Jeffrey Dean Morgan Reflects Upon Denny
He did not go gently, and death was definitely not proud.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan hoped, prayed, schemed and finally begged for the life of his Grey's Anatomy character, Denny Duquette, according to the L.A. Times. At one point, he marched into the office of creator / executive producer Shonda Rhimes, turned on the charm and pleaded.
"Please, please, just let me live," Morgan asked.
Rhimes was sympathetic, but unwavering. On the season finale, as fans have lamented for weeks now, Denny survived a difficult heart transplant, asked Izzie to marry him, then succumbed to a stroke. Denny quietly breathed his last with no one in the room (save 20 million viewers at home).
"It was a grim day, let me tell you. A dark, grim day. I'm still not over it. It broke my heart to leave that show," said Morgan of his death scene.
In becoming one of TV's top hits, Grey's Anatomy has built and maintained a devoted following, many of whom held out hope that the ailing patient would somehow pull through. Fans have voiced sorrow and outrage since his death. Some are even in denial to the point where they believe Denny may somehow come back to life.
"I don't think so," Morgan said, grinning. "I mean, I was blue."
But there is life after death for the actor, who has toiled for 15 years with guest roles on pretty much every TV show you can think of. Fans are approaching him in public, old friends are coming out of the woodwork and producers who wouldn't have given him the time of day a year ago are suddenly calling.
"It's very weird. I mean, I've been kicking around this town for years. For an actor, it's usually just about paying the mortgage and keeping the dog fed. But now I can actually think about the kind of projects I want to do. Now I can actually say no if I want," Morgan said.
Leaning back with an iced coffee in a cafe in Toluca Lake, Calif., where he resides, Morgan has the look of someone who can't quite believe he's in the position he's in. He had, in fact, turned down an audition that day, since he just agreed to do a movie starring Lisa Kudrow and Teri Garr that begins shooting next week in Austin, Texas.
"It's a small part," Morgan said. "But can you imagine, Lisa Kudrow? And Teri Garr? I mean, Tootsie, that's just amazing."
Of course, life's not perfect, and if he had been able to choose precisely what he wanted to do, Morgan would be back on Grey's Anatomy.
"Oh, I came up with lots of ideas for how I could come back," he said. "I mean, what if Denny had a twin brother named Lenny, who was a pediatric surgeon? They need a pediatric surgeon in that hospital."
Yet he went into the Denny gig knowing he was a goner. Rhimes saw him as Mary-Louise Parker's dead husband on Weeds (Morgan jokes that it was his year, apparently, to play the dead and dying) and asked him to audition.
Shonda Rhimes is intensely secretive regarding plots, so Morgan was given only basic information. While he would appear in multiple episodes, his story arc would end eventually in the death of his character.
Which, at the time, was more than alright with Morgan. He thought initially that he might be brought in as a romantic diversion for Meredith, played by lead actress and narrator Ellen Pompeo. It wasn't until after he took the job and got a script that he realized his love interest would be Dr. Izzie Stevens, played by Katherine Heigl.
"No one knew how much the story would take on a life of its own," Morgan said. "I don't think even Shonda knew how the fans would be drawn to the romance. It was pretty incredible."
Over the course of his time on Grey's Anatomy, Morgan experienced what it was like to be a pivotal character in one of the hottest dramas on TV.
To an outsider, it might seem like an easy role. Morgan was in a hospital gown and lying bed for virtually every one of his scenes. Yet the confines of Denny's disease were what made the role so challenging.
"I definitely give it to the writers," he said. "They created a guy who could charm a room without moving, but it took a lot of effort."
Denny was seen out of bed only twice, once in his first episode — the only time you see him in regular clothes — and then towards the end, after his LVAD wire was implanted and he became a bit more mobile.
"I cannot tell you how excited I was to see a scene with him walking," Morgan joked. "I started thinking, 'oh, maybe he'll be able to go outside, maybe we'll get to go to Seattle.' Then I turn the page, and nope, he's falling down the stairs and back to bed."
Still, it was the best work an actor can get when flat on his back.
"I had no idea what it would be like. How attached I would get. To Denny and everyone there. It is such a great show, such a great group of people. It was the only time in my career when I didn't mind getting up at 5:30 in the morning, didn't mind the 16-hour days. I couldn't believe it. So yes, I fought to stay," Morgan said.
He and other cast members fought for Denny's life. Even the network itself threw in its two cents.
"We didn't get the final pages until, like, a day before shooting. At the table reading, I can't bear to look, but I'm sitting next to [Patrick] Dempsey, and he's flipping through to the end, and he's saying, 'I don't see it, man, I don't see a death scene. I think you're going to live,'" Morgan recalled.
The reason for that, of course, was that the death of Denny occupied about three lines of the script, at the very end. When he reached that point in the script, Morgan collapsed for his chair onto the floor. Heigl looked at him, sharing his pain.
In addition to being emotionally wrenching, the death scene was technically difficult. When Denny died, he simply looked momentarily puzzled, leaned back, and drifted off. But in an ensuing scene, Izzie was a basket case, lying next to his corpse and refusing to leave while her fellow interns tried to talk her out of the room.
"Everyone's saying, 'What we really need is for you not to breathe, Jeff,'" Morgan said. "And I'm like, 'It's a four-minute scene, man.' And Katie's right beside me, crying, bless her heart, but the tears are hitting me on the neck and… that was driving me crazy."
Still, he pulled it off and suddenly it was over — a fact that still hasn't really resonated with the 40-year old.
"I have definitely been laying low for the last few weeks. I mean, how can they do the show without me? What's going to happen to Izzie? Who did Denny leave his money to? Are they going to have a funeral? They should definitely have a funeral," he said.
Distraught as he is over his own demise, Morgan realizes he is standing on the edge of opportunity. The choices he makes next could carry him, and his asking price, into another echelon. Or, he could simply fade away. A piece of Grey's Anatomy trivia.
"I'm just looking always for characters that change, because I want to get better, as an actor and as a person. But basically," said Morgan, who would like to do more movies as well as TV. "I'd really like to work with Shonda again; I would follow that woman anywhere."
Seek and you shall receive. Morgan recently became the first actor to be cast in the Untitled Shonda Rhimes Project, which will be filming this fall for an ABC piolt. As for who he's playing, Morgan has no clue. After all, we're talking about Shonda.
"She just told me it was the best character she'd ever written," he said. "That's good enough for me."
For now, he's trying to savor the moment.
"I am really going to try hard not to screw up. But in the end it's a crapshoot. You never know what's going to take off and what isn't. It's been great, though. I mean, it is great. Really great.

I was dissapointed that Denny died, I was hoping that they would let the relationship between he and Izzy play out. You could tell by the tone that he was a gonner, but I thought it would go a little longer, like another season, and they tissue rejection, people would have watched a wedding, and more character deveolpment. People reject organs all the time. Had it been up to me, I would have keept Mr. Morgan arround for another season.
I love how he even thought up a plot twist to stay on the show. So HE WAS THE ONE who started the “twin” internet rumour huh?
Why can’t any of these tv script writers give us a happy ending? is it so hard? they should have at least let denny survive. i know i was balling by eyes out!!! its a cold world i guess!
The Denn and Izzie storyline was such a pleasure to watch each week, and I think I crieed harder than Izzy when Denny passed it moved me so much. EVen if you do not return on Grey’s (which you should!!!) I am looking forward to watching you in the new upcoming project. Best of Luck
I was DEVASTATED when Denny passed away. I loved tuning in to watch Denny and Izzy. They can’t bring him back (as much as I would LOVE them to) but I look forward to the new show. Your smile is CHARMING to say the least
I was very dissspointed when Denny died. I wanted him to live so bad. He had made it through his first near death experience and I thought for sure he would make it through this one. I cried, I re-played it, I just doidn’t want it to be true. The only good thing that came out of it was Merideth and Derek hooking up. I was happy and sad all at once.
I was very dissapointed that Denny died. I was sobbing. I cant beleive a women like me took days to get over his death. My boys teased me to know end.. They said I could change the name of our dog to Denny just to make me feel better.(I actually was going to) The chemistry that Denny and Izzy raidiated on screen was truly a thing to watch. I will miss Dennys warm, charming and heart melting smile. You guys were incredibly together.
I think tat the ‘what-about-me-when-you-go-to-the-light scene’ when Izzie pleads Denny to go along with her plan is the best in the entire series. It was one of the best love scenes I’ve ever seen. Beautiful touching and passionate.
This can STILL be rectified by making the whole thing Izzie’s horrible nightmare! Shonda, you would have some of the happiest viewers ever!!! There was that point when Denny asked her to marry him and she just stared at him and turned and ran away. Let’s say she laid down and was thinking and thinking and in turmoil and then fell asleep! Nightmare! PLEASE???????
I was depressed for several days when Denny died! (Hell, I still am!) But for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it may be the best opportunity he’s ever had - because Denny put him on the map, and I have to believe he’s going to do great things and that we’ll all get to enjoy that unbelievable smile again - and again, and again!!!
I’m 44 years old, and I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen an actor as fine as Mr. Morgan since the days of Tom Selleck as Magnum, P.I. Same incredible looks, younger stud muffin!
Shonda, thanks SO MUCH for working on a new project for Jeffrey Dean!! It’s bound to ROCK!!!
I totally agree that Jeff Morgan could be brought back, as Denny’s twin brother!! He could have quietly called his brother when he thought he was dying & now his brother could show up!!!!!! Imagine the scene as he walks into the hospital & Izzie sees him for the first time?
It is nice to see that I am not the only fan that was distraught when Denny died. I mean, hey…it is a TV show right? I have just fallen in love with Grey’s Anatomy and even though I was angry for a while after the finale…I will tune in next season to see what is going to happen. Shonda: if you happen to read these do all of us fans a favor and don’t just leave Denny’s death at the finale and not go into it further. We never get to see what happens with the patients from show to show and a funeral or something is necessary for all of us Denny fans to grieve properly. There….I am officially off of my soapbox now. Love you Jeffrey Dean Morgan….you can come down to Texas for a visit anytime you wish!!!
Shane
I only watched the last three episodes of season 2, and I only watched them for JD’s death scenes. Now that JD’s moving on I probably won’t be back, but I did enjoy what I saw
But what the h.e.double hockey sticks…Mcdreamy? You must be kidding.
It’s the dimples man … the dimples just KILL me!
Good luck on the new show JD!
OMG! Denny was the real McDreamy….
I absolutely LOVED watching the chemistry between Izzy and Denny every week. Loved the little “dirty” comments and his smile. How I wish it was all a dream, but we know it’s not. As much as it pains me to see, I replay the finale often and cry as much as I did the first time. Denny was an amazing character and Jeffrey dear, you played him perfect. Good luck with the new project and maybe I’ll get to see you in Texas.
Denny was what kept me watching the show! The romance between him and Izzie was awesome! It’s ashame he will not be on the show anymore. At least I can look at him everyday on my desktop!! Jeffrey, you are handsome and sweet. You deserve the best! Keep smiling!
I fell in love with Denny, and cried like a baby at the finale. Hoping the untitled pilot is a hit, would like to see Jeffrey in some upcoming shows/movies. It’s too bad his character on Grey’s was short lived, hope to see more of that smile. Good luck!!
LOVED the plot between Denny and Izzy..they were awesome…bawled like a baby when he died…soooooooooooooo sad…and looking forward to seeing Morgan in upcoming movies and shows….maybe I’ll make a point to run into you in Austin!
Can’t believe it… we thought we saw JDM walking through one of the larger downtown hotels in Austin. Hubby didn’t think so (he can be a bit of a dumbass) but sure enough, it was JDM. Confirmed that he was in Austin. Saw him again today again (Friday, 6/16/06) downtown.
Good luck.
I am from Mexico and I watch the show though cable TV. Season 2 is still running but I am so dissapointed reading Denny will die, its a REAL SHAME. He is one of the most charming actors I ever met. I didnt imagine he had this amount of fans because here in Mexico he is not very known, but it is obvious because he is lovely and an excellent actor, with nice dimples and a very beautiful smile.
Well I have given it time to get over the disappointing Denny exit and now that the new season is fast approaching I find myself with no desire to watch the new season. I have realized that the Denny & Izzy storyline captivated my interest in the show and now that Denny is gone & never coming back, its time for this viewer to move on as well. I think the writers on GA need to listen to what the viewers want. Bring back Denny! turn that unforgivable error in writing judgement into Izzy’s bad dream. Please!
BRING BACK DENNY!!!!!!!!
im thinking of starting a petition for people who want to bring back denny, even if it means the story line will go to wack!! if you want them to bring back denny, and are willing to pretend like the death never happened help me on this!!!!!!!
Seriously, who thought the same thing about the funeral? I laughed when I read that. I told my boyfriend if they didn’t at least have a funeral, I wouldn’t watch the show.
What a faux pas to eliminate the only cast member who hunks out McDreamy. Do these stations prefer “ugly”? This guy was a” leave your
husband” for looker and now he’s gone and we’re back to Republican looking men. Boooring! Who ever made the choice to kill him off wasn’t thinking beyond 1 or 2 episodes. Shame…That’ll kill this show on my chart
I am tickled Jeffrey Dean Morgan is going to be in a new show that will most definately be a huge success. However, Greys will never be the same without Denny. He invaded the lives of these interns and made as Izzie said, MADE US ALL LOVE HIM!! Even the Nazi! When poor Denny was in the body bag and she told him she was sorry! Sobbing!! Awesome TV! So knowing the Greys Anatomy powers that be are brilliant, knowing that Jeffrey Dean Morgan and “Shonda Rhimes” will give us yet another show we can’t wait to watch. That is all well and good but none of that will make up for the loss of Izzie’s beloved Denny! So now is the time to watch Izzie grieve, and let Denny rest in peace,
I live in France and last night they played the last episode, where Denny dies ! What a shame ! That man was THE MAN of the show, he really hunks out McDreamy and all these guys with “Republican looks” or metrosexual looks - I love those dimples ! I can’t wait to see him in another show. He’s more than welcome to visit us in France !
I never cry in tv shows or movies but i bawled my eyes out when denny died, and every time he came up in an episode in season 3 (especially the message). I feel like my fiance died! i still cannot get over his death, but I think that if he were to live, it wouldn’t be the same and it wouldn’t be as moving or riveting. Denny and Izzie’s love was so passionate but also so innocent and so completely about each other as people, which may not have been able to happen if Denny had lived to get stronger. His death was the most depressing thing ever EVER ever, but he will be remembered as absolutely perfect because of it
hello my name is Shirley i’am 15years old I come from Belgium and i fiend that you a very good actor are and i love you so much but i anderstand if you don’t very good anderstand what i say oke i go leave you good bye and answer me please xxxx… kisses
Thank you for introducing us to our new favorite character who will never leave our hearts Denny Duquette, and a new favorite actor Mr. Jeffrey Dean Morgan who we can’t wait to see act again. We love them both. Denial is the first stage of grief I bet your writers are glad that Millions of Denny’s faithful fans are ready to move on with the grieving process. Let’s hope that the Academy Awards people are made aware of all this when it comes to the “writer” catagory not only for season one and two, but for the best is yet to come season three!!! Keep up the amazing work knowing you have our full support.
One of the Millions of Greys Anatomy Faithful!
They killed off Denny, yet they kept McSteamy and Cali on as regulars of the show … hmm … I don’t get that one. McSteamy and Cali have absolutely no presence in front of those cameras. Jeffrey Dean had more presence and charisma in his left hand than they have in their enire bodies. I’m really bored when I watch those 2 new regulars now and can’t believe that my heart has been ripped off from the opportunity to, “putter, putter,” when I see the interaction between Denny and Izzie. I’m still making a decision on whether to continue watching this show. It’s good (mainly because of Katherine), but it could have been so much better!
i have writen a comment on another page about jeff morgan and this is my first time doing so,i was shocked when they wrote denny(jeff morgan) of the show i always watched the show just to see that man smile,i have never seen or meet a preson that could make me smile so much just watching them. he rode the role of denny out with the upmost talent, and has touched so may peoples hearts. thats what a true actor can do i hope to see more of jeff in tv and movies as a leading role.and maybe some day meeting him to see that great smile in person.
omg, I absolutely loved Denny and Izzy’s relationship! I wasn’t much of a Grey’s Anatomy fan until Denny entire the scene. He made the show! I was devastated when he died. arg! He was so handsome, maculate and oh did I mention HANDSOME unlike “McDreamy”(that’s getting old). I really was hoping that he would pull through…which would have continued my avid watching. However, the writers made a huge mistake by killing him. Denny was by far the best character on Grey’s Anatomy!
jeffrey dean morgan, what an actor. my best friend bribed me with a fancy dinner to see grey’s anatomy, 1st and 2nd season. now, i buy her a fancy dinner once a week to thank her for making me watch this show. it’s costing me a fortune but it’s money well spent. never have i seen an actor who can convey such emoitons with just his eyes and tears like love (while izzy is trying to convince him that cutting the lvad was the right thing to do), despair, hopelessness and joy while he’s lying in bed. denny makes us, viewers, want to hold him, give him our hearts and, yes, marry him. when all is said and done, when this show becomes a part of triva games, when we choose the ‘entertainment’ category, we only need to say ‘jeffrey dean morgan’ for our partner to say ‘grey’s anatomy.’ jeffrey, hurry up and make more movies because if you make us wait much longer, we will need help for our hearts to beat.
OMG! OMG! OMG! I cried my eyes out for so long after denny died! he was my favorite charater i would do anything for him to come back! then again that would ruin it lol! but no the last new episode of when meredeth was spending time with him while she was dying i cried soooo hard! i recorded it on friday and watch it like everyday!!!! omg now izzie could hav lik stress cardiomyopathy or something! well not really just a lot of depression! and i miss denny!!!!!
I really love jeffrey dean morgan, because i like his smile, and i never never but really never saw a man whit this smile, I think that with that smile it has to have a great sense of humor, and i never saw man who expressed so much whit the eyes, and I must say that I cries when I saw died, i really crie, i am just tryin to say thanks for this great performance and thanks for your beautiful smile and those eyes that say everything without a word, i want to see you again in other show or something.
p.d you have a fan in MÉXICO (I believe that many but I speak by my). and sorry by my bad english but i dont speak a lot and i really want to saw my point of view and i want to say I REALLY LOVE YOU JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN.
thank you.
Just bring Denny back! what he can do with just one smile is worth a million talking scenes
I want to see him on a show where we can tune in every week and enjoy one whole hour of JDM some where some how I could listen to him Talk for Hours whata voice in the complete package.
Why do they always kill off the eye candy???
denny was hot hot hot lol
I am grateful for a show that is remarkable in it’s character interaction and dynamic interplay. Mr. Jeff Morgan thank you! With your portrayal of Denny, you created a man that swept viewers (and Izzy) off their feet. Not an easily done today. Thank you Shonda Rhimes for creating Denny and selecting the perfect actor to pull it off. You make me want to watch this show every week and look forward to what you create in the future!
hey, im from germany AND I LOVE GREYS ANATOMY AND JEFFREY IS MY McDREAMY!!! the episode where denny died havent i seen , because it wasnt in the TV it comes on the 10th april!!! AND I WILL BE CRY!!!(and i never cry by films or series)!!! bye bye… jenny
I LOVE DENNY!!! he is my mcdreamy! i dont want that

jenny
hey, where are they all??? ps. I LOVE DENNY AND HE IS SO SWEET IN GREYS ANATOMY!!! I LOVE HIM SOOO MUCH!!!!
I just watched tonight’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” with “Denny” doing a recap of the show, and I was so thrilled to see him again and to finally catch his name…so I could check him out on the web. I am a huge fan of Jeffery Dean Morgan on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Supernatural”…and if anyone else watches both shows…you probably felt like me when he died on BOTH shows!!! I was so upset…I figured if he died on one show, I could see him on the other…then he dies on BOTH!!!…go figure!!! I’m just glad to finally know his name so I can keep up with where to look for him next.
Saw Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Rachel Ray today, and he was delightful. There must be a way Shonda can bring him back. Even if it’s a “twin brother” or an “angel.” He really was great on Grey’s Anatomy and so many people miss him on that show. He was a great asset to the show and a great actor in general. He was looking something to look forward to each Thursday nite at the end of the work week.
I don’t know if you are going to see this comment, Mr. Morgan, but I think that you are F-I-N-E!! I have not had a chance to witness your other acting momments, however, if they are even close to your performance on Grey’s Anatomy, I have no doubt that you are going to go far!!! Your smile alone lights up the television screen. I wish you the best of luck in all of you endeavors!
We miss you Jeffrey ( I mean DENNY!!!!!) I’ve cried your death for weeks. I’ve seen the final season more than 5 times, hoping that a miracle would happen and the end would change.I wished that would survive.I know It’s insane but your caracter makes me crazy. It’s so unfair! And It’s really hard to see that the show is going on without you.The ‘Twin’ thing was a bright idea. I’m happy to see that Jeffrey is figting for his caracter as hard as his fans. Thank you for all the tears, Jeff. It hurts but, hell, It’s so good! Usually, I don’t cry for romantic or tragic scenes It’s just “DENNY effect”! Good luck Jeffrey!
Since JDM’s departure last year, the show has taken a definite turn for the worse. People who have written in this conference have suggested that bringing Denny back from the dead would make the show into a soap opera. They didn’t have to bring him back from the dead in order for this to happen. With all the characters sleeping with each other, it is officially in soap opera land.
The show is so boring this year. The characters are awfully self-centred. I can’t believe that Meredith hasn’t told Izzie that she saw Denny during her near-death experience; as usual, Meredith has been too busy thinking about herself. Izzie is now in love with George … huh? You mean to tell me that Shonda got us so emotionally invested in the Denny/Izzie storyline and within a year, Izzie now loves George … give me a break! As well, Izzie is no longer likable, especially with the way that she treats Callie. She went from being one of my favorite characters to somebody that I don’t enjoy watching anymore… what a shame!
The only good episodes of this season have revolved around Denny (when the characters talked or thought about him and when JDM was physically on the show). Shonda, you killed Denny off and look what’s happened to your program. It’s gone downhill. You should have listened to everybody when they told you to keep him around. I’ll keep watching until the end of this season, but that’s it. My friends and I are going to focus on “Lost” now, a show that has not crashed like your show has, Shonda.
Those eyes, that smile, the chemistry between Denny and Izzie. Season 2 has just finished this week in UK. Since he died on Sunday night I have watched all the scenes with him in a hundred times! And cried a hundred times more. I didn’t even know JDM’s name before but will be looking out for him now. OMG those smiling eyes
ohhh i love denny!!!but why slept McSexy with Callie!?!she isnt very beautiful!i hate her!
okay, I just have to say: Grey’s anatomy is the best tv-series ever made! and Denny; the most charming caracter I’ve ever seen on TV. I just love him(!!), and cried for hour the day he died.
hmm.. I’m from Norway so I’m a couple of episodes behind the people who’s left their comments here. But I just have to say that I can’t wait to see how this is going to continue, and that I hope to see “Denny” again in another show or maybe a movie (he most certainly has got the talent for it) in the future
+ Du har det nydeligste smilet!

(+ You’ve got the most beautiful smile)
Sigh, sooooo gorgeous a man if ever there was!!
hey denny is in the tv-serie “weeds” but he was dieing!
oh man denn, why die you always?!?!?
ive always been a bit of a softy when it came to tv shows and sad scenes. but i have never seen one as sad as the night i watched Denny pass away. I have watched Greys since the very first night, and as alot of other people did, i fell for Denny. He was such a beautiful character and i have never cried so hard as i did the night he died. i became attached to his character and he was the main reason i watched every week!! what a beautiful man and in my dreams…the perfect husband.
Well i think its really shit that denny died …. well the realationship beetwen danny and izzie was one of the highlights ins this show …. well im from germany today they will show the episode wehre danny will back as a ghost and whrer the both touch … i know i will need a lot of paper for my tears … as denny died i cried sooo hard cuz i can imagine waht izzie felt like …. well when i lvoe a show sooo much i get sooo much emotion as it was me which lost her big love
but im lloking forward to mr . morgans new tv show
he is a really good actor and he does look damn good

hope we will see him in a lot of tv shwos
Greezt to all
chrissy
Omg!!! I cried my eyes out when Denny passed away. You would of thought I was Izzy. I was hoping that Denny would become a regular on the show. I fell in love with him. You are an Awsome Actor and you could brighten up any room. I would love to meet you in person. (don’t tell my husband). lol I could go on and on but I will stop there. Good luck to you and I look forward to watching you in your next roles.
Love Kim
