still happening.
iheartizzie: The actual premiere wasn't all bad, but last night was far superior, a return to the Grey's Anatomy we love. Sandra Oh's native land may gripe, but they actually made out great with this supposed gaffe. To borrow a classic Napoleon Dynamite quote: "Luck-y!"
Jealous George: Sweet and adorable or overbearing and frightening?
iheartizzie: Watching George act jealous and insecure is hilarious. How can you not love a guy who uncomfortably asks his female friends about panties, or who flirts with girls and almost punctures their eyes with darts in the process? Bambi is sensitive and often overwhelmed by life... which is why we love him.
Married-to-McDreamy: I don't think I could ever refer to George as frightening. I find Jealous George endearing and cute, although the scene in which he's throwing darts at the nurse's head baffles me. Was that an attempt to flirt with her? If so, he may need some tips from a certain colleague, who was shagging the patient in the bathroom.
AwayWithMerDer: Yeah, I'm going to go with frightening. He simply does NOT have the dart skills to be jealous.
McCritic: George was just curious. While that may unnerve men in yellow hats, Callie was right in taking it as a compliment. It may take random panty discoveries to elicit deeper emotion from the cuddly intern, but at least it's there. The same can't be said for Callie's pants when she dances.
Should Izzie forego a medical comeback in lieu of becoming a baker?
AwayWithMerDer: Definitely. I can't wait to watch the episode where Izzie falls in love with a muffin.
Married-to-McDreamy: Despite the fact that Izzie is apparently an excellent baker, she definitely looks much cuter in scrubs than in an apron.
McCritic: Undoubtedly. Not because she's partially responsible for killing both Denny and the man who was supposed to receive the heart in last year's season finale, but due to the joy her muffins can bring. You might recover and save a life or two in the operating room, Izz, but there are plenty of doctors out there. The world needs more sweet, moist muffin makers. STAT!
iheartizzie: Yes. Did you see the volume of baked goods this girl cranked out in the span of a day? Imagine of someone were paying her for them! The muffins seemed to be well-received by Addison, too... although everything tastes better when drunk.
4. What will happen with Addison and McSteamy?
Married-to-McDreamy: One can only hope that he will continue to walk around on the show in just a towel!
McCritic: It's hard to say. But hopefully Mark won't be wearing any more clothing than he was last night as it keeps happening. I'm hoping for a Towel Off or two in the future with McDreamy.
AwayWithMerDer: Since Addison apparently waited all of one day after the dissolution of her marriage to call McSteamy -- and he managed to arrive, from N
ew York, on that day -- I'm guessing this is more than a booty call. Now, where will Addison and McSteamy end up? New York? Seattle? Since the show is based in the Emerald City and Addison is way too hot of a character to get rid of, I'm going with Seattle.
iheartizzie: Dr. Mark Sloan longs for Addison almost as intensely as the Insider's own McCritic pines for muffins. So you can bet this stud-muffin is going to try and win her back. Hopefully Richard can get this plastic surgeon a job at Seattle Grace and elevate staff awkwardness to even greater heights.

I don't know if Mark will stay in Seattle. He did say to Alex that he wouldn't "see much action up here, you should transfer to New York, LA, or San Fransico."

I'm not such a fan of Mark... though I do agree that this was more of a better start to the new season than the first episode. I live in Canada and I watch ABC, and I saw the one with the flash backs... I didn't think it was too bad, because I got a couple of laughs out of it. However I still sort of do prefer this one.
I agree with McCritic. A towel or two off of McDreamy... better yet, a whole episode where he keeps somehow losing his clothes... Damn, I'm going to sleep well tonight.
And if he does join Seattle Grace Hospital's crew - how WEIRD is that going to be?
None the less, one can only hope that

I liked the season premier. It was a nice transition from season two to season three. If we had just jumped right into epidsode two we would have missed the continuity of Izzie still in the ball gown, Addision finding the panties that ended up on the bulletin board. I loved the final scene with Cristina and Burke in episode one when she cries and he says he will do his best not to die. For that scene alone, I loved episode one.
George is sweet and adorable, he just doesn't have a clue. Izzie should definitely continue with her medical career and get back to her sassy but lovable self. I seriously hope that Mark stays around. Both Mark and Finn are great additions to the show. I would kind of like to see a new love triangle with Addison and the two of them. We could give Meredith and Derek a break and let them be happy together for a little while.

episode 1 was awesome. I don't even see how there is a question. The flashback was very deep (of NY not the mixer). Dereks speech, derek and george-george came to terms with der/mer and his relationship with callie, and der came to terms with mer. We all saw the end of der/addie. Chief is alone, i don't see how all of those major events could've been condensed and squeezed into "enhancements" into 2nd epi. Shonda is genious and you never know when things will relate back. Halfway thru the season we will still be going back to epi. 1 and relating. I thought it totally outracked epi. 2, guess I'm crazy!

When it comes to the second episode being the premere in canada, you can't skip time. so therefore it was dumb to skip an episode.

Well, i like the way things turn cuz in the season premiere we got to see how mer and derek met and how was the break uq with derek and addison.. See george more of a jealousy.. Izzie definitely must keep in the program.. And i'm not such of a mcsteamy fan but he will make everything spicy and more interesting in seattle grace hospital... So i say that he can stay..!

Damn MSteamy looked hot at the end! I hope he sticks around for a while. Between that and Meredith dating both Finn and Derek the next few episodes promise to be great!
Also, I made a quiz for this episode that I thought you might all enjoy. See if you were really paying attention on Thursday night :D

I agree that although dryer than what we are all accustomed to, the season opener was still good and needed. How do you begin to untangle the mess that we left off with if we dont begin slowly. The flashbacks were, in fact clever and a matter of genius for the writers to draw from in the future. I really thought that after Denny died, I was done with Greys....WHATEVER....who was I kidding? This show is incredible and I am totally HOOKED!

I want both Addison and Mark to stay in Seattle. The show wouldn't be the same without Addy!!!

Mcsteamy and Addison are an absolute must have. The premise of Greys' is tesion, tension, and then some extra tension between friends, lovers, friends and lovers. And quite frankly, the dynamics this would create will be extremely entertaining. Good job writers!

What was the name of the song that Callie danced to in the basement in her underwear.

I was never a really big Callie fan until this episode. She took the blame for the panties so Meridith and Cristina wouldn't get in trouble. I thought the scene of her dancing in her underwear was great. She is not tiny like Mer or Cristina but she still had the courage to be on tv in her underwear. That's what I like most about this show - the cast is so diverse with different races and different body types. No one is the same and every one is unique in their own little way.
I'm not so sure I like the fact that Addison and McSteamy are getting back together though. She cheated with Mark and made life hell for McDreamy then gets back with Mark and every thing is great for her. He should stay on the show, but not with Addison. She needs some alone time to act like she is actually sad over the end of her marriage that she wanted to keep so badly.

I love addison and mcsteamy pairing. they are the reason why i will watch this season. last season was a tease for me.

I love season 3 so far everything is going about how I expected it. But I am wondering what is up with George? He really doesn't act like he wants to be with Callie all that much. If he still has feelings for Meredith he needs to get over it.
